Would someone who knows how to work a spreadsheet create a draft results post like this? Preferably for readability’s sake, put each position’s breakdown sorted by price into its own [ code ] box. Would make it a lot easier to reference to write reviews and comparisons.
So as a general comment, this auction was the most competitive and competent we’ve ever had. People have always adjusted insufficiently from cheat sheets/projected values from a 12 man league. For some reason, that all changed this year, people were much more spendy and more aggressive. It was more in line with what you’d expect an optimal draft to look like given the differences between our league and a normal 12 man. Prices for the top tier players was significantly (>15%) higher than our typical drafts. I’m really not sure what caused this change, but it made the draft go down in a rather logical way. Contrasted with the auction league this year, which went down kind of weirdly and left some very roller coastery pricing trends up and down the draft, this one pretty much went down like you’d expect a high end/competitive auction draft of this size to go down. I have no idea what changed, but it’s going to be a tough league this year.
Total draft time was about 3 hours 45 minutes, although most of the league had finished and checked out before 3 and a half hours. A little long, but it’s still fun, so I don’t really understand why people are bothered by the time it takes. There was relatively little dead time as far as the noms went, everything went smoothly except for a little technical glitch at the end with a pick reversion, but no one really got screwed on that one except possibly me because I let my nom period elapse when I was trying to figure out if something transpired that needed fixing and it auto-nommed someone I didn’t really want at that point in the draft, and no one outbid me.
We were talking about the controversy about switching to the auction system a few years ago in the league and I think it’s obviously clear to everyone that we made the right call on that one. The auction format is generally superior across the board, but especially for the needs of this league it’s a much better fit.

Self review:
Matt Ryan $30, Terelle Pryor $4
I’m very happy with Matt Ryan for $30. Aside from last year, somewhere in the 2nd tier of QB is usually where I like to go, someone reliable with a high floor but not commanding the premium of top tier QBs. Matt Ryan will be somewhere in the 4-7 range this year in QB points pretty reliably, and I got him relatively cheap. Only $4 more than luck, $3 more than Romo, the same price as RG3, and less than Wilson. I’ll take it. Almost pulled the trigger on Stafford at $29, also a good value there.
Terelle Pryor… I don’t really know why I went that way. I guess with a steady starter, I was willing to gamble on a boom or probably bust QB. In retrospect, I probably should’ve gone EJ Manuel for that purpose for the same price.
David Wilson $51, Knowshon Moreno $10, Bernard Pierce $6
The weakest part of my team clearly. I overpaid for Wilson at 51. I’m high on him this year, especially with Brown out, but $51 is the price you pay for high end second tier RBs and he certainly hasn’t proven that’s what he is. Definitely the potential is there. But at the time - he was the last of the RB2 types. After he was gone, we started getting into Ahmad Bradshaw/Chris Ivory/Eddie Lacy territory. Other people realized there was a clear dropoff after Wilson, and that started off a bidding war that shot his price up. I wish I could’ve got him for $45, then I’d feel really good about it. I’m not sure if I’m happy with that or not.
Moreno… I was desperate to plug in a second RB, so I had to take a chance. I wish I’d have saved a little more money and been able to go after Darryl Richardson or Ahmad Bradshaw instead. I don’t know what’s going on in Denver, but Moreno should be worth starting at least for a few weeks.
Bernard Pierce is one of the guys who has lottery ticket value but also might be a viable flex starter from just the normal carries he gets. For $6 a fine value.
Reggie Wayne $25, Mike Williams $18, Kenbrell Thompkins $12, Ryan Broyles $5, Cordarelle Patterson $4, Marlin Moore $1
My WR corps is pretty strong overall. There’s no clear cut stud, but I think people’s prediction of Wayne’s decline are exaggerated. He’s a very good technician, his offense should be as good or better as last year, and he’s shown no evidence of slowing down, people are just assuming he will. Maybe his production will fall off, but I think 1200/8 is very possible out of him, and for $25 that’s good value.
Mike Williams has a fairly high floor, he’s probably going to put up at least 900/6. That’s a valuable commodity at the WR2 position in a league stretched this thin. Kinda wish I got Josh Gordon here for the same price, but I just didn’t pull the trigger.
Kenbrell Thompkins is the most hyped UDFA ever, but I think he’ll at least somewhat live up to it. I could see him matching Lloyd’s 950 or so yards, which is a great value here if he can. Broyles and Patterson for $5 and $4 are very good lottery tickets. Patterson could have the ball forced into his hands often and perform a Harvin-like role as a rookie and be useful. Broyles is going to be the #2 target in a very prolific passing offense. Marlin Moore I actually didn’t intend to draft - I was trying to figure out if a technical glitch we had would need to be resolved when it was my turn to nominate, and I ran down the timer and auto-nominated Moore, who I didn’t still want at that point in the draft. It’s not bad value at $1, but I could’ve snagged one of my RB lottery tickets with that roster spot instead. I’d have much preferred that.
Rob Gronkowski $26, Rob Housler $1
Tight end is pretty wild this year. Compared to Graham at 45, Gronk at 26 is a steal. Even compared to Witten and Gonzalez in the low 20s, I’ll take it. Gronk should be Gronk for the second half of the season and through the playoffs. There was cheap TE value to be had. I had planned to go with Jordan Cameron, but I felt like Gronk was too good a value at 26 to pass up. He offers too much potential in the playoffs.
Housler was actually my plan to fill in for a couple weeks until Gronk was playing, but it turns out he has a high ankle sprain I didn’t know about, so I guess I’ll have to scrap him for a waiver scrub.

Lot of sacks this year, decent amount of turnovers, probably not so hot on points given up.
Overall, I think I have a fairly well rounded team. A lot of it depends on whether Moreno keeps the starter job or Pierce sees a significant fraction of the backfield split, or Rice gets hurt. My WR situation is steady and deep, I’ll have no problem fielding 3 starters and a flex WR. Matt Ryan is going to be a good, consistent fantasy QB. Gronk will hopefully be full Gronk by week 7 or 8. So the main question will be if Wilson is worth the price I paid, and if either of my other RBs will turn out to be a valuable RB2. The rest of my team is looking good.

Well, I reset the schedules to what they were. I think the side effect of that was that it deleted the draft grades. Damn - those are fun.
The draft grades don’t appear in auction leagues.
