SDMB Big League FF 2010

Justin Bailey confirmed that he’s working on an extensive pre-rank list, so that’s good. MrSquishy said “I’ll try to set up my auto-draft list the best I can if it’s too late to find a replacement.”, but that was last week, and I’m not sure if he actually did any pre-ranking. I sent him a PM and I’ll try to get him to work on it, but if he doesn’t, that leaves us in a tricky position - I wouldn’t want to drop two players because Justin is already putting the work in, and we can’t draft with 19 as a head to head league. I might have to just let there be a wasted team like last year. I guess we could give him extra FAAB money if his draft is a disaster.

Ellis Dee offered to draft on behalf of MrSquishy, but apparently while the comanager of a team can add players, make posts, change rosters, etc. they can’t actually do the draft. So I can’t have Ellis Dee draft for him.

If MrSquishy happens to want to, he can set up a temporary password and send a PM to Ellis Dee with his account info, and Ellis can log in and draft - but I can understand if you don’t want to do that, or you may not even be here before the draft starts.

At this stage it’d be shitty to drop 2 teams because Justin Bailey is pre-ranking 200 players he said, so we’ll risk MrSquishy having pre-ranked earlier, or maybe tossing Ellis Dee his account in time. If he autodrafts a garbage team - well, oh well.

I ended up doing about 125. I think I overpriced enough players that I have to come away with at least a few decent starters.

I’m up to draft for MrSquishy; we played in the SDMB travian guild a couple summers ago so we’re not strangers. (And we were neighbors on the map, even.)

You can boot Mr.Squishy, invite me, then after the draft transfer ownership from me back to him. This all has to happen eariler than 1 hour before the draft, though, and after reading through the entire thread (not super closely) I can’t for the life of me find the draft day or time. I’m guessing it’s tonight around 10pm ET? Any time works for me, but I need to know when to check for the invite.

Cool. Ellis Dee will be drafting for MrSquishy, Justin Bailey pre-ranked enough players to build a viable roster. Unless there’s a surprise no show tonight, we should be just fine.

9.15 p.m. Eastern.

I’m in, reviewing the league settings now to try and form a draft strategy. I think I have a handle on things, but if there’s some basic big league strategy you guys have learned over the years, I’m all ears. (For example: a couple studs with a bunch of scrubs is much better/worse than a having all above-average or average players. Or one uber-stud that you drastically overpay for and the rest doesn’t matter.)

We’ve only had one year of auction, so we’re not too grizzled yet. You can see the costs of the drafted players last year for comparison. Everyone costs more here than they would in a 12 man league, although possibly not as much as you’d expect from the raw numbers difference. A studs and scrubs strategy has to be reeled in a little bit, because you could easily spend $120 of your $200 on 2 studs if you were so inclined.

Last year’s auction was a first for me. But I ended outside the playoffs going with a Stars & Scrubs plan (4 stars).

MrSquishy sent me a PM and he’ll be here for the draft. So if anyone has to take off suddenly and miss the draft, mention it now so I can get Ellis on your team.

Is there some trick to getting the draft app to work? It keeps getting stuck at 90% for me, and refreshing doesn’t help. I missed most of the dynasty league draft due to this.

Different browser? Sorry, I got nothing.

I’m having Ellis Dee draft for Frosted Lightning, our only other no show. If you get back during the draft, post here.

I’m here.

Working on getting back in. Slow it down if you can please.

Frosted, I made some bids on four or five players but couldn’t justify beating what they ended up going for so you still have an empty roster and full budget. Good luck!

Arian Foster, Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson. I am quite happy with my robodraft.

Sorry about having to go on autopick at the end, it looks like the autopicker pretty much gave me the last 2 players I wanted.

It will be fascinating to watch how your team does this year.

Very Quick Draft Review:

Scissor Me Timbers

  1. (36) Matt Forte -$46
  2. (57) Mike Williams -$28
  3. (60) Josh Freeman - $22
  4. (88) Percy Harvin - $22
  5. (107) Baltimore -$5
  6. (114) Steve Smith -$11
  7. (117) Jonathan Stewart - $20
  8. (120) Tony Gonzalez - $10
  9. (141) Mason Crosby - $3
  10. (145) Reggie Bush - $25
  11. (154) Green Bay - $4
  12. (220) Jake Locker - $1
  13. (236) Marc Mariani - $1
  14. (251) Kyle Rudolph - $1
  15. (265) Golden Tate - $1

Best Value: Percy Harvin. I’m not on the Forte bandwagon, but he’s not horrible value, but I like Harvin as a #2 WR for the 22. If he can stay healthy and not drive you crazy, he could be special.

Worst Value: Baltimore/Packers. Two defenses? Both for more than $2? That’s probably why your backup QB is a non-starting rookie.

Outlook: If you like the Bucs’ Freeman and Williams, this team could do alright for itself. Of course I don’t. But the team is built how I like to build mine, get one really good player, a lot of middle cost starters (although you overpaid for a few of them), and then longshots. A lot is riding on Forte, and I wouldn’t like to have to start Bush/Stewart as my #2 RB, but altogether not a bad team.

Court Jesters

  1. Drew Brees - $49
  2. Mark Ingram - $25
  3. Austin Collie - $20
  4. Darren Sproles - $11
  5. Sidney Rice - $17
  6. Mike Sims-Walker - $14
  7. Pierre Garcon - $10
  8. Ryan Mathews - $22
  9. Jordy Nelson - $12
  10. Braylon Edwards - $8
  11. Greg Olsen - $6
  12. New Orleans - $3
  13. Lawrence Tynes - $1
  14. Jamie Harper - $1
  15. Jacob Tamme - $1

Best Value - Ryan Matthews at $22. An OK price on a guy who is, at worst, sharing carries and has the potential to be very, very good. I’ll note his compatriot Mike Tolbert, went for $2 more.

Worst Value - Hooooommmmmeerrrrr. Lots o’ Saints, and not much value to them. I like Brees, but not so much that I’m spending 25% of my budget on him.

Outlook: As the Saints go … I’m not sure I’m on board with the doubling down on guys in the exact same position (Collie/Garcon and Ingram/Sproles), because you’re limiting your own upside. At best, only one of them will actually shine. I’d rather take a shot at two guys who could explode. I like Collie’s value, and Matthews, this isn’t a bad team. But I don’t see it leading the way either. I just don’t think a QB can win it all in this league.

Up By Three

  1. DeSean Jackson - $36
  2. Felix Jones - $43
  3. Jermichael Finley - $26
  4. Vernon Davis - $17
  5. Matt Hasselbeck - $3
  6. Matt Cassel - $5
  7. Ryan Grant - $23
  8. Marshawn Lynch - $13
  9. James Jones - $6
  10. Steve Breaston - $7
  11. Kevin Walter - $5
  12. Danario Alexander - $2
  13. Chicago - $3
  14. Javon Ringer - $3
  15. Stephen Gostkowski - $3

Best Value: Matt Cassel at $5 was not just great value, but a great value at a position you really needed help in. While he won’t set the world on fire, he’s firmly entrenched as the starter and has a modicum of potential. Not too bad at all.

Worst Value: Felix Jones for $43 is too much risk for me, and if you’re going to do it, spend the damn $6 and get DeMarco Murray. I also think you overpaid for 2 TE’s. TE is a deep position and spending so much there hurt you elsewhere.

Overall: I really like most of the single digit cost players you got. I dislike Breaston and his cost, but James Jones, Kevin Walter, and Danario are an OK crew to mix and match for that #2 and #3. Some more depth there wouldn’t hurt though. I like the RB depth too, with Grant (although I’m starting to worry about him), and Lynch being starters. If Felix Jones makes the leap to a top 10 RB and DeSean stays at the top of his game, this team could do some damage. But it’s always going to be going uphill because of questions at QB.
