SDMB D&D Game Part 2

Hello, SDMB!

Some of you may remember, a few months ago, I posted this thread: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=4495140#post4495140 In which I discussed an online game I wanted to run.

Then, shortly thereafter, this thread: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=4655438#post4655438 was posted, in which I specifically requested players.

Well, interest was high, and within a very short time the roster filled up.

Some of y’all got to play, most of y’all didn’t.

And, as life so often does unto us, it did unto several of those who had initially signed up to play.

More than a few have been called away, and the roster is running low.

So I turn, once again, to the SDMB, and ask: Do you want to play a game?

Here’s the main information page, it’s got a LOT of links. Some of the information is less-than-up-to-date, but most of it’s pretty accurate. http://mysite.verizon.net/res6z35z/campaign/

The following are requirements for an invitation:

  1. You must have high-speed internet access. The maps often weigh in at 1MB files, which can take a while to download if you’re on a dial-up system. Even with DSL, the larger maps can take several seconds to completely load. Fortunately, they do not need to be refreshed frequently, but it’s still enough to say no 56k-ers. Sorry folks, nothing personal!

  2. We play every Sunday and Wednesday night, at 5pm CST. Ideally you can make both on a regular basis, but if you can only show up on one day or the other, that’s ok too. I personally arrive around an hour early, to get things set up, and if you’re a little late sometimes that’s not too big a problem, you just miss a turn or three and get a nasty look from the rest of us. Games are scheduled to end at 10pm CST, but on occasion we’ll run a little later. At least once we’ve neared midnight before I shut things down… but, again, you’re welcome to leave early too if you need to.

  3. Hi Opal, 1920’s style Death Rays, and various other beat-up old jokes and the like are acceptable. Jerks are not. Be advised that if you begin to seriously affect gameplay, you can and will be removed.

  4. While a strong role-playing gamer background is sometimes helpful, it’s NOT a requirement. You will need to purchase nothing whatsoever, as I’ve made the game up all by myself. Well, ok, I stole a bunch of ideas from other games. So sue me. What IS needed is the ability to think creatively, and to express yourself well in text.

  5. Each player gets ONE character, and are expected to remain within the limits of that character’s abilities. For example, if you’re a sword-slinger in the medieval world, don’t expect to be able to use that grenade launcher very well. Character types are generally one of a certain selection of standard varieties, seen here: http://mysite.verizon.net/res6z35z/characterclasses/ but in some cases exceptions can be made, allowing for ‘unusual’ characters.

  6. I’m sure I’m forgetting something important.

We are in need of, at most, 4-5 new players.

Ideally, character types would not overlap. We have a fighter, an assassin, a mage, a druid, and a druid-based chef right now, so it would be best if you chose a character type that would complement these other players. Teamwork pays off.

So, wanna play? Let me know by Posting Here, please.

Include the following information:

Day(s) you can play on a regular basis.

The type of character you wish to play. Include a bit of background if you need to, to help get the idea across. For example, “A Cleric” isn’t enough… “A dwarven cleric from a mountain home who found a wounded human and followed him to a human town in search of human women, for whom he has a certain attraction.” is very good. However, it’s been used. He’s one who is no longer with us.

Any other information you might have that would encourage us to choose you over someone else. I don’t wanna make a beauty contest out of it, but space is limited. q;}

This thread shall run for the next couple weeks… I’ll announce a closing time when we’ve got about as many new players as I can handle.

Thanks, and See Ya in the Monkey!

I’d like to say I’m interested, but… CoHeroes right now. Count me in for round three, okay?

I think that a Papal-based food critic would be a good complement to the party.

Grrrrr … high-speed crackin’-frackin’ …

I’d like to play, but I’m living at home right now, and until my dad gets around to giving me the money to set up a home network, we only have one computer to access the internet, and neither him nor my brother would appreciate mt hogging it for five hours two nights our of the week. If we can get it set up soon, maybe I can join, but don’t expect much.

Hi,

I’d like to join. As of right now, I’m available on both days, but I might have to bow out on Wednesdays in a couple months.

I’m looking to play a dwarven fighter/cleric, Boron.

Background:

As a young dwarf, Boron ventured forth with his comrades to fight in the Troll Wars that raged on his country’s borders. After a few years, news of a tragedy reached his ears. He ventured home to find that his land had been taken over by a powerful wizard and his people forced to mine gold for him.

He also found his father dying. The wizard had overworked him and he was on his last breaths. With his dying words he bestowed upon Boron two things, first his family’s battle axe that he had kept hidden from the wizard’s henchmen and the charge to rid the land of the evil wizard,

Joining with his fellows, Boron led an attack on the wizard, managing to free his people but allowing the wizard to escape. Taking only his battleaxe, Boron set forth in search of the wizard. Soon, he befriended a group of dwarves dedicated to the worship of Thoradin Bravesoul, dwarven god of honor and justice. As he protected them from dangers, they taught him the ways of justice and indoctrinated him into their faith.

Now, armed with his axe and his beleifs, he travels the world seeking justice for himself and all others.

Let me know if I’m in.

Ah, I realized what 6) was: An Email-address.

Odinoneeye, that’s an excellent post. Sounds like you have a good character idea all fleshed out there, and that it will fit into my game-world perfectly.

You’re SO in.

Assuming that the address in your post is correct, I’ll send you an email here in a minute. This will have some more information, about how to find the game and such.

Anybody else wanna play? q;}

What edition are you using?

Well, Miller…

Superficially, I’m using the 1st ed AD&D books.

However, I’ve only used those rules as a basis for my own game’s rules set… as well as the rules for about a dozen other games. Stole the parts I liked, dumped the parts I didn’t.

I have tried to eliminate the endless pages of records and charts and tables and such.

Everything comes down to a single D100 roll, in most cases. High roll means ya did it, low roll means ya didn’t.

Check out our LOGs for a better idea of how that works: http://mysite.verizon.net/res6z35z/logs/index.html

The resident assassin taking up religion is a help, but since his wisdom is so low, another party member with the ability to cast cure wound spells would be a huge advantage. The party could use a Granny Weatherwax type character—someone who can cure by sheer force of will.

Someone who can sneak well & do recon type stuff would be handy as well. You know, a thief. Maybe someone could make a Spy sub-class of thief since the party really needs an intel specialist. Maybe an Army Scout: Half ranger/half thief, with horse riding skills and a sixth sense for finding enemies & their tracks; ferreting out movements & supply lines; and sneaking about w/out getting seen.

Or maybe a Long-Toothed Horse Salesman: Half illusionist/half bard, if he can’t sell chain mail to a thief, he’ll club him with his steel guitar and take coin purse. There is a mural of him flying that’s painted on the city wall with the captions “Mel Fard, Super Bard” and “Trade in that Donkey for a Horse, and Make it a Fard of Course!”

The rules we’re playing by are much better since they allow magical/religious characters to be viable players at fairly low levels. Plus, if it fits character, is creative, and is humorous, it seems to be a welcome addition. I almost want to throw my character in front of a moving cart just so that I can make him fit my better understanding of the mechanics of the game.

If I could play two characters, I would totally bring Mel Fard to life.

Odinoneeye, I sent ya an e-mail a couple days ago.

Haven’t heard back, just checkin’ to see if maybe I typed the address wrong.

Lemme know.
