If there’s a way we can draw/randomize the draft order in advance, then, let’s do it.
I’ll be glad to preset the draft order if everyone wants.
I’m thinking about the best way to do it. My first instinct is to have everyone send me an email with a number between 1 and 100. I’ll then randomly draw a number out of a hat (actually, probably a dice roll or something since i’m not writing 100 little pieces of paper) as well as whether to go up or down. From that, the order is determined going away from the number picked in that order. The upside here is that I get to compile an email list of players and everyone is forced to be active leading into the draft.
The negative is that it counts on all the players to actually check their emails over the weekend.
Alternatively, I could just assign numbers randomly to everyone on my own and you all will just have to trust me.
Or hell, maybe I can find a nifty online tool to do it all for me.
Any opinions?
I found a random sequencer at random.org that will generate a sequence based on the settings you give it. Since each team has a number based on when they joined the league, you could set the draft order that way.
Ooh, let’s make it complicated!
We could have brianjedi generate a random number assignment for each team based on the Team & Manager List, and send that to Omni. I’ll generate a random order of the numbers 1-15, and send those to Omni. Omni will then combine the two random orders together into a verifiable random order so that we can ensure there was no funny business.
Isn’t it great when a bunch of geeks get together! things get interesting!
Geekiness + baseball statistics = special times.
Howzabout we plan to fire up the order on Monday or Tuesday, which will give the weekend for any stragglers to round us out to a nice 16 teams?
I was gonna do it today, but you’re right, maybe it would be good to allow the late arrivals the weekend to sign up. Though at this point, we might be maxed out. And anyone who’d been procrastinating this long might not have the stones to play out a entire season anyways.
So that settles it…?
True. Let’s fire it up. The plan (as I see it):
-
I will send a list of numbers 1-15 in a randomized order to Omniscient.
-
brianjedi will randomize a list of the teams to Omniscient, making sure to include team names.
-
Omniscient will combine these two lists to create a verified tamper-proof randomized list of the draft order so that we can all salivate and obsess over the merits between drafting #11 or #14.
Woo! brianjedi, soon as I get your email we’re set! Though I’m amused that Munch volunteered you. Thats the kind of proactive stuf I like.
Omni, you have email.
Yay for obsessing! At least I’ll have a better idea of who I can target as my draft picks.
Got them both, but we’ve now got a 16th players, so I need a revised Munch list.

We’re set to pop here, honey.

Noooo, the league is full now? I was even one of the first people to reply. sniff
Omni? Shall we put him through the initiation ritual?
Sure, what the hell. Lemme get my cloak and Garden Weasel.
I upped the Max teams to 18.
micahjn, you’re welcome to join, but given the fact that you ignored the thread for the better part of 2 months, I have to ask that you honestly assess whether or not you’re going to be able to committ to actively participating in managing you team throughout the long baseball season. Since you’ve stated past experience with other fantasy sports, I’m optomistic that you’re all good. But I just wanted to ask that you give it some honest consideration.
Just for the sake of fairness, I think he and anyone else who joins the league should be at the end of the draft order. Nothing personal, micahjn, but I feel like those of us that signed up earlier deserve a better spot than someone who slides in less than a week before the draft.
I’m fairly indifferent to this. Though if we want to take a quick mini-vote between whoever checks-in on the thread this afternoon, thats cool with me. I can see putting them at the end, but since there’s been no draft order set so far, it’s not really changing anything for anyone either.
My main concern is that the late-comers are going to be more apt to lose interest or have short-attention spans. If that’s true, then it’d suck if they have top 5 draft positions. If they are active player throughout the season, I won’t feel that anything unfair took place. My $0.02 anyways.
Also, if we do go with the late-comers at the end, do we apply the rule to everyone after the first 14? 15? 16?
I’ll leave it up for discussion for a while. If micahjn doesn’t sign-up soon it’ll be moot anyways.
Well, since we we planning for 16, I say anyone after that.
Really, it doesn’t matter that much to me. I just feel like that since the majority of the league has been signed up for weeks, giving a latecomer a chance at a high draft spot isn’t fair.
And like you said: if he doesn’t sign up soon it won’t matter.
I don’t think bumping him down to the bottom would be in order. Up until yesterday afternoon, we were just going to wait until 30 minutes before the draft for Yahoo to randomize the order for us anyway.
But I will echo Omni’s request that any newcomers reflect on the commitment involved. We’ve all been excited about this for going on 2 months now, and idle teams can really take away from the overall enjoyment of the league. Bigger IS better, but I’d rather be in a 14-team league where everyone’s active than in an 18-team league where 16 teams are active.
Not to be too pedantic, I think it’s a bit misleadng to say we were “planning” on 16. Early on we discussed having 2 leagues with a conditional number of players. When we paired it down to one league, we compared it to last years 18 team league without forming a concensus. As commish I never declared this to be a 16 team league and was always open to adding as many as wanted to join up to 18. I set the initial limit at 16 fairly arbitrairily, manly just to allow anyone to strongly protest a 18 vs 16 team league if we got to that point.
In the end it’s a fairly minor point, but I just wanted to state as commish that the original 16 team limit on the settings wasn’t an indication of an implicit player cap.
We had 14 long-standing initial signups, over the last week and a half or so we welcomed additional players.
I feel like treating #17 differently than #15 is a little unfair. There’s a reasonable arguement to be made for putting those guys at the end, but I think the cut off would have to be at 14. And since it was never stated to those guys before now, it would be too prejudicial.
Long story short, I think I’m talking myself into reseeding everyone regardless of sign-up date.
