SDMB Fantasy Basketball League 2010 - Any Interest?

I’m against it, but I’ll abide by the majority opinion.

SenorBeef, like Omni said, our format is very much unlike fantasy football in that it’s just one long grind of stat accretion rather than a series of individual battles, and that makes the amount of management required a very different animal. There’s no bye weeks, and with 82 games, almost everybody misses a few, so not checking or adjusting your team for a little while is extremely easy to overcome. There have been a few teams over the years who got such a great combination of good draft choices and lucky breaks that they almost never had to replenish their roster, and they could set it and forget it for basically the year if they wanted to. Also, certain teams seem to go static after a few months because the owners stop paying attention, same as most leagues. Of course, if things don’t go perfectly for you and you aren’t doing anything about it, you’re fucked in any event.

On the other hand, I end every season with a roster that’s 90% different from my opening night roster, which is, let’s say 2/3 by virtue of strategy and 1/3 by virtue of I’m an idiot, and I have a lot of fun adding and dropping and getting production from weird guys.

The thing that’s most fun about fantasy basketball, I think, is that there are so many useful players and so many ways they can be useful that you can sort of do whatever you want, especially if you want to be overbearing and obsessive about it. If you decide your steals and assists outlooks are grim, well, there’s like 120 guards in the league who get significant playing time, so you’ve got options, and nobody’s stopping you from trading all your forwards and centers for point guards.

That’s all for a roto league, where you’re trying to rank as high as possible in each category for the entire season. In head-to-head, like Omni said, the approach is completely different and you have to know who is playing when, you can totally punt on certain stats if you want, you get scored for weekly victories and not for an entire season’s performance, and so on. I personally hate that format and barely tolerate it in football leagues only because football itself is a weekly thing.

And this encapsulates my argument against Roto leagues. Roto leagues can devolve into a grind-fest and the attrition saps the joy out of them for all but the top few teams. Weekly head-to-head leagues ought to maintain a higher level of involvement with less overhead and give those middle of the pack teams a steady reason to get excited and create opportunities for the highs and lows of wins and losses. They also allow a savvy manager to counteract a team with a great draft and a couple lucky sleeper picks preventing the runaways that have plagued this league just about every season.

Plagued by runaways? That just isn’t true. I’ve won the league 3 out of the last 4 years, by one point, four points, and seven points, and in none of those years was I winning with two months to play. And last year you were winning until the break, weren’t you?

I don’t have the numbers, but every year the team that wins the league is in the top one or two of every single category. That’s just messed up. There have been years where 2 teams were tied near the top with each sharing 1st and 2nd in each category, I think you and I were within a few points but the 3rd place team was way back. I’m not sure if we can find the numbers to back that up but that’s my recollection.

Last year:

1. Rim Jobz 9 9 6 8 9 9 7 6 63
2. Madhouse on Madison 8 1 4 9 8 8 9 8 55
3. Kid_A 6 2 7 7 7 6 8 9 52
4. chitwood 4 4 2 5 5 7 6 7 40
5. T'ed Up 5 5 9 6 6 2 4 2 39
6. Orlando Tragic 7 6 8 4 3 1 2 5 36
7. Phoenix Purple Power 2 3 5 3 4 5 5 3 30
8. Strange Sasquatch 3 7 3 1 1 3 1 4 23
9. New Ben = No Sleep 1 8 1 2 2 4 3 1 22

You and I were well ahead of the pack until the end when I fell off trying to make up ground. You won by a wide margin and dominated almost every category while I was in the top 2 of almost all the categories except shooting percentages.

2008:

1. chitwood 9 6 8 9 6 9 7 7 61
2. Strange Sasquatch 10 3 7 7 10 7 8 8 60
3. Number 18 Is Coming 3.5 7.5 9 10 7 6 6 9 58
4. Kid_A 6.5 5 4 6 4 10 9 10 54.5
5. Izzzzzzzziah Thomas 5 4 6 8 9 5 5 4 46
6. Dribblerz 3.5 9 3 5 5 8 10 1 44.5
7. Madhouse on Madison 8 2 5 3 8 4 4 5 39
8. Phoenix Purple Power 2 10 10 4 1 2 2 2 33
9. The Round Mounds 6.5 1 2 2 2 3 3 3 22.5
10. Orlando Tragic 1 7.5 1 1 3 1 1 6 21.5

2008 was quite a bit more competitive but the across the board domination of the top teams is still apparent.

2007:

1. chitwood 7 7 9 7 5 8 7 4 54
2. SexualHarasmentPanda 5 6 2 4 8 7 9 9 50
3. NotDeadLast (Omni) 9 2 6 8 7 3 5 7 47
3. Kid_A 1.5 4.5 4 6 9 6 8 8 47
5. Green Domination 8 1 1 5 6 9 2 5 37
6. The Round Mounds 4 3 7 9 2 5 4 2 36
7. Dallas Mavwrecks 6 9 3 3 4 2 3 3 33
8. Isotopes 1.5 8 8 2 1 1 1 6 28.5
9. Frosted_Lightning 3 4.5 5 1 3 4 6 1 27.5

Another fairly competitive season at the top, this was the most parity we saw.

2006:

1. Wallace 3 4 8 6 8 7 8 8 52
2. The Round Mounds 1 7 5 8 7 8 6 3 45
3. Kansas City Knights 4 3 6 7 4 6 3.5 4.5 38
4. Kid_A 8 1 4 4 6 5 3.5 6 37.5
5. Hail to Danny Ainge 5 2 3 5 5 3 7 7 37
6. White Ugly & Hairy 7 8 1 3 3 2 5 4.5 33.5
7. Isotopes 6 5 7 2 2 4 1.5 2 29.5
8. Puppies Taste Good 2 6 2 1 1 1 1.5 1 15.5

This year with fewer teams was another runaway. The winner won by a wide margin even though he was middling in the rate stats.

2005:

1. Baltimore Bullets 4.5 7 6 8 8 7 8 48.5
2. Nene's Cross 7 5 4 7 7 6 6 42
3. HappyFamily 3 6 8 6 4 8 1 36
4. Serbian All-Stars 1.5 8 1 5 5 5 5 30.5
5. UntouchaBulls. 6 3 5 4 3 3 3 27
6. Beneath the Rim 1.5 4 3 3 6 2 4 23.5
7. RoundMounds (Wilson) 4.5 1 7 2 2 4 2 22.5
8. MaddMaxx 8 2 2 1 1 1 7 22

Another butt whipping.

4. Bricklayers (Wilson) 5 6 4 6 5 5 5 2 38
5. the heir up here 4 8 5 4 1 3 2 1 28
6. duffer 3 3 1 3 4 4 4 5 27
7. ballers 2 7 8 1 2 1 1 3 25
8. Lamb meet slaughter 1 2 2 2 3 2 3 6 21

The inaugural season was a fairly competitive one at the top but the winner still claimed the top 2 spots in 6 of 8 categories.

Ah, OK, I see what you mean. I think that’s the big downside of such a small league. Top 3 in a cat when there’s only 8-9 teams actually isn’t that impressive, you know? But it’s still top 3. And if one or two teams drop off the face of the earth (which always happens; look at all the 1s and 2s at the bottom), you do get a lot of the reverse at the top. I certainly always feel like it’s a contest, though, even though in retrospect you’re right about the extent to which the top few teams are always so dominant.

Do you think a switch to head to head would address that, though, provided that the same level of interest and league size remained?

I’ll vote for roto, but I’m willing to play head to head if that is the consensus.

I suspect head to head would lessen the likelihood for the bottom teams giving up since they aren’t likely to fall behind so irrecoverably. Also the instant gratification of weekly wins is more rewarding than a constant daily grind. Roto is inherently tough on casual fans.

Also I think that head to head would soften the impact of an owner having Lebron since in any given week you can beat a team with tougher matchups or an injury. In Roto the sample size really rewards teams drafting at the top.

While it’s true that it’s easier to make up ground in H2H, I haven’t found it to be the case that people are less likely to give up. In quasi-public leagues people just see that they’re in last place at the break and then, zap, gone.

Regardless, in a league where you expect attrition, I can’t see how H2H is superior to roto. When someone leaves in roto and their team starts to slide, everyone benefits. But in H2H it becomes unbalanced because all the teams the deserter plays in the last month get a free ride. I hate missing the playoffs because the team below me in the standings plays the zombie owner in the last week and leapfrogs me with a 9-1 score.

I’d be cautiously willing to do head to head as long as there were no playoffs, it was just season performance to determine the winner (not sure which format is usually used in basketball). In general though I remain marginally in favor of roto. There’s something to be said for keeping more teams involved, but there’s also something to be said for the best team actually winning. I have nothing wrong with a compromise there, but if a team was good enough to dominate every category over 82 games, I wouldn’t want to see them lose the championship because a certain number of weeks were artificially made more important than others.

Draft tonight folks. 2 Hours from now, 6:15 PT, 9:15 ET.

Must have been a quick draft. I preranked though, and I’m fine with my team.

Glad you missed it, I think that saved me from being scooped on a handful of picks. Notably D-Wade, Jennings and Arenas.

Yup, draft took something like 42 minutes top to bottom. 6 of the 8 people there, 14 rounds, pretty rapid fire for the most part. Still a bunch of good players on the wire because of how shallow the league is. Pretty happy with my team overall, very glad I actually made the draft this year; we’ll see how it goes.

Quick comments by round.

Round 1:
Durant #1 overall is a no-brainer and the best pick of the round. Very surprised I got Wade at #7, really happy about that result assuming his injury is trivial and he doesn’t miss time to start the season, which I think it is. I love Steph Curry, he helped my team a ton last year, but I don’t think I’d be caught dead taking him ahead of some of the guys left on the board, who knows if he can repeat last season’s numbers with Nellie gone and teams prepping for him.

Round 2:
I like the Amare pick, he and D’antoni ought to score a ton in NYC. But I was struggling between taking him and Carmelo there. I think I made the right choice but it was a touch call. All in all, I agree with the way this round shook out with the exception of Carmelo not being in it. Lot of faith being put in Lee though considering he changed teams. Had him last year too.

Round 3:
Obviously the Melo pick is the star here in my book. I was starting to get excited when he lasted 10 picks beyond Amare, but I knew deep down it was crazy to hope he’d fall to me in the 3rd. Nash and Kidd are too old to trust, but of the two I like Nash about 30 times as much. Billups is a Yuck pick too. Lots of desperation PG picks in this round. I really dislike Bosh there especially since I’m counting on Wade to be a star for me, but his value is great. I might regret passing on Roy though if Bosh becomes an afterthought in Miami.

Round 4:
I was debating between Jefferson and Evans with my pick in this round. GG solved that riddle for me and once he did I was actually relieved since I was subconsciously leaning towards Evans. Between him and Wade I’ll be getting a ton of points form my PG/SG, assists might be an issue though. Very excited about that pick though. All in all a weird round, it’s tough to get excited about any of the guys drafted after Evans. With Ellis, Curry and Lee all going this early you’d think Golden State was gonna be in the title game. I think you’ll all be disappointed.

Round 5:
Love the Westbrook pick a ton. I thought for sure I’d be able to grab him and bolster that assist hole on my team but it wasn’t to be. Apparently others have been paying attention to the Zombie Sonics. Rose was next in my queue after Westbrook. I like these PGs better than those taken in the 3rd round. Bargnani is interesting as he’s about the only guy playing in Toronto, might be a great fantasy pick. I took Gallinari because I saw a real dearth at SF left and I was without one, I had him on my team last year and was pretty damn pleased with his numbers. There’s a chance he could be a flop though, especially if he gets traded for Melo. I’ll be comparing him to Rudy Gay all season.

Round 6:
Got Noah in this round as my only Bull. Had him and Rose both last season, so the continuity on him is nice, plus his stats should improve greatly this year with Boozer helping out. That’s 3 PF/Cs in the first 6 rounds for me. I like the mix, we’ll see if I suffer in the guard-centric cats. I was crushed when Wall came off the board, I think he’s going to be a fantasy beast this season ala Evans and Jennings. I was playing the waiting game on him and lost.

Round 7:
I didn’t get Wall, but I got Jennings. Of the two I think Jennings is the better pick since he’s proven it already, but I had targeted him, Evans and Wall as my PG group for the season. 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. The best pick of the round, if he stays healthy, is Blake Griffin. Apparently he’s looked dominant in preseason action be is once again hurt already. Time will tell, but I love the gamble. There’s a good chance he’s better than Danny Granger. I actually had forgotten about him and didn’t have him queued, I can’t say how early I’d have pulled the trigger if I’d remembered.

Round 8:
Drafted Jamison here and I think he’s a steal. The guy’s not a stud but the Cavs are going to have to ride the guy this season without BronBron. In fantasy the best guy on a crappy team tends to be really valuable. I like the pick for that reason alone. I was very tempted by KG at that pick and while you don’t know what you’ll get out of him he’s a possibly great pick this late. Aldridge is a guy to keep an eye on if he’s healthy too. Lots of big guys in this round, everyone felt the same needs I think.

Round 9:
Devin Harris is a nice pick, he fits my best guy on a crappy team argument, and a productive PG this late is very valuable. I’m utterly shocked that I get Arenas this late. Agent Zero is a fucking idiot but he’s still talented and ought to put up serious numbers. He’s certainly well rested too! Randolph was the heartbreaker here. I was terrified that Arenas would get taken from under me but I would have been really pleased with Randolph as a consolation prize. Had I not been so deep at PF/C I’d have gone with Randolph over him but I still had hopes he’d last a few more picks for me. All in all, this is a heck of a round.

Round 10:
Eric Gordon was right after Randolph in my queue and was another hope to scavenge some assists for my team. Strange the way that worked out. Great pick. I loathe Cousins and think he’ll be a bust but there’s a very good chance I’m wrong here and I figure since my queue was emptied I might as well take a shot with the high upside rookie. He might even have a higher ceiling than Wall in fantasy. The rest of the round is pretty much garbage, so I felt good about the pick even if I’ll hate rooting for him.

Round 11:
Drafted former Bull Salmons here. Meh. I like the SG/SF eligibility a bunch and that’s why I gave it a shot, not sure how I feel about him after signing a fat contract but he had some nice games for me last season. He’s a bench player, and he’ll be able to fill in for a lot of different spots. Rashard Lewis was the guy I wanted and it stung when he was plucked before my pick. Great upside this late, especially if Vince gets traded midseason. I like Parker too, and in retrospect I might regret favoring scoring and positional flexibility over assists here.

Round 12:
Andre Miller is nothing special at all but he’ll finally provide me with some assists. He’s ancient but he ought to see more playing time this season than last and could have a nice little year. Hopefully I don’t need him for much beyond spot starts. Lots of crappy players in this round, Crawford might be the best for fantasy purposes.

Round 13:
Stuck myself with Beasley here. I justify the pick with my good player on a crappy team logic. Beasley couldn’t handle Miami and Riley, in Minny he won’t have anyone to constrain him. This will be terrible for him as a person and a player, but might be great for fantasy. Then again, maybe getting away from South Beach will be a bonus. His minutes will surely go way up though! Another carry over from last seasons team for me. A lot of guys who could have excellent fantasy seasons taken in this round though. VC, Maggette, Lopez, Calderon, Biedrins, all might actually have solid value.

Round 14:
Greg Oden was a panic pick. I had nothing in my queue and couldn’t find anything that worked for me. Time was running out and I reached. I vague recalled someone saying that Oden had looked good on defense in exhibitions and that I might get lucky. I see now he’s apparently out until November already. Who knows, maybe I’ll hang onto him and see what happens, but more likely he’ll be Waiver bait. The rest of the round kinda smells the same, I don’t know anything about this Thronton kid at all, but the Yahoo rankings kinda liked him.

Time for my draft post-mortem

The Kaman Centipede

  1. (2) LeBron James - Pretty obvious at the second pick. between a lack of centers on the team and Mike Miller out, I am pretty sure James will fill up all categories way more than Kevin Durant.

  2. (15) Dwight Howard - I was really hopeful Pau Gasol would fall to this spot, but that was before Dwight Howard did. I get a center that sets me up nicely in multiple categories that is usually taken much higher than 15th. This also begins my streak of deciding that free throw percentage is useless. I am guaranteed to take last in that metric.

  3. (18) Josh Smith - A little worried here. This pick (combined with my centers) locks me into a top spot in blocks. If I get the offensive version of Josh Smith from last year where he forgoes 3 pointers and sticks to attacking the basket, I am happy. If he reverts to idiotic shooting, his value plummets.

  4. (31) Paul Pierce - As long as he doesn’t start a steep age-related decline, I thin I’ll be happy here. Considered Ginobili, but I think Pierce is a slightly safer injury risk.

  5. (34) Russell Westbrook - The first of two picks that will make or break my team. I think he’s primed to take the leap. I think his FG% improves with age and his counting stats increase with the focus fully on Durant. But, if I’m wrong, I’ll look like an idiot for passing on Derrick Rose.

  6. (47) Stephen Jackson - Good scorer, bad team. Lots of steals, lots of playing time. A little bit of a panic pick as I was aiming for John Wall.

  7. (50) Blake Griffin - My 2nd make or break pick. If he stays healthy, he’s way more valuable than a 7th rounder and will probably lift me a spot or two in the rankings. But, he’s a Clipper and that’s never a good thing.

  8. (63) Raymond Felton - Needed a point guard, he plays in Dantonio’s system so I have hopes he’ll pile up the stats. But this feels like a weak spot.

  9. (66) Andrew Bogut - Without the elbow injury, he would have gone much higher so getting him here (even with the risk of a slow start) gives me two elite centers.

  10. (79) Luis Scola - Yao will sit a lot. Scola was one of the best players at the World Championships, and I think a full year of Kevin Martin will help open up the middle a lot for him. I’m so high on Scola, I considered jumping on him 15 picks earlier.

  11. (82) Anthony Morrow - I really needed 3 pointers, dude can shoot lights out, and the Nets will hopefully feed him the ball a lot.

  12. (95) Jameer Nelson - If he stays healthy, this feels like a good sleeper. My guess is he gets dinged a lot and I cut him by February.

  13. (98) JaVale McGee - A young headcase who could either give me 8th round value in every category other than FT%, or he’ll flame out and make me wish I had picked Al Harrington.

  14. (111) Louis Williams - Felt like I needed a guard who could score and shoot fairly well. To be honest, there are probably 50 guys I could have taken here as basically a crap shoot. Who knows how many people I’ll rotate through this spot.
