SDMB Fantasy Basketball League 2010 - Any Interest?

We’ve had a fantasy hoops league here for the last few years and with the season just 11 days away I am a little surprised that no one has brought it up. I don’t recall who was in the league last season and who commished it, but hopefully those of you who played before will pop in and comment. Ideally whoever commished last year can send out invites via Yahoo to get things up and running.

I commished. I had no idea. I’ll send the things out now.

OK. League ID is 83935. Password birdman. All are welcome.

Link, which might not work until you’re in, is http://basketball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/nba/83935

Draft right now is set for Monday night before the opener. There are some other spots available but I tried for the best middle ground I could get.

Joined. Thx.

I rejoined. I will probably be a bit late for the draft, but I will prerank

I just want to say that this league is set up so that a streamer can easily dominate the whole thing.

No it isn’t.

Yeah it is. Six out of eight categories are counting stats and there are unlimited daily roster moves. You want me to show you?

I’m tempted to just say yes, but that would be kind of a dick move.

(it’s roto)

Am I misunderstanding the way it’s scored? Even in a roto league, if lineups are changed daily, you’re going to be at a considerable advantage streaming out inactive roster slots, right?

Just as in a roto baseball league, there are game caps. 82 per roster spot. So you can stream all you like up to and no further than one full season out of each lineup position.

I’ve never seen any owner streaming in this league. With my work schedule, I have to set lineups 2 or 3 times a week. I find streaming to be boring.

Got it. I withdraw my comment. Strangely, I’ve never had a cap in any of my roto leagues before.

I’m in. I was hoping we would get his thing up and running again this year!

In. Probably not at the draft, but I’ll pre-rank and outfox myself.

Now that we’ve got a decent quorum, at least, I’ll open the floor to discussion. There are still draft slots earlier, if we want. I didn’t take that Sunday night but it is still a (limited) option. If Mullinator or anybody else would prefer a different draft time we can talk about that.

This is also probably the time for Omni to ask if we can go to head-to-head this year, and for me to say I’m against it but will abide by the majority opinion. We can also talk other scoring options.

To make it official: Head-to-head?

How much management does fantasy basketball require? I barely know shit about basketball, but I’m curious to see how well I could do playing projections and consensuses. But I have no idea how fantasy sports outside of football work. Is there a lot of daily roster management?

Depends on the format. In a pure Roto league like we’ve played the last few seasons there’s not a lot of daily roster issues, but there can be if you want to mirco manage. It’s essentially identical to baseball. You can set lineups as many days in advance as you want, generally you want to get as close to 82 games at every position as you can, which means you want your starters playing as often as possible but due to injury you occasionally will want to sub players in and out on a daily basis to increase the total number of games logged on your starters off days. Matchups are also a occasional consideration too. Basketball probably tolerates absentee owners a little better than baseball since you don’t have pitching rosters to rotate.

In a head-to-head league you treat it like the NFL where you set your league once a week and assemble the best lineup based on matchups and talent. The trick being that teams don’t always play the same number of games in a given week so playing players with an extra game or two in a week might be advantageous. Also, instead of a raw point total each week it’s the manager who wins the most roto categories who wins the week. That last point might be something that can be adjusted in the settings, I’m not really sure, these guys won’t ever let me play head-to-head!

I would prefer roto, sorry Omniscient.

Also, SenorBeef, I would suggest you give it a try. You can really put as much or as little time into it as you want and still have fun.
