Am I on the clock? I can hold off until @SenorBeef has a chance to fix the IR and enter the last keepers if that helps. No compelling offers to trade up so I know who I’m taking.
@SenorBeef or @Jules_Andre have to enter the draft results manually anyway, so I wouldn’t think making picks on the board should affect anything they have to do with IR and keepers.
Likely true, but it could present the temptation to accidentally “begin” the draft in the system. For the first handful of picks seeing the list of available players isn’t important but if we get too far ahead it might be annoying. Also, I suppose there’s a minor risk that one of the posted cut lists is wrong and includes a player not on the team or something similarly wonky. Getting it entered and reviewed provides a clean way to validate everything before we start.
I’m good either way but figured I’d let the commish weigh in before opening the flood gates.
The IR slots is now set to 3. You can go ahead and start the draft. I’ll enter the kept players / determine draft slots later tonight, but it shouldn’t affect the first few picks.
Aaaaaaaand we’re off.
Pick 1.01 - Marvin Harison Jr.
Woot. @Spiritus_Mundi is on the clock. Will Send a DM, but I think that’s redundant to the @user mention feature these days…
Omniscient is now marked safe from the wrath of Marvin Harrison Sr.
Suggestion for the future. Let’s start the draft at the same time as the 53-man roster deadline. That would eliminate the weirdness of a person being kept in our league only to be off an NFL team 24 hours later.
I’d support that.
I think when we originally came up with our schedule, the 53 man cut down wasn’t until after the 4th week of preseason, so we’d lose over a week of draft. But since they reworked the preseason schedule we’d only lose a day or two looks like. So I’m open to changing that for next year.
Alright, the keepers are entered and everything should be correct and current. Please check your rosters and make sure you have the right players - I’m in a bit of a hurry and I didn’t double check everything.
After the players were entered, I entered the following trades:
Omni receives Jules 1st (1.11)
Peteys receives Jules 2nd (2.11)
Omni receives Retro’s 2nd (2.5)
Jules receives Omni’s 2nd to last 2024 pick (5.1)
Now I need help to sort this out. This left Peteys and Omni with 26 picks (keepers and draft slots) and Jules and Retro with 24 picks. Everyone has to have a total of exactly 25 keepers/picks to be able to enter the draft.
In effect, Omni and Petey have one draft slot that they cannot use, because their teams are already at 25 picks before they get to their last draft slot.
On the other hand, Jules and Retro are at 24 slots and cannot finish the draft.
This is the purpose of the “and his last pick” rule that most people wanted to get rid of. It balanced out these situations. I can’t remember what the conclusion was for how we’d handle this situation during the discussion last year.
As a temporary solution, just so I can enter the draft, I gave Omni’s last pick to retro (6.1) and Petey’s last pick to Jules (6.4), but I don’t think that’s how people who proposed changing the trade rules intended it to work out. Can someone run me through how we were supposed to sort out these trades and who gets what picks? Thanks.
You can use the draft results to see the status of the draft and if you use the players interface you can see the available players to draft, including rookies and veterans.
Something about your math doesn’t work.
I kept 18 players which should leave me with 7 draft picks.
I added Jules 1.11 and he gets my 6.1.
I added Retros 2.5 and he gets my 7.1.
This leaves me still with 7 picks added to my 18 keepers for 25 total players. Similar math should hold up for Jules and Retro on the other side (it’s the whole point of requiring balanced trades.).
In your list you overlooked the part of my Retro trade where he got my last pick which potentially explains half of the issue, but the pick going to Jules should be 6.1 not 5.1.
Edit: I just looked at the Jules-Peteys trade from last year and that looks like it was an invalid trade. Peteys will have had to also have received Jules last natural pick in this year’s draft to keep it balanced.
I know this comes up every year and people argue that future trades shouldn’t need to be balanced, but that requires both teams to account for that in their drops and for the commish to set it all up pre-draft to verify the counts on cut day.
@Spiritus_Mundi has been up for about 17 hours. Obviously this is not the quick start I hoped to get off to, but I e-mailed him just now and we’ll give him some more time because a pick as high as the #2 overall is too pivotal to skip until we really need to.
If you might be interested in someone still available in the next few picks, I’d suggest putting out feelers for trade talks now, so you can gauge if there’s interest and start negotiating.
The number 2 pick is pretty obvious. Let’s just give him the obvious number 2 pick and move on.
I agree. Give him Ladainian Tomlinson and be done with it.
(In all honesty, I can see 2 different choices, so maybe not).
The obvious #2 being Nabers? We’ve never forced a pick on anyone before, but I suppose if there’s an obvious pick and it’s a team need, someone would probably rather get the consensus #2 prospect than being skipped and having to draft a few slots down. We’ll give it a few hours.
The normal procedure for this would simply be to allow people to pick ahead of him and allow him to come back at any time and make his pick, but if he falls from #2 to #5 or #6 he might be pretty upset about it and I try to get the most happy outcome overall, so if people are okay with just making a clear consensus #2 pick instead of having him drop down indefinitely, we can do that.
We have plenty of time to wait. I say give it thru the afternoon before we make any decisions.
Sorry folks - had an unexpected surgery. Yes, Nabers at 1.02
Yeah I was about to say I’m not worried about time. Worse comes to worst we can schedule a live draft time at like 9:00 p.m. Eastern on the Wednesday before kickoff where we’re just all at the computer with the thread open and blast through any remaining picks.
That said, sorry to hear about unexpected surgery and hope all is well with you.
No problem, hope you’re doing alright.
