SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year Eight

This is shaping up to be something. Looks like we’re both going to put up big scores. Yahoo projects me to have a bigger score than I will, though, because they’re projecting Green Bay to keep scoring, but whenever they’re up like this after the first half they just stop playing offense. So great first half, Rodgers/Nelson, and that’s all you’re going to do.

But no one on Varlos’ team is off to a start like that, so even with Green Bay putting the brakes on it I may be alright. I’m probably at least a 2:1 favorite at this point.

Annoyingly, all the choices I might’ve replaced Lamar Miller with other than Gabriel are doing well. Allen Robinson finally has a good game (13.3), Cameron Meredith has 16.3, Chris Thompson 15, even Travis Benjamin is off to a good start. Of all those i was actually very closely split between Gabriel and Meredith. Ah well.

Yeah, pretty much as predicted. Rodgers/Nelson combined for 62 points in the first half and 8 points in the second half. Ajayi had his first big week in a while, which is nice. I feel like Ty Montgomery was a mandatory start after blowing up last week, so even though it didn’t work out I’m at peace with it. But if I manage to lose today I’m gonna beat myself up over Gabriel over Meredith.

I have a 30 point lead over Varlos with Demaryius Thomas and Cameron Brate still to play. He’s got Crabtree, Sanders, and the Ravens. I’ll take my side of this, but I’m nervous.

Congratulations, SenorBeef! Take a load off this summer.

Congrats, Beef.

Last Year.

Total Points Scored: 19,085.79 (-338.56 from last year)
Average Points/Team: 1.590.48 (-28.22)
Average Team/Week: 113.61 (-2.01)

Northeast Division (14-18): 1571.52 –> 112.28/ppg (-5.55 from last year)
Midwest Division (15-17): 1610.10 –> 115.01/ppg (-0.62)
Sunbelt Division (19-13): 1588.33 –> 113.45/ppg (+0.01)

Scoring was way down this year. In our league that mostly wound up manifesting as the Northeast falling back after last year’s breakout while the other two divisions held firm or slipped a little, but overall that’s an unusually large drop in points. I haven’t checked, but I assume a drop in offense in the NFL would be the reason.

I’m not writing them down, but I did do a quick count, and there were only seven single-game scores of 150 or more points, down down from 13 last year, and 18 in 2013. Yikes.
All-Time Win/Loss Though Eight Years:

Stringer: 76-36
SenorBeef: 71-41
Petey: 67-45
Justin_Bailey: 63-49
RNATB: 59-53
VarlosZ: 59-53
Hamlet: 56-56
furt/Jules Andre: 51-61
Omni/Hermits: 48-64
Ellis Dee: 45-67
RetroVertigo: 39-73
dalej42: 38-74

No one winds up moving up or down the all-time rankings from last year.
Aside from the general depression in points scored, however, there appears to be a move toward overall parity in the league. As a VERY quick & dirty method to measure this, I compared the second-highest scoring team to the second-lowest scoring team every year (lopping off the top and bottom to get rid of outliers and smooth out the data a bit). It’s not perfect – sometimes two teams would really separate from the pack together – but it gives a decent sense of the range in team quality from year to year. The difference is given in points per game:

'16: 16.75
'15: 19.26
'14: 32.37
'13: 36.77
'12: 30.14
'11: 27.79
'10: 32.90
'09: 25.68

On the other hand, there doesn’t seem to be a ton of volatility, i.e. teams moving from the bottom of the standings to the top or vice versa. Anecdotally, RNATB seems to have had a mix of fat and lean years, and teams occasionally spike up or down, but most teams have tended to stay in their lanes, as suggested by the overall records above. A problem? A testament to the fact that fantasy football is, in the long run, a skill game? Beats me.
Finally, Petey winds up with the Points Championship, scoring 2018.77 including Weeks 15 &16. As we might expect, this is easily the lowest high score we’ve ever had (see OP).

And finally, a hearty congratulations to SenorBeef. At long last breaking out of that (frankly hilarious) cycle of 3rd Place finishes, he takes the title primarily on the strength of two things: the connection of Aaron Rodgers (#1 scoring QB this year) to Jordy Nelson (#2 WR), and Jay Ajayi’s crazy mid-season breakout, with assists from a deep WR corps (2nd, 15th, 21st, 31st) and a very deep RB corps (11th, 16th, 25th, 26th, 31st, 32nd). The latter, especially, bodes well for future success (assuming he can find a QB to replace Rodgers in the next year or two, that is).

Well played!

Does top scorer in the league qualify? Or did I just get lucky?

I hear crow is pretty tasty when fried.

Conditionals did not apply.

Based on standings, I’ll be picking 4th and Beef will be picking last (12th). 2.4 is the 16th pick, 3.12 is the 36th pick, which is a difference of 20. The conditional was for “more than 20”, meaning it doesn’t apply.

So that teeny tiny sliver of a points differential that dropped me to the 4th pick also cost me moving my 5th round pick up 4 spots.

Apparently, this wasn’t sarcasm.

… Now let’s see if I remember that I already wrote this down, or if I wind up working it out all over 6 months from now.

Congrats Beef. You earned it.

Putting it out there now, anyone looking to stock up on veteran talent should talk to me. I want picks and I want them now (or rather, before the draft in August, when we’re all thinking about Fantasy again).

Sure it was. Just hitting my payback tour for shit talkers.

I notice that the man himself didn’t respond, not that I expected it.

I love - by which I mean hate - that I traded my second-round pick to Varlos when my team was the dog’s bollocks and looked set for a top-three finish, and I traded for Varlos’ second-rounder when his team was mired in a sea of crap. Having said that, the fifth pick might really be worth something this year - Dalvin Cook might still be there, for example (I’m assuming Fournette will be long gone but I suppose that depends on where he’s drafted).

Congrats to Beef on the win. I really struggled this year, especially toward the end, with not giving a shit anymore. I was really excited to start the season, being projected to win it all and having an OK draft (I sure wish I dumped more keepers though), but the fucking injuries just sucked any interest in the league.

Still, I like my team for next year. David Johnson is a stud, and I have a ton of WR depth. My team is getting older, with Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles, and Brandon Marshall on the downside of their careers, but I like some of my younger talent. I’m still weak at the QB position and TE position, but such is life.

… I still have tight ends to trade.

Martavis Bryant celebrated his reinstatement back into the NFL by running a 4.27 40-yard dash.

Draft tomorrow.
