SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year Seven

Are you sure? I thought that was the rule in hhm instead of this league.

Picks 5-8 are just the same as 5th-8th places in the official final standings (as determined by the results of the consolation bracket.

And, since I currently own you 1st Rounder, I’m glad to see your TE had a great game tonight.

I believe we carried it over from the HHM league a few years ago for the same reason we started it in the HHM league in the first place. It’s fun to play for something in the consolation bracket.

I don’t know whether our use of it predated HHM’s, but we definitely arrived at it independently. I remember proposing it when I realized that, if we left it alone and just used straight reverse order of standings for the whole draft, everyone in the consolation bracket would much rather lose than win, and there’d even be a strong incentive for people to subtly tank.

There’s an unusual circumstance this year, since **Justin **and **RNATB **swapped 1st Rounders and are now facing each other in the 5th place game. So, as it happens, we have the situation we were trying to avoid since both players would probably prefer to lose. (Or, actually, RNATB would prefer to lose since that would give him the 5th pick instead of the 6th, but Justin already traded RNATB’s pick to me, so he’d rather win since it won’t affect his 1st Round but *will *move him up a slot in Rounds 2+. So, I guess everyone wants Justin to win … except for Varlos. No shenanigans, you two!)

I like the system we have as is, but if people wanted to change it I think the only alternative would be to make the consolation bracket totally meaningless to draft order, such that the 5-8 picks are already determined by the time the playoffs start.

Pretty sure you’re conflating the leagues. I remember you originally proposing it for the stated reason, but it was in the HHM league like 7 years ago. (Fairly early in my tenure as commish of that league.)

We eventually brought it into this league with little discussion; there was no opposition because it just makes sense.

It looks like you initially proposed it as a mirror of HHM, but it did go through with almost no argument.

We might need to consider appointing a League Historian this offseason.

It actually looks like someone (presumably Ellis) proposed giving the winner of the consolation bracket the 1st overall pick in the setup/rules discussion thread. Then, later, on 10/27/09, Beef addressed that idea and suggested we manually do a tournament for the 1st pick among the 9-12 teams. A month later I then suggested something very close to our current set-up without reference to the earlier proposals (don’t know if I had them in mind or not; my recollection is that it just occurred to me when I realized I’d rather lose my consolation bracket games that year, but who knows). Then, a month after that, Justin suggested the final tweak regarding the disposition of the 7th pick.

Yahoo says I’m currently 84% to win, but I think that’s generous. **furt **still has 6 players with afternoon/evening games, including his QB, one of that QB’s WRs, and Todd Gurley. He could make up a lot of points in a hurry.

Oh fuck, today is Sunday? How the fuck… man. I didn’t adjust any of my fantasy rosters. I would’ve started Denard Robinson over Travis Benjamin. Shit.

Christmas fucked with my sense of time, too. Doesn’t feel like Sunday.

Not much chance of shenanigans. I’m pointlessly squishing everyone with my second string.

Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen … heh hehe ha Ha HaHAHAHAHA!

I think I’ve got this.

I’m kinda regretting trading away David Johnson, but thankfully I have him as a keeper in my money league.

Congratulations on a well-deserved title, Varlos. Disappointing outcome for me, especially considering how many points I put up this week. Still, I’m excited about next year now that I have a proper QB. especially if Lamar Miller signs for a team that actually runs the ball sometimes.

Congrats Varlos!

At the moment, the only rules discussions on the docket for next preseason are whether to make the very-late trade deadline permanent and whether we want to revisit how we score missed extra point after seeing the effect of the new NFL rule. Please mention it here if I’ve forgotten one or if you have a proposal in mind and you want to make sure we don’t forget about it come next August.
I did think it might be nice to keep track of the Points Champion every year (including playoffs), to recognize great teams that maybe got a little unlucky in the playoffs. Below are the Points Champs so far. The only year where the playoffs made a difference was in 2013, when Justin ended the regular season #1 in points.
Points Champions (League Champions in parentheses)

'09 Hamlet; 2207.00 (RNATB)
'10 Stringer; 2167.03 (Stringer)
'11 Stringer; 2229.75 (Beef)
'12 Stringer; 2095.83 (Hamlet)
'13 SenorBeef; 2132.81 (Varlos)
'14 Stringer; 2177.27 (Stringer)
'15 VarlosZ; 2183.64 (Varlos)

Thanks to everyone for the congratulations on my, ahem, championship.

While I think I did a pretty good job putting my roster together and managing my lineup, I don’t have any problem admitting that I had a *very *fortunate year in a lot of ways. So, let me take a moment to break down my year into things I did well versus things that went well.
Things I Did Well
– **Held on to Doug Martin. ** I got several trade inquiries regarding Martin before and during the season, many of them involving more than fair (for the time) offers, but I reasoned that, even if Martin was unlikely to return to form, most of the scenarios that involved my getting to the playoffs involved him doing just that. I was right, and he did, ending the season as the #6 RB.

Getting Danny Woodhead & DeAngelo Williams last year. They were the throw-ins for my (awful) Gio for Hopkins/Ryan/J. Bell trade. Obviously I didn’t expect to have the years they did (#4 and #8 RBs), but I got to choose my throw-ins from a long list, and I chose well.

Trading away Larry Fitzgerald. Didn’t actually help me this year, but it helps me a ton in the upcoming draft, and, come on, it was pretty ballsy to trade away my #1 WR right before the playoffs started.
Things That Went Well
The Panthers started 14-0. This is undoubtedly the biggest reason I won this year. The previously underwhelming Panthers all of sudden turned into a pretty excellent team, and over the years I’d bungled my way into relying on their starting QB, RB, TE, and DEF. Those guys all had awesome years (1st, 16th, 4th, and 5th at their positions), and I rode the wave. I wish I could say I saw it coming, but, no, I just got lucky.

Great injury luck. The only meaningful injury that cost an actual contributor more than a couple of games was Tony Romo’s, and of course that didn’t actually matter because Cam Newton had such a great year. It actually probably helped by saving me from making a couple of bad lineup decisions during the year.

Getting Woodhead and D. Williams as throw-ins. Yeah, I picked right, but this is mostly in the “luck” column. Especially with Williams, who somehow is the #4 RB on the year despite starting only 9 games and barely playing in the games he didn’t start. Since I never had to worry about starting him while he was backing up Le’Veon Bell, he was just super-concentrated fantasy production (averaging 20.94 points in the games he started, which would be best in the league over the whole year).
We’ll see what happens next year when my Carolina players regress toward the mean, Woodhead gets old, and Williams goes back to the bench. gulp

Good lord, Stringer has been the points leader four out of the seven years of this league? And the other three years there were three different points leaders? I don’t know what to make of that, other than to be seriously impressed.

Congrats to Varlos on another Championship!

I’ve got some big decisions to make next year as my team seems to have a perennial spot in the 4th Place/5th Place range. That’s not bad (it’s actually damn good over a seven year span), but I feel like a Championship of my own is getting further and further away.

Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Frank Gore, Jason Witten, and Anquan Boldin are all older than dirt. And Matt Forte and Julian Edelman aren’t much younger. I’ll definitely be willing to listen to any trade offer ahead of next year’s draft, especially if you’re looking to unload promising young guys for a “Win Now!” run.

Of course, my team is also just good enough that I could just as easily pull a Varlos and have everything break perfectly for me next year. Especially with the #1 RB.

For the record, I am good with keeping the extended trade deadline. I don’t see the point of having one at all in a dynasty league, for that matter.
