That’s exactly what I was offering. Since I had Freeman and Bell, I wanted to come out of the draft with either the Detroit or the Atlanta backfield locked up. I worry that Coleman/Freeman will end up in a long term time share, while Bell is basically at the end of his rope and Abdullah should have an opportunity to be The Guy as earlier as next year.
Not just a handcuff; a successor. Charles is 28 and will be on a “cuttable” contract after this year.

Your logic is good … but IMO you overestimate what Abdullah will do with that chance. Abdullah is 5’9" 190, which is awfully small for a RB1 (and at 4.55, not especially fast). If/when Bell fades, it’s likely they bring in another mid-round pick to be the “big back” in a committee. I think Coleman (6.1", 210, 4.39) has a better chance of becoming a 300-touch guy, notwithstanding the presence of Freeman.

A possible successor, but I’d be pretty surprised if it actually happened – first because of ordinary roster churn (teams bring in new RBs all the time, he’d at least have to fight for the job), and second because his performance in the NFL thus far has been poor.
I see Omni is online, so this is just hypothetical. I’m wondering how best to deal with the 12-hour clock expiring in a situation where the season opener is looming close.
My initial thoughts:
Maybe 12 hours to the nearest 10:00 (AM or PM) after expiration. So like since the most recent pick was made at 8:46am, Omni would have until 10pm to make his pick. This mechanic would give us automatic knowledge of when our clock expires without having to have seen the thread. (Either 10pm tonight or 10am tomorrow morning.)
After expiring (@ 10:00), next guy (Ellis) is allowed to immediately post a pick, but if he waits he runs the risk of the late person (Omni) sneaking in and getting his rightful pick.
If next guy (Ellis) picks immediately, institute a 1-hour clock going forward. So the third guy (Beef) could immediately pick at 11pm, the fourth guy (Petey) at midnight, etc…
Everyone gets the full 12+ hours, though, so in this example, Beef can’t jump in until Ellis picks, or 10am, whichever comes first.
We’ve never needed such a mechanic before, and likely won’t in the future, but it’s fun to spitball ideas.
This is exactly why I agreed to the trade. I like Abdullah better than Coleman for 2015, but everything I read about Abdullah seemed to downplay his future. There are very few sportswriters out there who think he’ll be The Guy in Detroit. Whereas with Coleman/Freeman, one of them will probably be The Guy in ATL for years.
I think the best policy is probably to play it by ear. So much would depend on the circumstances, specifically how much time we have to complete the draft and how confident we are that the missing owner will show up before long. I don’t like the idea of handling it like they handle the NFL draft, where teams can rush their picks to the podium as long as the other guy is a no-show; if nothing else, it would seriously compress our draft, squeezing out all contemplation and trade discussion since the late guy can just swoop in and take our player if we don’t hurry. As it says in the draft instructions, there’s no skipping of an owner who misses his deadline without my go-ahead.
What I think would probably happen if we were forced to skip someone would be that we’d put a minimum gap between each pick (2-3 hours, say, assuming time allows), to give the absentee a chance to show up and redeem his draft, and also to preserve our ability to make moves. Sound reasonable?
Kind of convoluted. 12 hours is a reasonable window. I think if someone had a special reason to ask for more time, we’d allow it. Otherwise I’d just keep pushing their pick back, like the real NFL draft. Next person makes their pick, and if Omni gets back 3 hours after that, well, he gets to pick anyone on the board except the guy that was drafted while he was late. He could come in at any time and make the pick.
Edit: I see Varlos doesn’t like this. His solution is fine too. Not a big deal to me, but whatever inconveniences happen because of this should blow back on the late guy rather than the people after him.
I am not worried at all about getting through the draft in time, picks come quicker as the draft goes on.
Nipping this in the bud. Pick coming soon. Had a brief trade dalliance.
Javorius Allen - RB, Bal
I was gonna ask you if you you’d PM’ed Ellis, but then I remembered that he gave me a prerankings list because he wasn’t going to be around. So, here goes…
***** Ellis Dee selects: 2.9 TE Maxx Williams, Baltimore *****
I like it; TE is a big position of need for Ellis and Maxx is a good value here.
Beef is up; PM sent.
I’m probably taking Ajayi but I’m not quite fully decided. Going to over the lists and injury reports again. Kinda worried that he’s made it this far means there’s some news I didn’t see. Pick will come in not too long.
I’m fine with addressing a potential draft crisis on a case by case basis. We’re all huge fans of NFL football and we try to schedule the draft early enough to allow enough time. I was able to participate even while working an overnight shift for a couple of years. There aren’t too many trades after the second round so the later rounds go faster.
2.10 Jay Ajayi, RB. Petey is up.
One thing I’ve come across in reading scouting reports and projections and all that - if you’re 5’11, 207 pounds, you’ve got good size and you’re obviously capable of being a three down back and full time starter, but if you’re 5’9 207 pounds, you’re a tiny scatback who couldn’t possibly handle the load.
If that’s directed to me, of course I think it’s reasonable as that’s exactly the mechanic I suggested. (Mine was 1 hour instead of 2-3 hours, but it’s the same idea.)
I agree with the consensus that it’s irrelevant because we’ll likely never need any such policy. Mainly it’s for, like, say, I got run over by a bus this morning. At what point would you give up waiting on me? That kind of thing.
Actually, a better idea for handling an MIA owner:
Do nothing, just wait. But schedule a “live draft” time a couple/few days before opening kickoff, like say Tue 9pm - 11pm. Everyone be online and we can blast through the remainder of the draft in one sitting. Anyone who can’t attend would submit prerankings to the commissioner.
Also, thanks much for submitting my pick, VarlosZ. I’m good for my second pick, no need to go to my prerankings list. (And super psyched; I really wanted Williams. Yay!)
2.11 Cameron Artis-Payne, RB, Car
I’ll PM Ellis.
So I get my top two picks I pre-ranked with VarlosZ. Does that mean these are bad picks? I dunno, but despite his gimpy hamstring I still like:
Devin Funchess WR-Car
And VarlosZ, feel free to look at my third choice. I no longer want him and he probably wouldn’t be there when I pick in the third anyway.

PMing furt now.
He’s great value. I watched (too much of) him in college, and he drops way too many balls, is too slow, and is constantly dinged up, but he’s tall with a great catch radius, and with Benjamin’s injury, he’s the clear #1 in Carolina this year. I don’t like him to succeed, but he’s going to be fed the ball constantly, so he should accumulate stats and he may develop. Great value at the end of the second round.
