SDMB FF Dynasty League: Year Six

We got a week to make the 13 picks between less than half the league at the ass end of the draft. I think we’ll be okay. Say hi to the candy stripers.

Hope everything is okay bud.

No rush, Retro, we’ve got time. Godspeed.

Has the running back focus/high value in this league started mostly this year? I don’t remember running backs being treated like such rare commodities in the draft in previous years.

I wonder if it’s because, by now, we’ve all got some late round development WRs on our rosters, but RBs with starting potential tend to be much less common.

RB prospects also tend to develop faster and get a chance to sink or swim faster than developmental WRs, which may mean they’re discarded faster.

Thanks for the patience, guys.

Pick 4.04 Alfred Blue RB Hou

It’s not my pick right? Yahoo has me picking here but I don’t get a pick until the supplemental round, right?

There is a guy on the board that I want, if anyone is interested in swapping with my supplemental round pick, with me adding a 2015 pick.

In 2010, 7 of the first 24 were RB’s (Dexter McCluster could be 8). In 2011, 12 of the first 24 picks were RB’s. In 2012, 9 RB’s. In 2013, 11 RB’s. And this year, there were only 7.

I’m not sure what to make of it, other than it changes year to year. There are always a few highly drafted talented guys who are drafted very early.

What I think has happened is that with so few true workhorse RB’s, some drafters value them more and thus draft even backup RB’s or lottery tickets, earlier and earlier. For example, in 2012, Isiah Pead, a backup, went #12, Lamar Miller went 13, Hillman 14, LaMichael James 15, etc. In 2013, it was Joseph Randle at 6, Christine Michael at 8, Marcus Lattimore at 11, Knile Davis at 16.

But that was true even back in 2010, where Hardesty went 8, Gerhardt at 10, McCluster at 15, Deji Karim (remember him?) went 17.

I think that there are 5 or 6 rookies worth drafting early, and then it’s a crap shoot. Some people want to take their shot at the RB position, and do. But the problem is that not many of those lottery tickets work out. Only once in a while (Demarco Murray, Shane Vereen in 2011, Zac Stacy and Andre Ellington in 2013) does the lottery ticket pay off. But you still have to play the game.

I think if I continued to look at it, the same would be true for almost every position, though. The rookie draft is a crapshoot after the first 5 or 6 picks. The problem comes when you draft a lottery ticket when there is a more talented player still available.

Right. It looks like it’s up to me. I’m not going to be around at all the rest of the day, so I’m going to make my pick in a few minutes.

OK, here goes…

4.05 Storm Johnson (RB-JAX)

Hamlet is on the clock. PM Sent.

Drafting RBs feels to me like trying to develop pitching prospects in baseball. They just flame out at such a high rate, but because (as that would imply) there are so few really useful ones, they’re really valuable when they do pan out, so you have to keep plugging away.

But yeah, drafting a RB is often the same as just drafting vapor. I feel much more confident that I’m going to get *something *from, say, a young WR.

As for whether the focus on RBs is new, I doubt it. Look at our 2011 draft. Mark Ingram was a 1st Rounder on a good offense, and so a legit #1 pick. All the other RBs were 2nd Rounders or later with players in front of them on the depth chart and no assurances that they’d ever get a chance to be the main guy, but a ton of them still went early. Half of the first two Rounds was devoted the RBs, and the success stories have been DeMarco Murray and … hmmm. Maybe Ingram or Vereen can still turn things around. Meanwhile, the other half those two rounds includes AJ Green, Julio Jones, Cam Newton, Jordy Nelson, Victor Cruz, and the San Fran DEF (Randall Cobb and Antonio Brown went in the 3rd). That draft is probably the most extreme case, but still.

I totally forgot that happened

Am I?

I realized I have problem with my roster. Back on page one, I listed my cuts and keepers, and I kept the Titans and cut the Chargers, but checking it today to decide which defense to draft, I saw that the Titans are available and the Chargers are on my team. If possible, I’d like to switch those two teams out.

Since no one else has drafted a defense, I assume it’s OK. If it’s not, I’ll just draft the Titans here. If it is, I’ll be drafting the Eagles defense to go with the Titans defense.

Wow, my defenses suck. Oh well.

This is another case of Yahoo and the thread not matching up: over there you cut Tennessee, and Yahoo gave me a nice one-sheet of everyone’s cuts & keepers, so that’s what I worked off of.

I’ll switch them out because I really doubt it’s made a difference,** but if anyone would have drafted San Diego’s DEF, please don’t hesitate to let us know, and we’ll walk it back if at all possible**.

Sounds good to me. And I am in the market for a better than, or even average, defense.

I fixed the Draft Result page so that Stringer’s supplemental pick is at the end, and the keepers in each round are now listed after the new picks.

I think that’s a damn good analogy. Nothing much else to add, just wanted to give this a thumbs up.

It sounds like Hamlet drafted the Eagles (no objection from me to do his switch as requested) so furt is on the clock?

Yeah, I guess so. Missed the part where he said he’d be drafting Philly.

I’ll send **furt **a PM just in case.

Sorry, lost track of the order there.

Bailing on the rookie rankings, I think I likes me some…

5.02 Jordan Todman (RB-Jax)

I spent about 45 minutes collating three different sets of dynasty rookie rankings, plugged in our draft results, and came up with two different "BPA"s for this pick. And then promptly threw that all out the window and took Todman instead. Ah well, maybe I’ll get one of those BPA guys next pick.

Here’s a recap of the draft to date, plus I filled in the remaining picks since I got tired of checking the Draft Results page on yahoo.
