Well, you’re trading him to me, so he’ll be a beast for a game and a half and promptly tear an ACL.
**RNATB **sends BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Fred Taylor (i.e. the Patriots’ RB committee) to **dalej42 **(Warner’s Brothers) in exchange for Anquan Boldin.
By the way, I think it’s a good idea to try and post every trade that gets done in the thread so we have a record of it. If nothing else, it should be fun to look back 2 or 3 years later and judge who got the better end.
I didn’t like doing this trade, but I’m desperate at RB and I already have Andre Johnson at WR. Boldin is due for his annual midseason injury.
That is… very bad IMO. No NE RB is ever going to be anywhere as reliable or good as Boldin.
I made an audible “ugh” noise when I saw this trade in my email.
I’m going to make sure I have plenty of coffee before next year’s draft so I don’t sleep through it! I’m much stronger at WR, and I know that New England RBs are always plug in and pray, but if Wells gets hurt again, I’m screwed at that position.
My RBs:
Beanie Wells
Ricky Williams
Maurice Morris
LaRod Stephens-Howling
James Davis
Dimitri Nance
My WRs:
Andre Johnson
Anquan Boldin
Santana Moss
Devery Henderson
Steve Breaston
Patrick Crayton
Justin Gage
I think you might’ve been able to land an RB in the Forte/Bradshaw/Addai/Thomas type range - conservatively - for a top 5 WR.
The Patriots are gonna draft a running back next year though.
In fairness, I think “top 5 WR” is really pushing it. He’s off to a good start this year, of course, but he’s gonna come back to the pack a bit; he’s still on a team with a good defense and a (relatively) run-first offense, which means Baltimore isn’t going to be in a lot of high scoring shootouts. Since 2005, his fantasy ranks at his positions have been: 8th, 17th, 19th, 7th, 23rd. So, “top 20 WR” is probably more accurate, and looking long term he’s 30 years old, so it’s not like he has a whole lot of time before that becomes “top 30 WR,” and then “top 45 WR,” etc.
Yeah, I’ve always valued Boldin much more highly than most people. I think he was always the better of the two Cardinals receivers, believe it or not; it was just injuries that held him back.
Even that was hardly a knock on him, though, because they’re always different injuries, like the facial fractures he suffered in '08.
I was… surprised to see the trade accepted. Not that I don’t think the Law Firm and Fragile Fred are worth as much; it’s just that their value is greater on paper than IRL, because you never know who will get the carries in New England.
On the other hand, the Maroney trade, Fred’s nagging hamstring pull and especially the Randy Moss trade might make BJGE a fantasy star this year. Danny Woodhead isn’t a threat to steal carries; he’s Kevin Faulk’s replacement.
ETA: Basically, I looked at Dale’s running backs and threw up in my mouth a little bit, and realized that this is a guy who’ll be willing to give up some extra value for help at the position.
One other thing I considered was that I can easily see that if Wells gets hurt again and the Cardinals are in last place, he could easily end up on IR if the Cards are playing for next year.
Plus, with no Moss and all of NE’s December/January games in cold weather cities, they’ll be running the ball a bit more.
Those numbers are somewhat deceptive due to all his time missing from injuries. He’s been a top 5 WR from points per game pretty much his whole career. Which is better than just being the 17th ranked WR or whatever - if a guy puts up 20 points per game but is injured half the season, that’s better than a guy who puts up 10 points per game for the whole season. With Boldin, if you can start him, you’re getting very good performance, and if you can’t, well, you’ll be starting someone else anyway. So I feel like using his raw production numbers is misleading. There’s no guarantee he’ll be injured this year - he has had a lot of injuries, but rarely the same injuries, and rarely the lingering types.
He is 30, true, but receivers can play at a high level until at least 33. Especially guys like him who work more on strength/size/body control than being a burner.
Looking at the dynasty angle, what are the chances Green-Ellis is going to be the Pats started next year or two years down the road? Boldin is pretty much guaranteed to be a productive receiver for someone.
I don’t see any part of this that isn’t highly unfavorable to Dale. I realize there’s a level of desperation, but certainly Boldin could’ve been shopped around and gotten something better. He didn’t even post to the thread he was interested in moving Boldin IIRC.
I don’t intend to object to pretty much any trades made in any SDMB leagues - people are honestly trying to improve their team and play ethically - but this would be the sort of thing you could make a case for if you were so inclined.
Fair point about picking up points from plug-ins when/if he’s injured, but health is a skill, and it’s not like injuries are the only reason he hasn’t been a top 5 fantasy WR – in '06 he played 16 games and was 17th, last season he played 15 games and was 23rd. Anyway, I’m probably more down on him than most, but in that offense I’d be mildly surprised if he got to 1,200 yards.
He wasn’t shopping Boldin. I offered the trade to him, not vice versa.

Well, I did overstate it by calling him top 5 (although currently he is) but even so, does the trade look reasonable from either a short term or dynastic perspective?
I want to start Lance Moore, but I’m having trouble deciding to sit Braylon Edwards, Randy Moss, Josh Cribbs, or Eddie Royal. I guess maybe I should sit Moss with the Favre elbow thing, but I feel like they’re gonna force a TD to him one way or another.
I’m fine with a veto of this trade. But, I need some help at RB and I’m willing to offer up WR help to any team that needs it.
To add to your problems today, Dale, the Rams defense put up -7 points, which is 1 point higher than the lowest practical score anyone could get from anyone.
Looks like I’m back where I belong, for a week at least.
Barring Shiancoe outscoring Randy Moss/Braylon Edwards/Viking D, I’m still indefeated, as is Ellis Dee. And we play this week.
And… my team sucks. And two of my three good players may be out with injury. Blah.
I know I’ve been lucky this year with the scheduling, so it’s not like my team has really earned the undefeated thing. After tomorrow’s game I should be around 2nd-3rd in scoring so it’s not grossly unfair, but Hamlet and I almost have the same score at 5-0 vs 0-5. The whole head to head thing can be pretty crazy. I got hosed as bad as anyone has ever gotten hosed last year in the big league with that.

I cannot catch a break this year and left my winning points on the bench. Then again, I started real slow last year too and eventually turned it around.
