SDMB Footie Focus: december

England vs. Wales. Would I, could I, cheer for my adopted country against my country of birth?

Yes, I think, although Wales topping the group with Ingerlond second would be the ideal outcome. Looks like Speed, Hartson & Giggs will have a last hurrah before retirement in two hopefully gripping games.

Would you like to borrow a stadium for your “home” game?

In other news that will please our friends from the far side of Offa’s Dyke, Simon Davies has resumed light training this week. Thank goodness! Also, Jamie Redknapp isn’t far behind him (but don’t hold your breathe)
Only fly in the ointment is that it appears Goonerville is all set for the off.

Oh well.

Thought London looked impressive yesterday. What would it be like if we won a footie pot . . .

Since I last looked in I have seen a Keane hatrick in a five goal performance (followed that evening by the Darkness at Brixton, which was jolly).

We have been drawn against relagtion fodder Palace, at home (there’s another £80 out of Owl coffers)

England have been drawn against the easisest possible qualifying group.

Things are looking up.

Spurs have got a new manager and I have no idea who it is - although the players do.

I always have after thoughts when I post.

Anyhow…

In the spirit of the saturday moody satellite games:

All the premiership goals…(don’t be put off by the title)

Gary Doherty (The ginger Pele) is big in Finland.

THe mind is boggling.

Well, If they’re that keen, they can have him for a couple of pine bookshelves and a mobile phone mast.

Spurs back for Diego - It’s interesting that we seemingly want this kid so much. I worry it’s as much an emotional interest as it is a sound business move; I sense the Board want an iconic “Tottenham type player” (in the old style sense) and this is the one . . .

Meanwhile, in the world of grown ups, the three remaining English clubs all won their Groups, which has to be fairly impressive. Personally, I can’t put a fag paper betwwent them in either the Premiership or the Champions League . . . All I’d punt on is Henry for Prem player of the year and, (almost) probably World Player of the Year.

Must be very disappointing for the Jocks, I think they said on the radio that Celtic occupied all four positions in the Group during last nights games . . . must be upsetting.

I am lucky enough that my local pub shows the english fottie from the norwegian tv. Anyone know if Chelsea vs Bolton is on the foreign television this weekend?

Do try to keep up, Wanderers.

Owl provided this handy link for those with access to moody satellite card-owning pubs:

http://www.knplogic.co.uk/sport/british.html - looks like you might be in luck!

Wooohoooo! Im adding that one to the favourites folder.

btw my particular pub now has access to Norwegian & Spanish television English premiership games so we usually get a choice!!

hethethethetheth pethethethetheth sam allardyce. Scorchio.

As we speak the THFC AGM is going on - I was going to go but have to do this thing we call “work” instead. Its probably for the best, I get all aerated at the fuckpuppets running my club.

They will make an announcement at the AGM about the manager apparently. I know they have picked someone, but have no idea at all who it is, other than it does not represent a big leap forward (unfortunately). Still that nice Martin O’Neil now has a reason to move on.

I wouldn’t be suprised if the Diego story wasn’t planted to keep the AGM of the back pages.

In other news - according to Mihir Bohse in the Telegraph today - leeds will run out of money on January 19th, and wil be forced into administration. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of lads.

What no billionaires coming to bail them out? Personally I would be quite interested to see the consequences of a premiership team going to the wall (as long as it isn’t the one that I support. Maybe the shockwaves would cause the industry to wise up a little and cutback on the old expenses (namely salaries). I understand that it is a very complex issue however, but like i said the consequences would certainlt be interesting.

There are apparently three syndicates - the shady sheik who may be short of the shekels. The post man, and a.n.other.

In many ways; the two best clubs to own from a business point of view are Newcastle and Leeds, as they can’t lose support to other local rivals. So it takes a special kind of genius to fuck it up at them. Step forward messrs ridsdale and Shepherd.

The only club I have any kind of inside knowledge about financially is THFC. They have completely changed their paystructure and transfer policy. Payment is now heavily based on results, and as such always affordable. Also they are now refusing to buy players without a risidual transfer balance. This is becoming more common in the league I believe.

And the new spurs manager? Alex fucking McLeish. And yes that is his middle name. (This from a mate who is at the AGM but is already pissed and can be a wee bit “excitable” (ie mental), so keep hold of that salt cellar, you may well need it).

You ignored it here first!

Im impressed! not a whisper on the BBC yet th SDMB has the news already. Who needs a national news service whn you have a good quallity BB!!

I’m out for the rest of the day, and if you’re mate is right, Spurs are out for lunch and the rest of the season. Please not McLeish . . .

Yep, I agree with the Spurs transfer and pay policies . . . but we’ve spoken/written about them before. It looks to have been the plan since Keane arrived and we started to let the ‘senior’ (read expensive wages) players go.

However, quite where Diego fits into that, I don’t know; you have to be pretty confident about the kid to think £8+ million is an investment.

As I say please treat anything from Drunken Duncan (my pal) with EXTREME scepticism. However this is the word (unofficial) at the AGM. He’s supposedly coming in January.

Isn’t he a ginger (not the campbell kind, the strachan kind)? There are limits. No moustaches. No ginges. Them’s the rules.

Hah! told you it could be cods!

Levy has just said that it Pleat and Houghton till the end of the season. After that - who knows (I still think it will be Mourinho).

I shall be having words with young Duncan.

So it’s Mr Punch till May.

After last night’s performance, though, I’ll bet he drops his salary requirements.

That’s all I have to say on the matter

He’d do for me - but I think he wants the Liverpool job - which will surely be going in the summer.

Damn! My local has been warned not to show the Bolton - Chelsea game. I think the idea is that civilization as we know it would come to an end if a pub full of people watch their local team play on a foreign station.

Champs League draw:

VfB Stuttgart v CHELSEA
Porto v MANCHESTER UNITED
Celta Vigo v ARSENAL

  • apart from all getting reasonable draws, they all play the second leg at home.
    The rest:

Real Sociedad v Lyon
Bayern Munich v Real Madrid
Sparta Prague v AC Milan
Deportivo La Coruna v Juventus
Lokomotiv Moscow v Monaco
When I looked last night, Spurs were 4/1 at Newcastle and Bolton were 10/1 at Chelski . . . anyone feel optimistic ?
