SDMB/IRL friends

Hmmm, well I count ** beatle, Bubble Girl, and Sealemon ** as close friends.

Then there are those that I have met that I felt an instant connection to. like ** Byz, Robgruver, TheNerd, Irishman, JimB, Zyada, ChefTroy, Grace, Balance, PurpleBear and her friend MaidenUnicorn, ** I hope that one I will be able to spend more time with them and develope closer friendships with them.

But I consider the friendships I have with those Dopers I haven’t met yet every bit as real and as important as the ones with those I have met from the boards or that I have known in real life years before I ever heard of the SDMB. But that’s just me.

AAArrgggghhhh, I forgot ** CoolDude, Mamapotamus, MsRobyn and LittleNemo **! I’m sorry. Look if I met you and didn’t spit in your eye and say I hate you, I like you !

I was kind of in a hurry this morning when I posted, but I’d like to take a post to say thanks and I love you to the people who mean the most to me on the SDMB.

First of all, the obvious. robgruver, iampunha, and Tripler all have a special place in my heart. They’ve all offered a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen and a mouth for advice when I’ve needed it. That they’re all hot has nothing to do with this. No, really.

The Chat Dwellers, especially tiggeril, Nymysys, MamaHen, MrCynical, Sapphire Bullet, Max Torque, Wood Thrush, Ad Noctum, and all the others who make chat such a fun place to hang out in. And a HUGE kiss and hug to Jophiel for allowing us to do it. I may not have met all these people IRL, but I know I will someday.

The Houston Dopers, beatle, Ayesha and LionSOB, and everyone else. The hospitality y’all showed when I was here in April went a long way towards helping me decide to move here permanently. I look forward to spending more time with y’all and getting to know you better. I’m also gonna throw Purplebear in here. I know she’s in San Antonio, but I look forward to seeing her the next time she’s in Houston.

And a very special thanks to the people who allowed me the pleasure of their company and the use of their floors when I was making my now-legendary (in my own mind, anyway) Road Trip: Nymysys, Medea’s Child and Le Sang, the DC Dopers who put up with an untoward episode involving a turkey sandwich and evilbeth who did a great job of dispelling the myth that ALL Tennesseans are backwards hicks.

I also wanna say that I miss all the Minnesota Dopers. Y’all are a fun, wonderful bunch and I promise I will try to come up and visit once in a while. And we should save our pop tops so we can get Rysdad a computer.

With a couple of exceptions, the Dopers I’ve had the privilege of meeting are some of the most wonderful people I’ve met. I feel fortunate that I picked up that first Straight Dope book in 1986, and even more fortunate that I got addicted to it enough to get into the SDMB.

I also want to extend a kiss and hug to each of the moderators and administrators who make this board such a positive experience, and a kiss and hug with oak-leaf cluster to Jerry the Tech God for feeding the squirrels and to Cecil and Ed Zotti for so many years of fighting the good fight against that evil Ignorance. And a kiss and hug to Slug Signorino for hours of evil laughter.

Robin

I enjoy all the people I met at the Minnesota Dope Fests, and I also like talking on the phone to Cajun Man, and occasionally DrMatrix, (Cajun Man and I do most of the talking.) Someday we will meet face to face. Zenster is also someone I would love to meet IRL someday. He has helped me so much (re-did my resume) and I enjoy talking to him through e-mail. I also like e-mailing Jeremy’s Evil Twin, who is very interesting and a good friend.

I also like talking to Ad Noctum, whom I haven’t heard from in a while.

There are more but I need to get moving so I am not late for work.

Met a few of ya… love the dopers, I really do.

Looking forward to meeting a number of you in my travels, or in yours!

AlbertRose, the fondness is mutual, heaven help us.

E.

of course we are. I’ve got a new karaoke bit I’m working on for y’all…

Unfortunately life is getting some punches in at the moment and interfering with my efforts to make and retain friendships. I have made a few friendships with Dopers, friendships which I value greatly and hope to expand and add to in the future. Perhaps one day when I get the hang of this “chat” business…

Those of you that I try to maintain e-mail conversations with, I hope you already know that I do hold you as friends. I’ve been slightly less communicative recently, but please don’t take that to mean that you aren’t in my thoughts. Hugs to you all, and hugs to the SDMB for being a place that brings together such great people.

he he he he but Persephone (and soon BunnyGirl & Cranky), can you really call me a friend if I’ve addicted you to a whole new time/$$ cost?

(Mags, I gottan idea! why not kill two birds w/one stone as it were - have My son watch ** Cranky Jr**??? he’s mostly responsible )

Isn’t that what friends are for?

I’m amazed none of the Balto/DC dopers has chimed in here. We do more stuff together-and not just dopefests, than any other group, 'cept posibbly NYC, and I still think we have them beat on quantity.
[I love you, man voice]

I’d rather be with the people of the SDMB than with the finest people in the world!

[/I love you, man voice]

There are so many people from the board that have touched my life in a positive way, that have been there for me when I needed them, and that I am proud to call “friend”. You all know the reasons (and the circumstances, I think) why you’re on the list. So I’ll just name you.

Home of the Braves
lurkernomore
Scralden
purplebear
TroubleAgain
UncleBill
katiekilldare
Oicu812
Pucette
Maeglin
Gadarene
Tygr
hardygrrl
Verrain
Arden Ranger
Crunchy Frog
Tripler

and never forgotten, Falcon.

And with every post, every Dopefest, the list has the potential of getting larger and larger. Thank you, all, for being there.

I’ll remind you of that in a few months when you’re hiding rubber stamps in your lunchbox, carefully removing all price tags from purchases, and mentally re-doing some room in the house as your designated “stamp room”

I recall my mother telling me that rubber stampers can get “really, really pathetic” sometimes. Their junkie-like behavior is amazing. She meant it in a good way, though–she’s a stamper herself. And she recently offloaded over a hundred stamps on me, while telling me “this didn’t even make a dent in what I’ve actually got here.”

So that’s not only what friends are for, it’s family, too!

Amen. (see sig)

Most people wouldn’t know that Muffinman is one of my best friends in real life, even though we never ever see each other. Course, he doesn’t post much, so I doubt many would even recognize his name to begin with. Tazzy, his girlfriend, is a semi close friend. Meaning we’re polite, but I wouldn’t call us close. Omega007 and I used to be close, but he’s kinda weird.

Airman Doors is one of my closest online friends. I’m gonna miss him tons when he leaves…

Sorry I forgot you, Tygr. Forgive me?

I consider all the Bamadopers IRL friends, even though we have rare Dopefests and SOME people decide not to show up (coughOsipDireWolfNightingaleandothercough)

In fact, Simetra came down to help me celebrate my birthday earlier this year (which means that he is OBVIOUSLY cool, since I let him hang out with me :)).

As for the rest of you…I just haven’t met you yet.

Ah . . . the dopers I’ve met, the places I’ve been. I’m not about to make a list because this lab closes in half an hour, and I just can’t name everyone I’ve met or want to meet. Suffice it to say that it’s between 50 and 60.

The sad (or happy, depending) part is that the number of people I want to meet is larger than the number I have met. And no, I’m not going to type out THAT list either, because A) this place closes at 11, B) I’d forget more than one person, and C) I’d really rather not start crying right now.

Let’s just say I have more friends on this board than I’d had in my life previous to June of 2000. And the Atlantic-area dopers are way, way cool.

Amy, wherever you are, I hope somehow this reaches you. With all our hearts, you are missed.

Still holding the vigil for Falc.

I have met/talked to and consider myself friends with a long list of dopers. Out of the ones that I have personally met, though, I’m closest with Robot Arm, who I see every chance I get, and Geobabe, who does a mean museum tour.
