SDMB Monthly Photo Competition - rolling discussion thread

Thank you! That really was changing weather as well - it was blowing an absolute hoolie, and that distant rain landed on us about twenty minutes later!

j

Just realized what the date is. Should e have an April poll up?

j

Just now put up the poll.

mmm

  What’s wrong with this picture?

The voting deadline is 11:45 p.m.US EDT** **on Thursday, MAY 2.

Long week, & long day on Sat (can you say 4:30am alarm?) so I passed out & never put in my picture.
I really wish we could just load them here directly instead on needing to log in somewhere else & load them & then link to that somewhere else. I prolly shoulda done that on Sun as the poll wasn’t up yet even though it was after the deadline.
It was a double change - a long exposure on a bridge over a highway in India so had both cars changing lanes & a change of perspective because the drive on the wrong side of the road over there.

I missed the deadline also. I spent the month hoping something would strike me as a fitting photo, but alas it was not to be. Nothing in my old photos seemed to fit either.

Congratulations to @aurora_maire and @beowulff, winners of the April contest.

May contest thread is here.

“Traditionally, a still life is a collection of inanimate objects arranged as the subject of a composition”.

Huh. Gotta think on that. Good topic!

On seeing the title, my immediate reaction was to wish that I had a retort or some other obvious distillation equipment to try to incorporate into a still life.

My first thought for an alternate interpretation was a sleeping cat.

My first thought was I need to find a woodpecker.

Question. I’m sharing my photos with Flickr. The way I usually do it results in a fairly small screen image. It looks all right on a phone, but not so much on a regular computer monitor. If I share it using BB code, it appears much larger, but then I get the message from Discourse that I can’t share media images (or something). Is there a fix for that?

If you click on the share arrow and select BB Code I think that would allow you to share your photos at different sizes.

Also wanted to point out that @Darren_Garrison has posted three images in the thread mistakingly thinking that it was an expired contest. Do we need to get him to select just one?

Though I do love still life photos, I feel that all I have been able to do for the past few weeks is shoot still life photos. New Jersey seems to have been covered with drizzle for weeks! Where is the sun?

This is particularly annoying because my new film camera arrived from Japan on Tuesday and I want to go out and shoot photos in other-than-overcast conditions.

I created the photography tips thread in part as a place to solicit feedback on photos. However, asking Dopers for feedback on a potential contest submission sort of feels like cheating to me. How does everyone else feel. Do you think it’s ok to ask for feedback before submitting a photo to the contest?

Well, google photos just sprung a new one on me. I’m used to it cutting the top and bottom off an image, but this time it cut the left and right ends off. Tricksy. Click on the image for the full photo.

From friends and family, obviously; from people who are likely to vote in the contest - no.

ETA - The photo is cropped, so I made a different crop which I also posted - this displays reasonably well without having to click for the full original image.

ETA 2 - If anyone is interested, the fruit bowl was turned by my father.

No, but I’d like to see critiques after we vote and the winner has been determined. That would be informative.

After being offline in the land of no cell service for 4 days we got into the hotel Mon night to find a power outage - no wifi (& still no cell service). I was going to submit an outdoor still life. Oh well, there’s always next month’s contest.

Thanks , Mr. Mustard for starting the new competition
