I already showed off this one, which is probably my favorite of my night photos:
I agree, it’s incredible!
Aw man, I am planning on visiting Los Angeles next month, and while I’m there I plan to go up to the Griffith Observatory at night and try to get a photo of the city from above. Like do a long exposure and try to capture some light trails or something like that. I even acquired a tripod and remote shutter for that purpose. But that’s gonna be too late for this contest.
Oooh, one of my specialties; the tough part will be choosing just one.
What do you all think about the following?

Regarding resubmitting photos, I asked about that a while back, particularly the case where someone submits a photo for theme A, but that photo also would work for subsequent theme B or C or Q or whatever (e.g. my submission for “outdoors” also would have been a good entry for “trees”). @TwoCarrotSnowman’s ruling was that there’s nothing in the rules against it, therefore it’s allowed.
Regarding suggesting themes, I assume the winner still would get final say in selecting the next theme, and the suggestions from others are just that, suggestions.
Yes, suggestions are suggestions.
mmm
I voted “no” for repeating themes after a year. I think at least two years would be better. It’s been 18 months and there are still new themes to explore. When I was deciding on this month’s theme, I was also considering “moonlight”, “weather”, “accidental weirdness” and “motion”. I think we are creative enough to not repeat ourselves so quickly.
I don’t have a problem with resubmissions that fit more than one theme.
As far as everyone making suggestions, sure, they could post them in this thread as they come up with them and the winner can take them into consideration. Heh, I just made some in the first paragraph.
Combining @aurora_maire’s topic suggestions with some of my own (it would be a good idea to copy/paste this list when adding to it to maintain a running list of suggestions):
Accidental Weirdness
Action
Black and White
Color
Moonlight
Unexpected
Weather
Vintage
(perhaps we can go two years before repeating themes)
mmm
If we’ve started taking suggestions, some ideas I had:
- Industry
- Architecture
- Childhood (I initially thought “children”, but we don’t all have our own children to photograph, and having to get permission to post other people’s children might be problematic)
Theme suggestions:
Repetition
Beauty
Spooky (or some other mood)
Man-made object
Color (a single color specified, not all colors)
Holiday/season or create a wall calendar page for a specified month
Old/new
There should be no need to repeat themes unless we all somehow have very very poor imaginations - however some broad themes like winter might make sense to repeat.
Here are some of my suggestions:
less is more
jump!
operate
backlit
cinematography (pictures that look like they are from a movie)
snapping the snapper
How about some things that can be interpreted different ways – I’m thinking like the “On the Edge” non-SD photography contest referred to upthread.
Out of time.
Invisible

I’m thinking that a doper baby picture contest would be fun. Everyone post childhood pictures of themselves and then vote on the cutest doper from childhood.
Some photoshop would be allowed since some of these pictures would be very, very old tintypes.
I agree it would be fun, but I think that is a different thread. It doesn’t really fit into the spirit of the Monthly Photo Competition.
mmm
Seems OK, a lot of our photos are archived.
My topic suggestion:
Title, photo and one paragraph story
After all, if it’s a photo of you as a baby… you probably didn’t take it!
Nighttime is my favorite time for photography.
I have loads of Milky Way photos, but I thought that they were not really the best example of “Night.”
Here’s a couple that didn’t make the cut for this month’s challenge:
Monument Valley by Moonlight:
That last one: wow!
Is it a compilation? It looks like there are star trails in the reflection off the lake. (In the UK we’d call that a sea, never mind a pond)
