SDMB Monthly Photo Competition - rolling discussion thread

Not my photo, but this is where my mind immediately went:

Agreed and judging by the entries so far, gritty seems to be earthy with a somber component. B&W fits this topic well.

I know where my mind went immediately. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pics of what I want to do & not sure if I can get them in time. What’s worse is I have I know someone who has hundreds if not thousands of pics of what I want; some really great ones too, but he took them & I didn’t.
I’m hoping I will get a chance to shoot it (but doubtful) so I’m not saying what it is just yet.

@minor7flat5 - Gritty Kitty!

Ilford HP5 Plus is pretty darned gritty stuff!

I developed my graffiti cat photo in HC-110 in order to dial the grain back a notch, but it still is pleasantly gritty. The only other option on my chemical shelf is a bottle of Rodinal, which renders that film stock with absolutely in-your-face grain.

You reminded me of when my dad served on the USS Kitty Hawk when he was in the Navy Reserve. He told me the nick name they used for their ship and it certainly wasn’t the Gritty Kitty…I’ll leave it to your imagination.

One reason I picked my particular submission is because it has that figurative grit, and also literal grit in the form of piles of dirt and gravel in the street (I think they were going some sort of curb replacement).

Interesting contrast to the TV antennas.

Reminder: Submission deadline is Wednesday, March 26, 11:45 pm US EDT.

Number of entries are down so far this month.

What I wanted to do was post a photo of Gritty.

I know the guy who shoots Gritty’s calendar; you realize how many awesome pictures he has of Gritty over the past couple of years? No, I wouldn’t even think of posting someone else’s work

I chose my photo of the funky free book exchange I stumbled across in a working class neighborhood of Fernandina Beach for its gritty symbolism. It’s rough construction using reclaimed materials holding an assortment of interesting book titles exemplifies a tough and courageous resolve that appeared at odds for it’s location I call that grit.

It’s funny… While I do think of that as the meaning of “grit” (a concept which also comes up a lot in education circles), I don’t think of “gritty” as meaning “having grit”. For some reason, while “grit” has a strong positive connotation for me, “gritty” is mostly negative. And it’s “gritty” that’s this month’s theme.

I disagree, grit and gritty are synonymous

Yeah, I actually looked up various definitions of gritty, and then chose a photo based on some of those elements. And I didn’t even try to shoot a new picture, because I felt like an urban setting was important and I’m all rural this month. :slightly_smiling_face:

We’re looking for a photo with True Grit…

March poll is open.

OK, I had a great example of what I’m talking about today. I was doing some bicycle maintenance, taking some parts apart to clean and lubricate them. But one part in particular desperately needed that cleaning: It took me over an hour to manage to take it apart.

I showed grit in persevering until I had fixed it. The bike was gritty.

EDIT: Oh, and I dealt with the ambiguity of meaning by voting for pictures that seemed to fit more than one definition of “gritty” at once.

I’m hoping the next subject is omens🐦‍⬛

Congratulations to @Turek for their gritty March win.

Since last month was “gritty,”, I suggest “Smooth”, or, since it’s spring in North America, “Green”.

Both sound good, but you gotta pick one.
