SDMB Monthly Photo Competition - rolling discussion thread

Our winner well deserves the win!

Don’t know about others, but the thing that got me for that photo was the reflections in the drops - just made the whole photo. Really grabbed right away, a beautiful picture!

I missed the deadline this month, but I knew what photo would win as soon as I saw it. Great photo.

Full disclosure: My post, “Uncharted Currents” is a photograph of a cool painting of my wife’s. She has a technique that involves special fluid and a small torch to create these scenes. These days it’s tough to find color in my black-and-white portfolio!

Wow! I love your wife’s painting!

I was going to do a field of tulips, but I figure a lot of people will do flowers, so I went with fabrics instead.

Another month in which everything kicks ass!

Full credit for my image - this is from MeowWolf in Grapevine, TX (part of the Dallas/Ft Worth megaplex), I only took the picture, I am not responsible for the colors, effort, and artistic vision that it took to create the work itself.

Question-- can we re-enter non-winning pics in future contests? I have a pic I was thinking of using in the ‘Colors’ contest, but it probably wouldn’t win in ‘Colors’. It might be a better fit for another theme down the road. If there’s a ‘one pic per contest’ rule I’ll probably hang on to this particular pic.

AFAIK, there’s no rule against it.

Thanks. I think on general principle though, it’s best to hang onto it for a possible better theme. I think if the same pic showed up in different competitions Dopers would think ‘that picture again?’ and it would be less likely to win than if it was presented for the first time.

I’m part of a photo club that has an annual contest. A given photo can be submitted year after year (in the same or different categories) as long as it didn’t place previously.

You absolutely can enter a previously entered picture if it did not already win. I’m pretty certain we discussed this several months ago.

mmm

ETA: Found it:

Thanks for the confirmation!

(I’m glad I don’t see my avatar among those who voted back then)

And I am glad that I did not forget to elaborate.
The lazy way: by quoting someone who did elaborate that yes, it should be allowed, but only if the picture had not won. So the yes camp is an even bigger majority than it seems at first glance.

I had several pictures of Lake of the Clouds (Porcupine Mts State Park in Michigan’s UP), but they do not do justice of how colorful the leaves were. I settled on a closeup of the lake’s outlet which better shows the colors.

Brian

I voted no, and I really don’t remember why, it seems entirely reasonable to me to allow it now.

Ehhhh, I just had to delete my entry for this month’s comp as Google photos managed to crop the hell out of it. I’ll try to sort that out when I get to my desktop in a few days. Sorry if this caused you hassle, mmm.

Google photos will always crop the pic for the in-thread view. I think we’ve all learned by now to click through to see the whole thing.

If you have a Bluesky account, you can post the photo there. After posting, click on the image to open it fully, right-click to get the menu with “open image in new tab”, click on that, copy the new tab link, and paste the link in here – and your photo will be fully reproduced. Here’s an image I put up there yesterday, one of four in that post.

ETA: If you just copy the URL for the page with the opened image before doing the “new tab” step you just get the account per se.
