Great stuff! Loved the one you posted earlier and this one, too. And from a kayak, no less!
Can people in the UK get to imgur by using a VPN like NordVPN or SurfShark and connecting to a server in a different country?
This particular instance seems to be a reaction to a possible fine going to be impressed under laws already in place, rather than the OSA, and the regulator had made it clear that blocking the UK now won’t stop it imposing fines for historic offences, switch hire it intends to claim the money from a company that no longer has business interests in the UK isn’t clear.
This really isn’t the thread for discussing the reasons, though.
Can we get an official ruling from @Mean_Mr.Mustard on the imgur issue? Should we repost our entries to a different host to allow UKers to see and participate? Can we get a suggestion from said UKers about which image host(s) are still viable for them?
I’ve heard good things about imgbb, although I haven’t got time to test it right now. There’s a sub for the pro service, but I think an image a month for this purpose shouldn’t be an issue.
I certainly do not want to shut out our UK members.
@Teuton says the only image they can see is the submission of @EddyTeddyFreddy. What hosting site did you use, @EddyTeddyFreddy?
Feel free to re-post your October submission using something other than Imgur, but I would ask that you first request mods to remove your Imgur post from the thread so as to not complicate voting.
Going forward, I will include a note on Imgur issues in the contest rules.
If anyone has suggestions for hosting sites in addition to @Teuton’s mention of imgbb, that would be helpful.
mmm
I just uploaded a test image (unrelated to the contest) to imgbb. The process was very easy. Can everyone see this?
Testing ImgBB:
ETA: OK, how do I remove the extraneous nonsense from my post?
mmm
As I mentioned in a post above, if you have a Bluesky account, you can host there. Do a post and upload your image to it. Then click into the post and left-click on the image. It will open in a new window. Do NOT use this URL. Instead, right-click on the image and from the resultant menu pick open image in a new tab. Then copy that URL to paste into your post here.
Right click (or on mobile, long press) and choose “open image in new tab” or the closest equivalent. This gives you the direct link to the image without the page wrapper. Then copy and paste the URL.
I see @Pardel-Lux tried posting a wonderful image in the contest thread but it didn’t work as hoped. Until people have a better solution, I would be happy to host other contestants’ images on my Bluesky page, with of course full attribution both there and in the contest thread, so we can get the image directly. (Even if I get beaten by someone I host.)
ETA: Once I’ve posted the image at Bluesky, the owner can try doing the left click, right click maneuver and see if they get a URL that will work directly for them here.
The image-dot-jpg embed works only if it’s totally alone on its own line. Like this:
Text, text, text, text.
http-blah-blah-image.jpg
More text, text, text.
I would encourage @Pardel-Lux to try again (here in this thread) and ensure the format is correct. That’s how I posted my test image above, and Mustard’s followup.
Nope, somehow it does not work the way I do it, not even when it is totally alone in its own line post. Well, people can click on it, others do it all the time.
Ah, that’s it! Yes, I see in the preview that it works. Not going to upload it again, but hey, sometimes Discourse has arcane rules to post pictures or YouTube videos. Why the rules differ for Imgur and for this other site probably has a reason. I am going to guess it is a stupid reason
Since it’s still early in the month, I propose that the existing thread be locked and restarted with images re-homed, rather than ask the mods to edit the various posts individually.
Seconded, and I suggest putting a link in the locked thread leading to the new thread for ease of use.
Sorry to be dense.
This is what I’ve tried:
- Open ImgBB site in new tab
- Click on START UPLOADING
- Select desired image from my files, click OPEN
- Back to ImgBB site, click UPLOAD
- At this point I see UPLOAD COMPLETE, a thumbnail of my image, “Viewer Links”, and the url.
At what point am I right-clicking?
Thanks for your help,
mmm
