SDMB operation question.

This is real stupid but so ar, I haven’t figured out how to add those little smilies to any post of mine, and more importently, if I want to link to a web page or another thread I can’t figure out how to do that. Can anyone help?

Thanks Dan

Click on the **FAQ ** section at the top of the page and then look at the “Reading and Posting Messages” section. There’s a lot of information there.

Got a question about the operation of the board? Open your thread in “About This Message Board.”

Which is where I’ve moved your thread.

You can access some tools if you use the “Reply” button as opposed to “Quick Reply”. Alternatively, you can use "Go Advanced, which shows up just below the Quick Reply box.

The smilies will appear in a panel to the right of the post box. Just above the post box, there is an icon that shows a globe with a chain in front of it. You can use that for linking. There are a couple of options:

You can type out the text that you want to appear as the text for the link, (such as “Click here for cite”), highlight it, and then click on the icon I just mentioned. A menu will appear with your highlighted text in a field. Hit OK, and in the next field, type in the URL that you want to link to. However, I can’t seem to get this option to work in Firefox or Opera.

Alternatively, you can just click that icon, type in the text for the link in the first field, hit ok, and then type in the URL for the second field.

Oh and some more things on linking (and apologies if I’m stating stuff you already know):

If you want to link to a website (or a thread, etc.) you can open the site in another window, and copy the information in the address bar at the top of the screen. Then you can just paste it into the thread. If you leave it “raw”, by default it will be turned into a link. This removes the need to do any of the above mentioned icon-clicking.

If you want to link to a specific post on this board:

In the upper right hand corner of each post is a number identifying it (this post of mine will be number 5). Clicking on that number will open the post in its own page, without any of the other posts surrounding it. You can then use the URL for that page to link to if you don’t wish to include the rest of the thread (though I find this a little frustrating because I almost always want to see the context of the thread). And just as an added FYI, anyone opening that single post can link back to the main thread by clicking on the thread title that will appear in the upper right hand corner of the post.

I know very little so sincere thanks. I appreciate your mention of Firefox since I often use it. I’ve had some other things that didn’t quite work in it.

Instead of clicking on the link and displaying the post as TellMeI’mNotCrazy described, you can right-click on it and select “copy link location” (in Firefox; in IE, “copy shortcut”). Then just paste the link wherever desired. This avoids some board accesses and the wait for displaying the post.

To make a link that displays the post in context:

  1. get the post number by copying as above (or doing the same over the post’s “reply” button) or hovering over one of them and writing down the post number.

  2. code the following: [****post=######]post description[/post] where ###### is the post number from the previous step.

This [****post=6161772]Cunctator’s post in this thread[/post]

produces this: [post=6161772]Cunctator’s post in this thread[/post]

This and many other tags can be found by doing what Cunctator described and going to “Are there any special codes/tags I can use to markup my posts?”

Finally, the meta-tip: if you see somebody using interesting coding, click on the “reply” button of that post to see how they did it.
