Help....how do I link previous threads for reference?

I’m new to this and virtually ignorant about how to post. I bow to your superiority on the SDMB…

If I want to post a link from an old thread or reference it somehow how do I do that without clogging up things or pissing somebody off enough to have me flamed in the pit?

Thanks!
 Hey!!! I just learned how to use a smiley.

See the text thing that indicates the site your on? Highlight it, and copy it. Above your post is a http://, click on it. Type in the words you wish to use(like “Link to old thread”), click ok. Then paste te link into the second window, and press ok.

Ok…now I just feel plain stupid…

:smack:

First off: Welcome to the SDMB! Very pleased to meet you, and offer you Imaginary Welcome Cookies of Joy, which contain actual lemon-scented Joy dishwashing detergent. EnJOY! Ah, I’m funny.
Second off: You can link any old thing you want just by typing in the url thusly:

http://www.thisisafakelink.com

(If you want that link to be another SDMB thread, just copy and paste the location from your browser window)

OR, if you’re extra creative, you can embed the link in your text. I’m not sure how to explain the coding without making it disappear, but there’s a link at the bottom of this page that explains vB code, or you can click the “quote” button under my post to see how I made this link.

(Note: both my links are imaginary, but real ones work the same way.

Hope that made sense, and welcome once again!

Aries28, welcome to the SDMB. Hope your stay is long and fruitful.

This question should most properly be posed in the About This Message Board forum. I’m confident a mod will move it soon.

But, to further address your question: For All Features Great And Small / All Things Bright And Beautiful, check out Arnold Winkelried’s threads in ATMB: FAQ - technical issues and FAQ - Guidelines for posting at the SDMB.

Aslan2 and Kn*ckers pretty much covered your question. If you would want to link directly to a specific post in a thread (though most people don’t do this because it’s more complicated), you can construct the link by modifying appropriately the following (replacing NNN with the postid):
[url=http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?postid=NNN#postNNN]post link description in your words&#91/url]

You can get the post number (inserted after both “postid” and “#post”) by holding your mouse over the quote button at the bottom of that post; it will be at the end of the URL displayed in the status bar at the bottom of your browser. Or, you can press the quote button, and a new reply window will open. The URL for that reply window should show in the URL field at the top of your browser window, and the URL contains the postid for the post.
Example:
…postid=1684541#post1684541

Well, this has been adquately answered. However, in the interests of anal-retentive housekeeping, I’m gonna move it over to ATMB.

oh boy oh boy i can’t wait to see the link oh boy oh boy oh boy
