SDMB problem in OS 10.9.4

I’m running OS 10.9.4 on a MacBook Pro and using Safari 7.0.5. I keep timing out when I try to access SDMB. When the Forums page does load, I time out when I click on a forum.

I’m working remotely today, so I opened SDMB in Explorer on my work computer (which is accessed through RDC on my Mac). SDMB opened right up, and I was able to get into a forum. It did get very slow once, but SDMB has been balky for a couple of months. I’m posting from my office PC.

I cleared cookies in Safari, shut and restarted Safari, and it’s still timing out. Firefox on the Mac is also timing out. This indicates that either the problem is with the SDMB server, or with my Mac… if Explorer on the PC loads this post.

Any thoughts?

And… It took forever to post this in Explorer. I’m thinking it’s an SDMB server problem.

I’m having trouble too.

I’m also having trouble getting to my webmail on the Mac. I can get to it quickly on the office computer.
ETA: This post loaded normally using the office computer.

.

Safari?
Try turning on the “Develop” menu. and then clearing the caches.

No joy.

SDMB and webmail (and earthlink dot net) are still loading slow or not at all.

The SDMB was a bit wonky for me earlier but it has cleared up now. Are you still having issues?

The fact that the SDMB seems to be working ok now (for me at least) combined with earthlink also being slow makes me think that this is more of a networking issue and not a board issue, so I’m going to leave this in GQ for now instead of moving it to ATMB. If other people are having issues accessing the SDMB let me know and I’ll reconsider moving this thread.

ETA: I’m not seeing any reports of internet outages or slowdowns elsewhere, yet.

I wondered if it could be a Comcast issue. I am connected to my office PC via RDC, and I can access SDMB and webmail this way. No slow-downs. Other sites I visit do not appear to be affected on the Mac.

Possibilities:
[ul][li]SDMB and earthlink webmail servers are having problems[/li][li]Comcast Internet is having problems[/li][li]Something is wrong with my MacBook[/li][li]Something else[/ul][/li]Since SDMB and webmail are working normally when accessed from my office PC, and since you have not heard of any slow-downs, I’m guessing the servers are functioning normally.

Since I am able to connect to my office PC and do my work and navigate, I’m guessing Comcast Internet is functioning normally.

That leaves my MacBook or something else.

I fired up the old PowerBook G4 running OS 10.5.8 and Safari 5.0.6, and I’m having the same issue on that machine.

You might try doing a traceroute on the machines that work ok vs. the ones that don’t to see if the ones that don’t are having problems with a particularly slow link or something like that.

Note - macs and unix machines use the command “traceroute” where windows machines use “tracert”.

I’ve had a couple of slow SDMB accesses since the last post but most accesses haven’t had any delays or problems.

I assume that’s done through the Command line? What will it show me, and how do I read it??

I just found this:

Not something I want to try while I’m working, and I’m not sure about ‘changing back’ if something goes wrong.

Traceroute basically shows you each hop that the packets make to get from your computer to the destination, along with the time associated with each hop. If you run it a few times and one of the hops has a particularly large time difference associated with it, then that’s the hop where the slowdown is occurring.

This site may be helpful:

ETA: If it’s a DNS issue, the delay may be at the beginning of the trace before it starts hopping and may not show up in the numbers, but you’ll see it lag before it starts doing its thing.

I went to Google public DNS and added 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to the existing one and that didn’t help.

I’m using OS X 10.9.5 and Safari 7.1 with no issues. Are you using a VPN or proxy?

Open a terminal window and try this:

dscacheutil -flushcache

Also reboot your computer if you haven’t already.

Don’t add them to the existing one - if your old DNS servers are timing out you’ll still have problems. Replace the old ones entirely.

Success!

Thanks!

Does anyone in this thread have a Belkin router? Huge, mysterious outage today.
