SDMB Short Fiction Contest, Late 2012/Early 2013 edition - Logistics Thread

Hello and welcome, everyone. We’ve had ten Short Fiction contests so far, in May 2010, September 2010, over the holidays between 2010 and 2011, February 2011, April 2011, June 2011, September 2011, late 2011/early 2012, May 2012 and October 2012. They’ve been such fun that I’d like to do one last one for this year.
I’d like to congratulate our past winners once again -

The Hamster King, May 2010, for Quarrantine
Spoons, September 2010 for Homeward By Polaris
Spoons, Holiday Edition 2010 for He Knows a Lot of People
Justin Credible, February 2011 for Happy Valentine’s Day, Sweetheart!
MsWhatsit, April 2011 for The Brickites
Savannah, June 2011 for The Summer Place
jackdavinci, September 2011 for T-shirt Junction
cmyk, late 2011/early 2012 for Time and Time Again
DMark, May 2012 for The End
The Mighty Boosh, October 2012 for Spiral.

So, I’d like to suggest the following - the contest will run from 9 AM EDT, Thursday, December 27th, 2012 until 11:59 PM EDT, Monday, January 7th, 2013. That’s an extra-long period of 12 days which covers two weekends. Any writers interested in participating somewhere within that time can send an e-mail to sdmbpoetrysweatshop at gmail dot com - the required photo and the obligatory three words will be in an out-of-office auto-reply. The writer will then have 60 (sixty) hours from the time and date of that auto-reply to submit a story of no more than 2,000 words.

The story can be any style or genre, but it must centre around the 3 randomly selected words and one randomly selected photograph. (These requirements are partly to ensure no one dusts off a story they’ve been working on for months, and partly because it’s really interesting to compare what different writers do with the same source material.) No specific theme this time - let your imaginations run free.

Sorry, but the contest is open only to Dopers - Guests, Mods, Administrators, Members, Charter Members, Goats, Squids, people with funny titles - but contestants must have the right to post here.

I will start an Anthology Thread of all the stories I’ve received around 60 hours before the close of the contest. At 11:59 PM EDT, Monday, January 7th, 2013, entries will be closed and I will establish a multiple-choice poll in the Anthology Thread. A week later, the poll will close and we will declare a winner.

A couple of editorial/logistics points to bring up. I will be doing some very minor editing - just for appearance on the computer screen, I will ensure that there are double returns between paragraphs. I would also strongly prefer that all the stories have a title, and if they don’t come with a title, I’ll refer to them as Untitled (First few words of the opening sentence.) If you use special text (italics in particular, but also bold face and underline.), please mention it in the return e-mail - the codes don’t always come through properly in gmail and I do try to respect writers’ conventions. Sometimes this means doing a search word by word to make sure the codes get written correctly.

Also for legibility and appearance, I would like to post the first ~ hundred words or first (few) paragraph(s), whichever is most coherent, in the open reply. Then, I will put the rest of the story in a spoiler box. Then I’ll have another spoiler box with the author’s name. The reasoning here is to avoid the Gigantic Wall of Text effect. I’m open to other people’s suggestions here, though I thought this worked very well the last few times.

I quite like the multiple choice polls and I would like to keep that as a feature of the Short Fiction contests. Placing the writers’ names in spoiler boxes also seems to be a good compromise between giving credit where it is due and keeping the voting based on the merits of the individual stories, to the extent that is possible.

I think that’s everything - I’m hoping many of you will be interested in giving it a go sometime in the next few days.

Best wishes,

Le Ministre de l’au-delà

Thanks! Looking forward to it.
Had made no plans - considering the Mayan prophesy and all - so now I should have ample time to write.

Oh yeah, I have a long weekend over New Year’s, this will be the perfect time to write.

So soon? Man, I was not feeling up to it after the drubbing I got last time…
Nah, still a glutton for punishment, this time I have to learn to keep it short and I still welcome the [del]flogging[/del] criticism as I want to get better at this.

I’ve been away from this place for so long – I felt a little pang of regret on logging back in in the last few days and seeing a whole bunch of unread messages about the previous installments of the contest that I’d missed. I’m totally in on this one!

woohoo!

All right; my internet use is about to get sporadic for a few days. If any problems arise (and I don’t anticipate any, other than going off line seems to be a sure-fire way to tempt fate…), I’ll deal with them on Wednesday.

Peace, love and happiness to all of you until then.

It has been entirely too long since I made time to write. I shall try.

I’ll give it a shot. Over a couple of weekends is always good.

The auto-reply is up and running. Now to do some writing in with all the other running around…

Thanks! Got it.
Already have about 1,600 words completed - and have put it aside for a bit to mull over what still needs to be written and what can be edited out.

Certainly an interesting photo.

Hmmm - I’ve been hoping we’d see another poetry contest first, but I am feeling a bit creative and have a weekend off for once with no obligations that I know of…

I may just give this a shot!

Update - mine is completed, but hedging my bets and taking one last stab at editing tomorrow before submitting it.

The photo sent me off on a tangent and took me places I never expected to go. Let’s see if I let it be tomorrow.

Wow the photo is awfully…specific lol.

I submitted my story to you - let me know if you got it or have problems opening it or whatever.

I left it pretty much as it was yesterday - few minor tweaks. The photo plays a main part of the story…so we’ll see if it works.

Thanks again for organizing and doing this Le Ministre de l’au-delà!

I’ve got it - I won’t try opening it until sometime later tonight or early tomorrow. I haven’t even started mine, and I don’t want to be influenced by other people’s ideas - not even if my own ideas are utter crap!

Submitted! Ran into that 2000 word limit really quickly and had to gloss over a huge chunk of story. But still it was fun, and probably the most I’ve catered to the picture in my stories.

I am in, starting tomorrow. Life got in the way after the last one, and I never properly thanked everyone who participated, read, and voted. So, here is a THANK YOU to all the writers, readers and voters–and Le Ministre de l’au-delà, of course!

Now. Just have to find a plot around here somewhere.

To catch up, and to reassure those who have already sent in stories - I’ve got submissions from

Everyone’s submissions so far have come through just fine. (Mine is utter crap, but that’s another issue altogether.)

I’ll be writing tomorrow!
