This thread was inspired by a recent thread about people’s favorite music. Several people stated that they hated Techno/dance music. Now, don’t get me wrong, There’s nothing wrong with hating dance music, it’s not for everyone. What irritated me though, was people saying they hated techno. It’s not that I think everyone should love it, but if you already hate dance music, chances are you have never heard any actual techno before. Here’s a hint, Moby, the chemical brothers, and Fatboy slim are NOT techno. I don’t blame the people who say it though, it’s the media’s fault for mislabeling anything electronic as techno back when it was hailed as “the next big thing”(thank god that’s over). So, my fellow dopers, who else is a fan of techno, house, drum n bass and even (shudder) trance? Was anyone else a raver back in the day(or even now)? I’m simply searching for kindred souls who love this horribly misunderstood genre.
…I never half-step cause I’m not a half-stepper…
I like some stuff that can be called techno/dance in a pinch and by a long shot. Depeche Mode, Portishead, Cabaret Voltaire and Kraftwerk. But I think the labels prefer the terms ‘synthpop’, ‘triphop’ and ‘electronic’ for them, respectively.
I think I’m a fan, but I can never keep the labels straight. Drum-n-bass, darkstep, big band…WTF?
I’ve got a couple of Ninja Tune compilations – love them. Thievery Corporation, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Autechre, Amon Tobin, Goldie – I like all that. I also like stuff like Squarepusher’s “Burning 'N Tree” – really obnoxious, tuneless, what-the-hell-is-this “music.” I listen to that when I have to clean my kitchen.
But there’s some other stuff (the only example I can think of is the Idjit Boys, which my Greek friend made me listen to…I don’t know how well-known they are) I can’t stand. The beats are booorrrring. Just bum-bum-bum…no variation. No tune. Nothing interesting going on. I guess you could dance to it (I guess), but I would never ever listen to it for its own sake. Ugh.
