Oops, that’s an ugly and unwieldy post.

Anyway, we’ve made it to the All-Star break and, in the SDMB Keeper, Montfort’s Stockholm Sluggers are looking strong. The team seems to have a big question mark at in 2B in Bo Hart, but a closer look shows Frank Catalanotto on the bench. The pitching is very strong with Wolf, Williams, Prior, Beckett and Padilla in the rotation, and Foulke, Percival, Mantei and Cordero as closers. Going to be a tough team to catch unless freak injuries decimate his roster – always a possibility with Sosa, Juan Gone and Beltran in the OF, and Mantei’s a walking insurance claim. Yep, it could be that the best the rest of us can hope for is that Woody’s historic fragility appears in the second half and that Baker blows out Prior’s arm.

On the other hand, the Schrodinger’s Bat pitching staff is finally starting to come around – if Schilling, Vazquez, Clement and Garcia all have a strong second half, there is clump of teams teams just ahead of me in wins I could blow by for a gain of 6 -10 points in the category, thereby putting the team within reasonable striking distance of Montfort.

If cmkeller’s Accidental Tourists can pull off a deal or two for SB and RBI, both the Sluggers and the Bat could be in trouble.

In the Melting Pot, The Sleepers seem to be coasting but both White Lightning’s Theocracy and erislover’s Chaosophers have made me a little nervous in the past week. erl’s team looks like the stronger of the two – with just the right hitting tweaks (HR and RBI probably), he could make a serious run.

Meanwhile, over in the SDMB_1, I feel very comfortable with the position of Rickey’s Residue, although my continued carelessness about fielding percentage may yet pull me off my perch. A 2 in any category is dangerous, as it means that even in slight drop in the others will pull the team back to the pack.

Again, WL is biting at my heels, and I expect his Blue Sox to challenge in the second half. But Wilson’s E. Wilson All-Stars and Munch’s Shelbyvillians are at least as dangerous as WL’s team. I think Wilson has the best chance of overtaking. For instance, he still has Vladdy coming back and the right trade could move through the tight grouping ahead of him in SB for a gain of at least 7 points in that category. He could also quickly gain at least 5 in HR.

All that said, anything at all can happen. I’ve seen it begin already in 16 team league I’m in – two weeks a particular team was in 12th place with 68 or 70 points. This morning that team sits in 6th place with 93 points. And that’s with a 1 in wins. Anything can happen.

I think you’re a little more optimistic about my team’s chances than I am, FF… I’m sure I’ll hang in the upper division but I don’t think I’ll catch you. Although I might still pick up a few more points in HR and SB, I’m feeling really nervous in the saves category. Rocky Biddle and Mike Williams just don’t inspire confidence…
Plus, my trading you Frank Thomas means you will wind probably wind up catching me in OBP, where I used to have a huge lead… oh well.

I agree, Wilson, that Mike Williams probably won’t help you catch me. Perhaps you could move him? Weirddave is looking for a closer. Yeah, getting Thomas from you has worked out well for me.

I’ve just taken another quick look at the SDMB_1 rosters, and I’m thinking that Petey’s Isotopes may just throw a scare into all of us in the second half.

The stretch run in Melting Pot is shaping up to be awfully interesting. Since I never tire of talking or thinking about myself, the first thing on my mind is the 4 trades I’ve made in the last 2 weeks. Which one has the most potential to become the successor to the one where I traded the AL’s ASG starter and another fringe starter for an NL player and the worst starting LF in the AL?

[ul][li]Danys Baez to Winnowill for Derek Lowe[/li][li]Scott Hatteberg to Odieman for Alex Sanchez[/li][li]Billy Mueller to deb for Bartolo Colon[/li][li]Rodrigo Lopez and Eric Byrnes to the Fewl himself for Jeremy Affeldt and Frank Thomas[/ul][/li]
My strategy was to try to shore up my rotation (and start trying to catch up to my IP allotment) without damaging my terrific offensive production (2nd place or better in 5 categories, 3rd in OBP, and dead last in SB as of this writing), and secondarily to try to steal some damn bases. For one day last week I had 1.5 points in SBs but other than that I’ve been mired in the basement there for months. It’s going to be hard to make much leeway there, I have 38 and the four teams above me have 39, 45, 48 and 52, but I’m way ahead in R and 2B and very safe in RBI and AVG, so any progress I can make should help. I’m right in the middle of the pack in all the pitching categories, except for saves which I lead and wins in which, again, I am dead last, mostly due to the fact that I have pitched fewer innings than every team but the Portland Expos and the Saskatoon Locusts who don’t actually play.

The emergence of Kim as Boston’s closer allowed me the flexibility to deal Baez or Mike MacD, and I hoped to be able to deal from strength at the corners (Hatterberg, Huff, Blake, Mueller, Chavez) as well.

So that’s the rationale behind those moves. Hoping Kim and Mike MacD will maintain my saves pace, I moved Baez for a guy who could be a top-10 starter in the second half. Add to this that I think I know the Secret Sauce formula for success with Derek Lowe, and the fact that the improving pen should result in more of his leads being kept, my first move was a gamble but a calculated one. I do think this trade has the best chance of the group to backfire on me. Baez wasn’t spectacular, but he produced saves and gave me good innings. Lowe can be very inconsistent and pitched a lot of innings last season after being used exclusively out of the pen for a few years, so has some potential to break down in the coming weeks. I give myself a C+ on this trade, marked down because Winnowill is the one who is still enjoying Loaiza’s success so coming out behind in another trade with her makes me look even worse.

A minor trade that I liked was Hatteberg for Sanchez. This has a high potentiality to blow up in both our faces – both players have been pretty inconsistent lately, and since neither are stars to begin with, ‘inconsistency’ on their part amounts to just about zero productivity. Playing a hunch, I had had Hatteberg benched for some time. Overall he provides some minor run production and steadies my OBP. I figured Sanchez couldn’t do much worse, and since there’s nothing stopping him from stealing bases in Detroit even at a sub-70% success rate, he might be a good addon. Odie’s on top in steals and behind in most run-producing categories so Hatty might be beneficial there. I give myself an even B for this one because though it’s a nice trade, it’s probably low-impact.

I don’t remember the genesis of the next trade but I’m looking forward to seeing its results. I’m reluctant to let go of my incredibly consistent (and handsome) non-drafted roster invitee Billy Mueller, but adding Colon to my staff is a HUGE improvement and between him and Lowe will provide a total revamp of my roster. I can spare Mueller with Blake and Chavez to split time at 3B, although it hurts my 1B and OF options a little because when I could choose from Mueller/Chavvy at third I could move Blake to 1B and have Huff play OF. Deb was smart to get a 3B with Glaus going on the DL, and Mueller is a proven run producer and a wonderful teammate. Anyway I give myself an A- for this trade because it’s going to help me a lot but I’m sad to let Mueller go.

And lastly we have the trade that guarantees that Rodrigo Lopez will make the biggest turnaround in the second half this season. I had to hang on to him all year because he was my second-best (GULP) starting pitcher, but with the addition of Lowe and Colon he wasn’t as crucial. Thomas should restore my flexibility on offense as well as provide a nice boost to OBP, and I wanted to unload Byrnes to forestall the temptation to let him suck down my OBP as I started him every day trying to catch the day that he pulls out of his slump. Affeldt isn’t a sure bet but has the talent to help me out in the second half.

Overall, I gave up a B-level closer, a fringe 1B, a strong 3B, an upstart OF mired in a terrible slump, and a young pitcher with nothing but potential (and 15 wins last season) for two near-elite starters, a strong 1B, and an SB specialist. I’ll take it.

Well, I was planning to do some roster analysis of other teams in the league but this got way longer than I expected. Sorry. =/

WL you realize you only got Colon cause of the time of year, plus I got tired of him stinking it up lately, AND Glaus is in such a slump, I think he needs a step stool just to bat. I plan on starting my year-end youngster trials. You know I have nothing to lose, what, I will be in last place :slight_smile: I love picking up some kids fresh from AAA and taking him for a Fantasy test drive. It is one of the ways I keep up on the news kids coming up to the majors.

Well, as you know, I was DESPERATE for saves. Till I got Danny, I hadn’t had one since Kaz went down. With Loaiza and Sabathia anchoring the rotation, I could afford to lose a starter, especially one as inconsistent as Lowe’s been this year.

Well, I thought the trade helped us both. I thought you might feel that way about Colon, I made a few offers for him in other leagues to see if any other owners were frustrated with him at the moment as well. And with Glaus in the dumps as you say, it seemed like a good fit.

Winnowill, our trade was also a beautiful fit. I’m just having buyer’s remorse because Mike MacD is stinking lately, Kim’s not getting save opportunities, and Jorge Julio saved about 11 games last week so Fewl caught me there… and I’m extremely, extremely unconfident in D-Lowe.

The way my luck has gone in the Melting Pot league, I’m not in the least surprised that after trading Mark Mulder and Shannon Stewart to Fatwater Fewl for Manny Ramirez and Kenny Rogers, Mulder goes ahead and throws 7 shutout innings with 11 Ks. But wait you say - Manny hit a two-run home run yesterday!
Yeah, but I forgot it was a day game and didn’t get to a computer in time to activate Manny…

Seriously, I hate dealing with the guy in the lead, especially when I’m out of it like I am (6th out of 9). But I think I did OK by this trade. Mulder is definitely a top of the line starter, his one weakness being that he’s normally not a strikeout pitcher (yesterday nonwithstanding). Stewart is a spare part on my roster.
I’m desparate for runs, HR and RBIs, and a push in those categories could gain me a good 8-10 points. If my other pitchers hold up, Manny just might be enough to keep me moving up.
Plus I love me some fried chicken.

Fifth is probably the best I can hope to do - but hey, that’s worlds better then last, which is where I was as recently as June 22. Thank you Jason Giambi.

At least in this league I can’t possibly have Griffey… grumble grumble…

**Melting Pot

Oh, the trades, the trades. I’m very happy with the Manny and Rogers for Mulder and Stewart deal. It allowed me to take a chance on Lopez, though I definitely overpaid (but that’s okay, because Affeldt’s been sent to the bullpen because of blisters). I may regret the loss of power, but I felt I needed more pitching and I was sick of seeing Young, or Gibbons, or Cameron sitting on my bench.

I think erislover’s aptly named Chaosophers will have an impact on whether or not I’ll fall from my perch. His boys have been going to seed without his hand at the helm (what mixed metaphors?) for the past couple of weeks. I’m not complaining. I kind of like the the little bit of randomness it throws into movement in the standings.

Montfort’s Sluggers still looking to be running away here, though they have fallen back a bit over the past few days. It seems to me that my only hopes of catching him rests on whether Adam Dunn begins to hit for power again, and whether I can get some wins out of my pitchers down the stretch. If not, this league will remain a one-and- half-horse race.

Things are getting interesting here. Munch’s Shelbyvillains are making a real charge, having gained 12 points in the standings over the past week to move with in a half-point of my Residue. He’s making me afraid.

My big problem here is a 3 in wins. However, I’m hoping to make up ground there as, for some reason, I don’t quite understand it, Weirddave offered me Johann Santana and Roy Oswalt for Morgan Ensberg. He had someone, I forget who, coming off the DL and wanted to free up roster space. I jumped all over the deal.

Yes, Munch, I noticed that the day I got back on was the day you pulled ahead of me. Can you keep up the pace for another month and a half?

Gonna be tough. My hitters are all doing bang up work, but my pitching is a little weak. The Cordero gaff is killing me on saves, and my starters can’t seem to pick up wins if their lives depended on it. And my starters aren’t bad! Peavy pitched 9 shutout innings last week, but didn’t get a win out of it!

I think I can catch up to you in HRs, and my OBP and slugging have gone through the roof (I used to be 3 and 5 in those categories). Pujols doesn’t look like he’s ever going to slow down, Loretta was a brilliant pick-up, Lee has launched himself into the Top 50, Palmeiro is still going hard (sorry), and the rest of the cast and crew are steadily plugging along. Gotta thank your for the Rolen for Dunn trade at the beginning of the season. If Jeter could stop booting balls hit his way, I wouldn’t be in the bottom half of fielding.

Soriano has been a savior for my ERA and WHIP, and don’t forsee anymore problems there (dumping Freddy Garcia helps a tad as well). If I can just start picking up some wins, I think I can maintain what I have.

Regardless, my goal at the beginning of the season was to be in the top 5. Since I’d never done fantasy baseball before, I thought it a pretty lofty, but obtainable, goal. It’s been a lot of fun even if I lose the top spot.
