It has been a lot of fun. And you’re doing amazingly well for your first season. There is a possibility you’ll run away with the rest of the season. And I’d be happy to be in a league with you again next season, if the game still interests you.
Rolen for Dunn… yeah, I needed Dunn’s power stats then. I thought he’d keep it longer. But I don’t regret that trade at all.
Nor do I regret that I went into the draft determined to ignore fielding percentage – the reason for that being that I believe it to be as meaningless a reflection of a fielder’s skills as wins are for a pitcher (oddly enough, my team is weak in both categories).
Somewhat like you, I came into the season with a definite goal in mind – mine was to win, place or show in spite of FP. I still intend to win.
I agree on the fielding percentage. And looking back on it, it looks like the best way to dominate in that category is to start two catchers (one in C, one in UTIL). Starting a non-catcher at C, it hurts. So does Jeter…
I also wanted to say how nice it is to be in such a large league. It annoys me to no end going to espn.com and reading the advice columns. Today, someone asked if they should drop Shannon Stewart, and if picking up Carlos Lee from the waiver wire would be a good idea. Wha…? How in the hell are those players even being considered to not be on a roster?!? The only good advice on there is their daily advice for streaming pitchers - who to start from the pool of pitchers owned by less than 50% of the ESPN leagues. The correspondents are good as well (the Seattle guy and the Florida guy are professional-grade).
I see that, Omniscient. I’m hoping you and Munch will somehow trip each other up during the stretch run.
By the way, Munch, I agree with you about ESPN. There are slim pickings there for players in deep leagues. In fact, I’ve only found two sites to be of much value to me this season: rotoworld, and rotomojo (now merged with creativesports). I did fork out the fee for thesportingnews.com’s fantasy content for this season (with the number of leagues I’m in, I figured what the hell …). Wasn’t worth it.
I am half-considering starting a fantasy baseball blog – player analysis, rankings, draft and inseason strategies and tactics, commentary, etc – if you or White Lightning or anyone else is iinterested in being involved in such a thing, let me know.
Sorry, Omni, I’m just not scared of you. I just wrote a nice little rundown of your team, but deleted it to not give you any advice. Let’s just say I can see you dropping to 6th place by the end of the season.
Don’t forget about me… I intend to hang on to fourth with all my might. I figure if I finish above White Lightning I must be doing something right!
Seriously, if everything breaks EXACTLY right, I can see how I can gain 18 points. Wins, Saves, FP, HR are all tightly bunched, with me generally at the low end of the bunch. And I should probably catch Munch in K’s if I play my innings right.
I’m not predicting I actually will gain 18 points - just saying it is possible.
These deep leagues are great - the Melting Pot is REALLY tough to find replacements for injured players. I had to pick up Joe Crede and Eric Munson when Koskie was out - you never touch those kinds of players in standard Yahoo leagues. In my public Yahoo league, I just picked up Carlos Lee from the waiver wire, and Kevin Millar off the free agent pool…
I really thought the secret to FP would be playing three 1B. One at 1B, one at IF, one at Util. I thought that since they get so many chances, they’d drive the percentage up. The problem with my plan was that except for Helton, the 1B I drafted didn’t hit, so I couldn’t play them much!
Looking at Weirddave’s roster to try to figure out why he is leading in FP - I see he’s got Biggio at 2B. Having a .996 at 2B, which is usually a low FP position. Plus I’ll bet he had Mora at SS for part of the year - and he was playing the outfield.
I still can’t figure out how I dropped from 2nd to 5th overnight in SDMB_1. And I don’t look to be coming back any time soon. Ah well. Fewl, I would love to contribute to a fantasy baseball blog.
And I think it’s fairly safe to go ahead and congratulate you now on the Melting Pot championship. I’ve squeezed about as much as I can out of my offense (1st place in everything but SB and OBP (I’ll get my AVG back), and not too much potential in SB to gain more than 1 pt), and my pitching deficits are pretty large. I don’t see your 11 point lead going anywhere.

Seriously - that’s an impressive turnaround. That’s what’s so nice about having these historical standings that FF has been posting - it lets you see trends like this.
I’m not real sure of the best way to go about the idea – not the blog itself, that’s pretty simple to set up, but the content and such. Email me if you have thoughts on the subject, WL.
Will do. This week I’m stretched a little thin though, what with three football drafts and moving to a new apartment, but I’ll give it some thought and drop you a line at some point.
Lot of movement in the 2-4 spots in the SDMB_1 league, as well as in the lower rungs. FF, you’ve put on a wonderful performance lately. It’s great to see people real active when they don’t have a chance at the top spot like you’ve been. It’s disheartening when things aren’t going well in fantasy sports, but you’ve really pulled through. Good job.
I cannot believe I have a 3.72 ERA. I remember when I was pushing 4.15, and couldn’t get it to dip at all. Prior has been a lifesaver. I also can’t believe that I can legitimately gain about 8 more points overall.
Munch, there’s a month left in the season. I still expect to win every league I’m in. At worst, I’ll be in contention right to the last at-bat of the season.
