My bad. I thought you were Rackensack. You’re certainly still in contention.
For second!

Hey, I intend to hold on to second for all I’m worth - I like the view from up here.
Unfortunately, catching you seems out of the question, Munch. My team has been rolling the last two months or so, but yours has been even hotter. Looking back to July 7, I’m up 17 points in the standings, but you’re up 19.5!
I mean, even if Ichiro! keeps playing like Marquis Grissom, and Marquis Grissom keeps playing like Tom Goodwin… I don’t see how it’s possible to catch you. Not with that pitching staff.

Didja notice I’ve benched Ichiro for the last 5 days? I’ve friggin’ benched Ichiro, a MVP contender (before this craptastic slump). But seriously, what’s up with my pitching?!? Halladay pitched 10 shutout innings on Saturday. How can I argue with that? I was really worried about my staff around the All Star break - they just weren’t getting it done. I was ready to bail on a bunch of them.
But now I could end up with both Cy Young winners (Halladay and Prior), although it’ll probably be Loaiza and Schmidt (I refuse to believe a reliever will win one).
Believe it.
Well Fewl, we’re really putting a race together over in Melting Pot, eh? Good luck to ya.
Yep, we are. Because my damn pitching has fallen apart. The pitching I tried to bolster by weakening my hitting – who was it I traded for Mulder?
Of course, in SDMB_1, the opposite has happened. I tried to strengthen my offence by trading pitching.
“The best-laid plans…”
The trade was Manny Ramirez and Kenny Rogers for Mark Mulder and Shannon Stewart.
Weird how these things work out sometimes… Stewart’s outplayed Ramirez, and Mulder’s gone.
Yeah, that was it. I’m not complaining, Wilson, just noting that I paved another stretch of road with my good intentions.
Well hey Fewl don’t take all the credit. Remember that I brought in Colon and Lowe to buff up my rotation and improve my dismal pitching stats. And Frank Thomas and Alex Sanchez to bolster my offense.
Oh and all my motivational speeches to my players. I’m sure those had an immeasurable impact.
Hey, WL, I didn’t say I paved the whole road.

… about the Melting Pot league.
Since we are talking about making this a keeper league starting with next year, and I’ve never been part of a keeper league before, I thought I’d look over everybody’s roster and decide for you who you would keep if we were doing three keepers after this season. Just to get an idea of what to expect, what quality would be left, what positions would be kept, etc.
Of course, these are just my best guesses, and I’d love to hear feedback from you if you disagree with who I picked for you (or for anyone else) to keep.
And anyone else who wants to comment, like the owners from the other keeper league, feel free. You can figure out the league format from Fatwater Fewl’s posts above.
I’m not really asking anyone to give away strategy secrets… wait, I guess I am asking, but that’s not the whole point of this. I wanted to see what it would be like, and I thought I’d share.
I assumed a three year total keep of a player, so older players weren’t heavily penalized. I also did absolutely no checking about contract status/free agency, which could be critical since this league is AL only.
WLs Theocracy
Keepers: Nomar, Vernon Wells, Johan Santana
Close calls: Tim Hudson, Eric Chavez, Aubrey Huff, Derek Lowe, Bartolo Colon
I could see Hudson for Santana or Wells, actually.
Sleepers
Keepers: Jeter, Mussina, Mariano Rivera
Close calls: Mark Mulder, Joel Piniero, Teixiera
I guess Mulder’s injury would mean that Moose and Mo get the nod over him. Teixiera’s an intriguing possibility.
Winnowill
Keepers: Miguel Tejada, Hank Blalock, Esteban Loaiza
Close calls: Varitek, Carlos Delgado, CC Sabathia, Carl Crawford
Delgado’s tough to drop, I thought the balance of having one pitcher was more important.
Saskodies
Keepers: Bret Boone, Carlos Beltran, Roy Halladay
Close Calls: Barry Zito, Rich Harden
I was surprised how much better Halladay’s peripheral numbers were than Zito’s this year.
Highlanders (me)
Keepers: Jason Giambi, Manny Ramirez, Andy Pettite
Close Calls: Eddie Guardado, Hideki Matsui, maybe Nick Johnson? Nah.
Jose Contreras is another intriguing possibility. I think Andy may be a potential free agent, so that is one strike against him.
Chaosophers
Keepers: Ichiro!, Magglio Ordonez, Tim Wakefield
Close Calls: Jamie Moyer, Melvin Mora, Troy Percival
How long is Jamie Moyer going to pitch? Only his age prevents him from getting the nod.
Saskatoon Locusts
Keepers: Jorge Posada, Keith Foulke, Pedro Martinez.
Close Calls: none, really. Johnny Damon, I guess
Rally Monkey
Keepers: A-Rod (duh), Mike Sweeney, Troy Glaus
Close Calls: Ramon Ortiz, Darin Erstad, Bill Mueller
Or maybe K-Rod?
Portland Expos
Keepers: Alfonso Soriano, Torii Hunter, Garret Anderson
Close Calls: Rafael Palmiero, Jarrod Washburn
So who’s left over to draft? Looking over the Close Calls, there are definitely some good players left, especially at OF and 1B. Even some good SP as well. I’m guessing that very few closers would be kept.
Who would be the first player drafter, after the keepers are taken? I’d guess whoever Saskodies chooses to drop amongst Halladay, Zito, Beltran and Bret Boone. Or Vlad, of course.
Comments? Thoughts? Calls for me to get a life?
I see no trouble with your picks here. They’re all legitimate keepers, especially in our league. I suspect that WL might keep Hudson over Santana. Or even keep Hudson and Santana over Wells.
I’d keep Nomar, Wells and Chavez.
Hmmm, I’d keep Jeter but not Mussina or Rivera. I just don’t trust any pitcher’s health enough to use one of three picks on him. So, that would leave me with Jeter, Teixeira, and Aaron Boone.
I briefly considered Dmitri Young or Jay Gibbons, but the three I chose would give me a very strong and flexible infield.
Tejada and Blalock, yes. But no one should keep Loaiza over Delgado. Loaiza just had himself a career year. Maybe he can do it again. Maybe. But Delgado puts up solid-to-tremendous stats year after year.
Boone and Beltran for sure. If I had to keep a pitcher, it’d be Halladay. But looking deeper into the Saskodies roster I see Carlos Lee, Eric Hinske, and Angel Berroa.
Lee is having a very good year. Hinske has finally started to come around. And Berroa’s numbers should not only make him the AL ROY in a landslide (sucks that Matsui will get it), but compare favourably to Nomar and Jeter’s.
Berroa would be my choice for the third keeper.
I’ll be back with answers to these and other questions, along with comments on your picks for yourself and the rest of the league, either later tonight or tomorrow morning.
Naw, don’t get a life. Then you wouldn’t be posting such fine things for me to respond to.
I completely missed Angel Berroa - don’t know why. I guess he’s not on my mental radar - it hasn’t really sunk in to my brain how good he’s been this year.
Well, obviously you rate keeping pitchers a lot lower than I do. I did wonder if I was overvaluing them as I went along, especially since pitchers only have 6 categories as opposed to hitters 7. Still, Aaron Boone? He just strikes me as a player really likely to decline. Milton Bradley is another option if you were taking hitters, I would think his upside compares favorably to Young and Gibbons, if he can stay healthy (big if).
Yes, as far as pitchers go, there’s the category difference but what keeps me from considering almost all pitchers as keeper options is the constant stress on their arms and, if their mechanics get even slightly out of whack, on their bodies. I figure it makes pitchers in general much more susceptible to injuries than hitters.
Aaron Boone: my reasoning is that he will qualify at 2B and 3B next season. His average ain’t much, but he has power and speed and should have plenty of opportunity to score and drive in runs as part of the Yankee lineup.
Bradley has more overall upside (power/speed/OBP/AVG) than Gibbons or Young, but the latter two will qualify at more than one position next season. Even with only nine teams, an AL league is fairly deep; therefore the positional flexibility you get with Boone, Gibbons or Young makes them very viable keepers to my mind.
Definitely Giambi and Ramirez. Those two alone would give you a significant edge in everything but SB’s. Pettitte or Contreras are the best choices from your pitching staff. But Contreras is still something of an unknown quantity while there would be pitchers as good or better than Pettitte available in the draft.
So, for your third keeper, I’d look for a player who would add to the offensive edge you already have and who would give you some SB’s. I could make a case for either Koskie or Baldelli, but I think it should be Koskie because of his infield position and the fact that he’ll provide SB’s as well as contributing in almost every other category.
No argument with the first two. Wakefield is too inconsistent. Moyer is too old.
The third keeper on erislover’s roster should come down to a choice between Bernie Williams (that Yankee lineup), Michael Young (the Rangers lineup, the hitter’s park), and David Ortiz.
I’d keep Ortiz. He’s been a revelation since the All-Star break:
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
60 220 38 60 14 2 21 54 24 43 0 0 .273 .344 .641 .985
Not a lot to argue with here. Once you get past Damon, there’s Durazo, Randa, Jacque Jones…
I’d agonize for a while and end up keeping Damon over Foulke on principle.
Yep, those are the three. That’s the beginning of a fine offence.
I’d think awhile and probably go with Palmeiro over Hunter. Or I’d flip a coin. Or I might keep only two players. That way I’d be sure to have the first pick of the draft and if I didn’t like anyone out there better than either of the two I couldn’t decide between, I really would flip a coin.
There’s actually quite a lot left. Working just from your list of Close Calls, and not ranked, here’s what we’d have:
Hitters
Aubrey Huff
Eric Chavez
Mark Teixiera
Jason Varitek
Carlos Delgado
Carl Crawford
Hideki Matsui
Nick Johnson
Melvin Mora
Darin Erstad
Bill Mueller
Rafael Palmiero
Pitchers
Tim Hudson
Derek Lowe
Bartolo Colon
Mark Mulder
Joel Piniero
CC Sabathia,
Barry Zito
Rich Harden
Eddie Guardado
Jose Contreras
Jamie Moyer
Troy Percival
Ramon Ortiz
K-Rod
Jarrod Washburn
My first choice from a list like that would be Hudson or Mulder. Then Delgado and Huff.
You know, this league ain’t so deep after all. I’d like to see us expand to at least 10 teams. 12 would be perfect.
I haven’t looked at your picks yet Wilson so I’ll post what I see and see how we match up.
WLs Theocracy: Keeping only three? I’d have a tough time here. I’d want to hang on to Nomar, Wells, Chavez, Santana, Hudson, and Colon. Sentimental favorite Trot Nixon merits a mention. Based purely on expected draft status I think I have to take Nomar, Hudson… gosh, and Colon. Well, maybe stay away from Colon due to the danger that he doesn’t get resigned in Chicago. I think I’m deadlocked between Wells and Chavez… 3B is a much more shallow position, but I’m tired of Chavvy, and if Tejada leaves the A’s offense will be pretty limp. And Wells is an absolute bomber. Hard to say. Santana’s very strong but is far less likely to be a top-27 pick next season. (Check out Trot’s season stats, you’ll be shocked… and that’s in only about 450 at-bats. And he’s an OPS superstar)
The Sleepers/Fatwater Fewl: I think I’d go with Mulder, Mussina, and Rivera. No truly standout candidates on offense, Teixeira comes close but probably isn’t a top-27 and I think that’s my main evaluative tool here. (Side Note 1: I hadn’t realized until just now what a fantastic season this team put together with very few big-name players. Wow.) (Side Note 2: Jay Gibbons, lord what an incredible pick in the 17th round. .280/25/100 from that low in the draft. I guess that kind of thing explains Side Note 1.)
Winnowills Winners: Delgado’s no question. You gotta go with Blalock. Tejada is so tempting, especially if the rumors are true that he’s headed to New York. Could be a huge first-rounder if she lets him go, but then you don’t want to see your keeper pick go to the other league. The other candidates would be Loaiza, depending if you believe this year or not, and Varitek.
Saskodies: Another big decision for a team with four obvious keepers: Zito, Halladay, Boone and Beltran are all no-brainers. I think I’d leave out Boone myself.
Highlanders/Wilson: Giambi, Manny, and Pettitte. Pretty straightforward. Personally I’ll be rooting for Manny to get moved this offseason but that’ll be impossible to predict and you can’t pass him up.
Chaosophers/erislover: Real easy here, and I’m fairly sure these were his (computer’s) top three picks in the draft too: Ordonez, Ichiro, Bernie Williams. Clemens is done and Moyer should be; nobody else is close to keeper status (checking back, I was wrong, he took Percy before Williams).
Saskatoon Locusts: Posada. Pedro. You have to stay away from Foulke because we don’t know where he’ll be next year. The best offensive season on this squad was posted by Edgar Martinez, but the unabated aging of the Mariners as well as E-Mart himself has to put you off. Damon or Jones would be next in line.
Rally Monkey/deb: ARod. Possibly Glaus although that shoulder’s got to scare you. Potentially Sweeney or even Mueller.
Portland Expos: Soriano and Anderson have to stay. After that, hard to say. The other offensive candidates would be Hunter and Palmeiro but I’d be wary of them both: Palmeiro may have just had his last good year, and Hunter’s likely to fall in next season’s draft due to his off year. Nobody stands out behind the mound; I’d recommend Ponson except that he’s a Giant. I think I’m going with Hunter over Palmeiro.
So I think these are my choices:
WL Nomar, Hudson, Colon
Fewl Mulder, Mussina, Rivera
Winnowill Delgado, Blalock, Tejada
Odies Zito, Halladay, Beltran
Wilson Giambi, Manny, Pettitte
erl Ordonez, Ichiro, Williams
Locusts Posada, Pedro, Damon
deb ARod, Glaus, Sweeney
Expos Soriano, Anderson, Hunter
