SDMB Weight Loss Club, September

I understand. One of the things that motivated my decision to diet was an embarrassing spate of trousers splitting at the thigh.

Congrats on the milestone.

I weighed in today at exactly 220.0. That’s 3.6 pounds down from last week! And a total of 9.2 pounds since Week One (I’m shooting for at least 0.8 pounds in the next week, to hit the 10 pound mark).

Yes I know what you’re talking about :stuck_out_tongue: . Things like this make it all worth it so good for you.

I have a serious leg goal myself. I want to be able to fit into winter boots, the kind that zip up over the calf. I have always had large calves, even when thinner. Now when I was heavy, I could never find boots that would fit my calves so lets see if I can finally find some boots this year! My legs have become quite muscular and my calves are still rather big but I know they can’t be as big as last year. We’ll see.

Oh yes, I started doing abs this week, FINALLY. I hate doing abs so this is an achievement of some sorts for me

OK, so I’m on business and not getting my regular exercise. I’m on the 10th floor so I go down the steps each morning figuring it is better than nothing.

Yesterday after going down all 10 flights I encounter a member of the hotel staff. She says: What floor did you come from? You aren’t even breathing heavy.

I say: The 10th, but going down is easy.

She gives me one of these looks:

Not wanting to make it worse I just kept walking.

The boot thing was a huge one for me - I have stocky legs even now, it’s just how I’m shaped. The first time I found a pair of non-extended calf boots that actually fit me, I was so ecstatic that my MIL bought them for me.

Yeah, yeah, rub it in. I’ve been flirting with that weight for a couple of weeks. Tease!

Khadaji, when it comes to exercise, anything you do is better than nothing! Keep looking for little ways to work in more movement, and you’ll be fine!

OMG, I’m reading all these posts about boots. I hadn’t even thought of boots! I must go try some on!!

I’ve always had big calf muscles. The last time I had boots that went more than about two inches higher than my ankle was in high school, when I had a lovely pair of black suede cowboy boots. If I could get back to a point where: A. boots would fit over my calves again and B. walking in such shoes wouldn’t give me criplling knee pain after an hour, I would be so excited.

I’m having another very stressful week, and things won’t be letting up for awhile. Work’s going to be rough for another 3-4 weeks, and my great-grandfather is very ill and entering hospice care, so that’s putting an emotional strain on everyone. I’m a stress eater, so I just want to curl up on the couch with a bag of M&Ms and go catatonic. It’s hard to keep my momentum going with all this, but I’m trying. If I lose even one pound this week, I’ll be thrilled.

Okay, I’m back again!

After trying to do get back on track by myself for the last few weeks (and not doing very well), I decided to go back to Weight Watchers last evening.

I knew I had put on weight over the summer, but was still shocked at the scale–184.2 pounds! I was around 170 to 175 the last time I weighed in at the end of June.

All you people with big calves should look into cycling. I’m a guy, so I don’t have the boot issue (unless I want to dress like a pirate I suppose), but I’ve always had big legs. One time in high school a friend of mine said my calves looked bigger than my thighs (I was wearing longish shorts). I said maybe they were bigger than his thighs.

Welcome back! You know the saying: If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging! You’ve stopped digging. Congratulations!

Welcome back! It certainly does sneak up on us doesn’t it!

Well I do some cycling at the gym if you consider that. My problem is that most of my calf now is muscle. I have 16 inch calves!!! There is a little bit of fat that could be trimmed off but not much. I think my running at night has really paid off as the muscle is quite defined.

Sigh, we’ll see what happens when I try on boots.

That’s the difference between men and women I guess. I like my big calves. I think they look great in shorts. Go figure.

Weigh-in day here. I am down 3.8 lbs for the week! I guess the extra exercise time I put in, and getting back on track with the diet really did help. 96 lbs down! Go me!

Let me revisit my own feelings for a minute. I actually LIKE shapely calves. And they can even be on the larger side. Maybe just not quite as large as 16 inches  . I mean, for a chick, it’s usually hard to build muscle. But my calves? No problem… Actually my quads are comin along nicely too

While I’m fantasizing, I’d love to have ankles too. I have the dreaded cankles. I never had ankles, even when I was quite thin. My legs curvy and strong. Capable legs.

The physical part of having big calves can be quite nice, I agree. I like having powerful legs. They are what carried around all of my weight those 96 lbs ago.

I just don’t get the fashion part of it and never really have. I can’t fit into boots? Then I don’t wear them. Well except for my steel toed ones. But they are much more like shoes in style anyway.

But then again that’s just one gay amish man’s opinion!

Now back to the OP. It was happy hour time for us here last night, a local monthly thing. They put out a really nice food spread and I did overindulge a bit, but did pretty well. I used a small dessert plate instead of a regular sized plate, and took little bits of everything. I plan on exercising today and keeping on track with the diet too.

It was worth it though. We had fun with our friends and simply enjoyed the sheer spectacle that a gathering of gay bears, cubs, and admirers can be!

Can I join even if I only have 6 pounds to lose or will the other posters stone me to death?

We wouldn’t do that. I’ve only got about ten to drop. (Never mind the amount I’ve already lost)

Sorry

Although, there’s a chance I won’t make my self-designated goal this week, as I went to a barbecue yesterday and…used up a few bonus points. That cupcake was damn good, though.

[GIR]I miss you, cupcake.[/GIR]

It wasn’t a suggestion for slimming down your calves, but for putting them to good use. Calves and quads are the main muscles you use on the downstroke and provide most of your motive power.
