Sears Repair Direct? I'd rather take the next OceanGate ride

Sounds like your over under is through.

You asked for it.

It’s just Roe now. They don’t have a buck in their name.

Heard back from Sears Home Direct via Facebook

We didn’t get a response from the manufacturer on the parts. Your agreement expired on 3/19/23 the service will not be covered. This will be a cash call you will be responsible for the parts and labor. Let us know if you would like to set a service appointment.

I explained the situation

But the repair was started under warranty and never completed AND I have the paper you sent saying repairs are done on the first visit, Plus the technician said the parts needed were ordered through Sears in the warranty period but they never arrived. So explain to me how you are not responsible to finish the repair under warranty. Preferably over the phone.

The drama continues

Small claims court. Sounds like you have clear evidence in your favour. They probably won’t even contest it. They are just hoping you’ll give up.

He may have no one to sue.

A person who looks suspiciously like the repairman wearing a fake mustache will mournfully tell you that the repairman passed away.

The last time I bought an extended warranty was for an HP laptop I bought from Fry’s Electronics. The power jack in the back physically broke. I brought it to Fry’s and they sent it to HP. Six months later (no exaggeration) I got it back but this time the screen was broken. I mean when I went to the store, and they brought it to me and powered it up to show that it was fixed, the screen had lines running through it that weren’t there when I’d dropped it off.

They sent it back to HP, I waited another 6 months, and when they showed it to me again there was something else wrong. At that point I said, fuck it, HP is worthless and can’t fix their own shit, this was a massive waste of money. (Both the computer itself and the warranty.)

That was the last time I ever bought an extended warranty or an HP product.

I didn’t blame Fry’s though; they were just a reseller and didn’t have anything to do with the problems. I continued to shop there until they closed.

It sounds like someone from “Sears Home Direct” answered his query on Facebook. So there is some company in existence by that name (it appears). That would be a starting point for finding out who the defendant should be.

WTF?! I just got a text that a tech is coming out next week. I wonder if they will try to charge me for it.

I suspect they will.

From the description of your conversation, it seems possible that they could interpret the discussion as a request for a service call that you would be more than happy to pay for. Even if you thought you declined in no uncertain terms.

I predict the tech will tell you that he needs to replace a part and he’ll be back to complete the job. Then he’ll ask for $139.

I’m kind of nostalgic for Sears mostly for their big catalogs that arrived near the holidays. But they never ever would process my credit card applications even after I married.

I had an oven range I bought from a Sears hometown store. The owner delivered it and in the process dinged it good and left a scratch. They sent someone out to replace a panel but needed to remove the oven door. The repair guy couldn’t get the oven door reseated to close properly. Fubar!

They ended up swapping out it out for a new range same model and this time the owner used a dolly to bring it around rather than muscling it by hand.

I do miss those. Even their biggest catalog didn’t include all their products, they had additional specialty catalogs for auto parts and outdoor power tools among others. Of course there was no internet or Amazon back then. Even before technology changed it all they were in decline, too much competition from other stores, malls and the specialty stores cut into their market.

My brother and I used to love going through the Sears catalog to look at the pictures of toys. It was like a window into a wonderland.

Today you just browse Amazon. My kids will never know those joys.

Update. My mysterious Facebook contact claims it’s covered. Since Mrs Cad and I had already agreed that we would have to pay another repair outfit for our oven I’ll pay if the tech says he has no idea what I’m talking about and here’s your bill then take all my documentation to Small Claims

In other news: I put this in the pit for a couple reasons but now I’m thinking I’ll ask a mod to move it maybe to the Mundane pile or IMHO.

so, while it still sits in the PIT, let me add a quick and heartfelt “F.U. Sears” …

and may your punishment be to be what you have become.

I’m waiting for the service call next week before requesting the move. Expecting more pit-worthy material.

I’ll bet 9 out of 10 people in your situation give up before getting as far as you have. That means you’re a tiny bit past the point of total loss now. Sure, financially it’s still a total loss, but you’ve earned a modicum of satisfaction so far. Good luck and keep up the dogged determination.

Back in the dark ages we had a Kenmore dishwasher - fancy thing with a computer panel etc. It was starting to act funky but we didn’t have a bunch of money to throw at it so …
One fine day I got a phone call from Sears offering to extend my warranty (which had run out) for a relatively small amount of money. Normally I hang up on those kinds of calls but hmmm… I thought.
“Does it take immediate effect?”
“Yes mam, as soon as your credit card clears your dishwasher will be under warranty for a year.”
“And it covers everything?”?
“Yes”
“Labour cost?”
“Yes”
“Parts, like the computer?” (that thing was feckin’ expensive)
“Yes”
“Okey dokey, sign me up”
I waited until I got all the lovely warranty paperwork from them and called to have my dishwasher fixed. Getting the repairman there was an exercise in frustration and multiple phone calls to some random call centre thousands of miles away, but I persevered and the dishwasher got fixed.
I was very pleased.

Sears used to have a good replacement policy for their Craftsman hand tools.
