Disclaimer- I have no idea if this is GQ material.
Just this morning, I was driving from the UW to visit my grandparents on Magnolia. This, of course, involves going through Freemont. Going through Freemont, in turn, involves one of my favorite things ever; driving past the Inter-
Right there, the little blue bridge and the Greek restaurant and NO FUNKY STATUE. Not no cool signs or ribbons or tshirts on it- no statue at all! A huge gaping hole in the sidewalk surrounded by this weird yellow tape.
Is it being refurbished? Did a car crash into it? Was it stolen? Is this some kind of cruel practical joke? Will it ever come back? I can’t find any information about this. Does any Seattle doper know?
I haven’t heard of it missing either so I Googled and found this article.
In part, it says, "According to Lorelei Mesic, Project Manager for the Seattle Department of Transportation, “The Interurban must be moved as part of a major upgrade to the Fremont Bridge. This $36 million construction project will ensure the bridge will continue to serve the community for generations to come.” New supports for bridge approaches are now under construction, and starting in early summer the street deck approaching the bridge will be replaced. The project also includes upgrading the electrical-mechanical works of the bridge.
The Waiting for the Interurban will be temporarily installed just one block east, outside Fremont’s neighborhood-oriented museum, History House. It will be located on a street-side at 790 N 34th Street, at the intersection of N 34th and Troll Way N. Once bridge construction is complete, the statue will be re-installed in its current location, on the island at N 34th Street and Fremont Avenue N."
So all is well for our bronze friends and we get a better bridge too.
I don’t go through Fremeont all that often. Thanks for sparing me a potential heart attack on my next trip thataways… I like that tableau and how people decorate it a lot.
