Second-favorite forum?

After SDMB, of course.

I’ve recently figured out how to get the most enjoyment out of message boards, but I am a member of very few. What do people suggest? This is one of those things where Google gives a little too much info.

I’m not a gamer or a bodybuilder; other than that, I’d rather see presumably well-intentioned recommendations of things I can tell I’m not interested in than issue arrogant lists of criteria and miss out on something awesome. I think just posting this is arrogant enough for today.

Better suited for IMHO.

Moved from Cafe Society -> IMHO.

Second after this? I’m into sci/fantasy/gaming, and so probably spend the most time at the Spacebattles forum. They do as the name implies lean strongly towards the blow-stuff-up segment of sci-fi; still, it’s nice to be on another forum where I can mention some 30 year old sci-fi book and people know it. I used to spend a lot of time on the City of Heroes forums, but have barely visited since NCSoft decided to kill the game.

There are other message boards? Why didn’t someone tell me?

July 98 (private) message board, currently being hosted on Network54. Way back in the day (fall 1997) we were the Parent’s Place July 98 Expecting Club because we were all pregnant and expecting babies in July of 1998. After being absorbed by iVillage we broke away. This month we are celebrating out 15th anniversary. It’s been quite the wonderful journey watching our babies grow up over the years.

But I must confess, SDMB is actually my second favorite. July 98 is my favorite.

Ah, I tried my search on IMHO and it was much more successful (and I found enough overlap with Giraffe to convince me if there’s a rivalry, it’s not as bad as I feared).

Sometimes I still miss usenet.

I was just reading an archived conversation where someone asked a question and got some wonderful replies form a couple brilliant individuals.
And twice as many replies from a foul mouthed troll insulting him just for asking.

Sometimes I need to remember why I never made much of an effort to follow usenet after moving to an isp that didn’t provide access.

I used to go to Etiquette Hell but left when a nosy co-worker joined and quickly figured out my username. She would actually comment out loud in Cubeville about things that I’d posted on the board. I no longer felt safe and anonymous. Plus the board is annoying as hell - people post vague topic headlines so you have to open the thread to see wtf they’re talking about, and then it’s usually just someone getting butthurt over a perceived etiquette slight. Also there’s a word filter for “impolite” words and acronyms, which I don’t think is necessary on a board full of adults, you know? But it IS a very good message board for killing time, as long as you’re good about not getting caught up in drama.

I wouldn’t have had to ask if Usenet still existed in any meaningful sense. As anythign like what it was in the day.

You’re assuming this place is my number one…in fact, the SDMB is my number two.

SA Forums are my number one, have been for a few years.

Uhhh,sorry? :stuck_out_tongue:

I like to cook (and eat) so I like chowhound.

<points finger at bouv>

You are not of the Body!!

Giraffeboards.

Something Awful for me. It has well moderated forums/threads for pretty much

I spend more time here than anywhere else but The Dope is number two for me as well.

My favorite forum is The Shout, a small community of far-flung Pete Townshend fans.

Probably Fallen Leaves Model Horse Forum. It’s where I get all my hobby info.

Which one is worse to admit “stormfront”, “NAMBLA” or “justinbieberfan.org:slight_smile:

Sff.net, mostly for the private areas.

Of course, my favorite ever was the Science Fiction Round Table on GEnie, many of whom are on sff.net.

Those last two are pretty much equivalent, though, aren’t they?
