I honestly think that a good part of the reason is that it makes them feel important. Same reason military and police forces use so many TLAs. Because if they know what it means and you don’t, it just goes to show that they’re doing a good job.
I have a hazy recollection of reading something (probably in the WaPo circa 1993) that the codenames helped depersonalize the people being guarded. When you’re with someone all the time you can’t help but start to get close to them on a personal level. Thinking of them as a codename rather than as cute little Malia makes it psychologically easier to do their jobs. Does this ring any bells for anyone else?
