Seeing Charlie Pride in concert

I’ll be in Windsor, Ontario in October and my friend picked up complementary tickets to the concert at Caesar’s Casino.

I know nothing about his music, although I’m sure I’ll recognize some of the songs as my parents listened to a decent amount of country music radio in the 70’s and early 80s. I know he showed up on a few TV shows, maybe the Dukes of Hazzard and some of the late night music shows.

Any albums or song recommendations I should listen to? I’ve got Apple music and there’s YouTube as well.

Charley was at the peak of his popularity in the 60s and 70s. He was black and country at a time when that caused considerable cognitive dissonance. His music is pop-ish and enjoyable even if you go in having heard none of it before. Keep in mind, though, he is elderly (b. 1938) and his voice is no longer what it was.

Kiss an Angel Good Morning.

I always thought of it as Kiss an Angle Good Morning…

He had a big hit with Hank Williams’ Kaw-Liga.

It was burgers, and fries, and cherry pies …

Is anybody going to San Antone, or Phoenix Arizona…

Love his hits. Very unique voice, in country or any other genre. Also a fine gentleman. I got in touch with his agent/manager and they let my mother-in-law–who had recently been widowed–backstage to meet Charley, get autographs, etc. A total class act.

Check out:

“The Snakes Crawl At Night”
“Crystal Chandeliers”
“Kiss An Angel Good Morning”
“Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger”

and his covers of

“Me And Bobby McGee”
“Sea Of Heartbreak”
“Lovesick Blues”

I always liked “Does my Ring Hurt Your Finger” and I had no idea he was still alive and kicking.
