Selection of the new Democratic Presidential Ticket

FWIW, Hakim Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are also waiting. Broadly, it seems to be that some Democratic leadership figures (whether active or retired) are generally holding off for now. Makes some sense – those three represent the entire Democratic Party in one sense or another. They likely want everyone else to have the opportunity to speak unfettered and avoid unduly affecting the endorsements from on high.

I do know that both Clintons and Nancy Pelosi have already endorsed Harris.

She’s just moved up to 770.

All 23 Democratic state governors have now endorsed Harris. Plus 41 out of 47 Democratic Senators (the four Independents still staying out of it for now).

Summary

I disagree he fumbled it. He got the UN to pass and israel to accept a reasonable and fair cease fire- it is not Bidens fault that Hamas has no desire to accept a cease fire… He sent a lot of aid to Gaza. But yes, it was a no-win.

Adam Schiff, who will be elected senator of California this fall, has to no surprise endorsed Harris for nomination and president.

I’d fantasize about some actual coordination of endorsement timing, with some big names being saved, both to squash any others that decide to try, and to keep recapturing the news cycle on way to the convention.

But how’s that old quote go, I don’t belong to an organized party, we’re Democrats.

Holy crap, no. No Gaza debate in this thread.

Drop it immediately.

Moderating

Bernie was one of Biden’s most fervent supporters. His endorsement of Harris, if it came, would be BIG.

Thanks for clearing it up for me. I think Bernie has a lot of sage wisdom to offer and I hope he continues to. I wish more people listened.

Didn’t he float some mini-primary process idea? It sounded something like

“There should be a series of a dozen town halls in the next week. Harris should automatically be invited, plus me and two or three NPCs to be named later.”

That’s how I heard it.

(NPC = geekspeak for non-player character, role playing game term for characters made and played by the gamemaster to fill out the adventure party but don’t actually count. But you all knew that.)

The Manchin cycle is he always has proposals for how democrats ought to do things in a way he perceives as better than what the rest of the party thinks but he won’t ever put his hat into the ring on his own to do it. It has to be the party come grovelling to him.

I’d go with more of a “You can bring a horse to water” deal, based on my experience.

The horse thinks that the guy forcing him to drink is being an a-hole and the guy thinks that the horse needs to guzzle up before heading into the desert.

Both perspectives are reasonable in the absence of a greater understanding.

Nate Silver just dropped a post titled “Harris is the Clear Choice of Democratic Voters”.

There have been thirteen polls of Democrats on “who would you support if Biden weren’t running” this year, seven of them in the last month. Harris won them all, except for one that was won by Michelle Obama, who, all together now, ISN’T GOING TO RUN. Last month, either Obama or Newsom took second place in all polls. Previous second place finishers were Obama, Harris (the one Obama won), and…Hillary Clinton! And…Bernie Sanders!

There is Twitter talk tonight that Harris has already locked up the necessary votes for the nomination.

From WaPo:

Harris gains enough pledged delegate support for a likely Democratic nomination

A majority of Democratic delegates have pledged to support Vice President Harris as the party’s next presidential nominee,…

Also being reported by CNN, Fox News (!), the Failing New York Times, Associated Press and others.

The people at Fox are smart enough to know that they need her to stop being the headline and get the focus back on Trump. So get the news out quick and move on. I haven’t seen a story about Trump in a couple of days. That’s not good for him (but great for us).

From the WaPo article above; Harris was at the campaign headquarters, speaking to the workers, when;

She also welcomed a surprise phone call from President Biden, who — in his first public remarks since dropping out of the race — urged the campaign staff to rally around Harris. “Embrace her, she’s the best,” Biden said.

Doesn’t get stronger than that.

And the money is rolling in:

In the hours since President Joe Bidenannounced that he would end his teetering reelection campaign, Harris and the Democratic party have pulled in roughly $250 million in online donations and major donor commitments.

She has the endorsement of the party chair in all 50 states. It is much more of a tidal wave than I thought it would be. I’m really glad that her first statement was that she hoped to earn the nomination. I don’t want it to look like she’s being annointed. I do think it ‘s good for some heavy hitters to hold out until she is formally chosen. I’m good with Obama, Jeffries and Shumer waiting.

That said, what I am hearing is encouraging for the get out the vote effort. The attitude is less that Biden was too old and feeble and she was forced on people as the only real viable choice and more that Biden threw himself on a grenade to save the country and we can’t let him down.
