I was on a dating website and I tried to put something in my profile, I thought I’d go for a bit of self-depreciating humour. (I’m a 45 year old gay male)
I never met anyone off the site but I thought it was kind of funny
I put
Middle Aged Homosexual with a bus pass
If this interests anyone hit me up
Now I can understand how you could say “that’s not funny,” but I got this response from the website
You will need to redo your profile…XXX.Com does not permit anyone to sell anything in their profiles. You may submit a new profile until then your profile has reverted to its prior version.
I take it the guy who reviews the profiles thought I was trying to sell my bus pass?
Does anyone else read anything else into this?
As I said I was trying to make it self-deprecating humour, you may not think it’s funny but I thought it was pretty clear it was an attempt at humour.
Humor is tough on hookup sites. it’s also tough on a site like this one. How many times at about post 43 of a thread, some says it’s a woosh.
Maybe they did think you were selling the bus pass or yourself, or both. They sure as hell didn’t get the joke.
Self-deprecating humor on a hookup site of any kind often comes across as “i’m a looser, but I can laugh at myself”
Add some humor to your profiles, but don’t come across as a joke writer.
Save funny lines when you meet the guy.
And, IMHO, self deprecating humor written or spoken (while often funny and a sign of a person who doesn’t take himself too seriously) should be minimal.
