Self Destruction: Marie Calendar Edition

I didn’t even have to watch that - just reading the URL made me crack up!

Another False dichotomy, you could just as easily have a stroke, regardless of what you eat, due to a genetic propensity and a million other variables… or you could die tomorrow any of a million different ways. Stop driving, if you’re worried about being permanently incapacitated or dying… you take more of a chance everytime you get in a car than eating a fuckin potpie.

It’s official, the SDMB has no sense of humor.

Well of course life is all all about relative risks! Who was suggesting otherwise? I alkso mitigate my risks while driving- seat belt, good tires etc.

It’s all about playing the odds. I’d rather indulge on occasion and basically eat well and give myself the best chance of not having those problems. I get tired of seeing that meme- “I’d rather die happy than eat healthy”. People forget that there is other outcomes besides smiling and happy and then dropping dead.

Well, you know what I’m tired of? the cutesy memes- Self Destruction! A pot pie!-oohs ahhhs- My arteries are clogging just reading this, that’s soooo unhealthy I’sa a gonna die! I put on 20 pounds just reading this! Frankly it’s old hat, and in no way indicative of the reality- and the way I see it represented disjointed and with nobody even knowing half of what they speak about–it’s junk science. Frankly it’s a very unhealthy way to view food and nutrition.

“If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” - Thumper’s Mom.

Sure makes it hard to have a thread if I have to account for people with different sensibilities, The ability for someone to misinterpret, and get special dispensation from the legal department.

Dude, it’s a cheap chunk of bread, lard, salt, and turkey. It mis-represents itself as two servings…and healthy. Everything it said was a :dubious: statement. ‘Made from Scratch crust!’

It’s fast and convenient! But takes a quarter hour to nuke.

ETA: The Thread title is what’s known as a ‘hook’. It pulls people in. Do I think I’m self destructing? Not more than 100% of the rest of the world.

I like Amy’s Kitchen brand a lot too, but it bothers me that they are usually about twice the price of other brands of frozen entrees (Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Stouffers).

When I see them on sale I will usually buy several to stock up—It’s hard to justify paying as much for a frozen meal as what I would pay for a similar take-out order.

They have a broccoli cheese pot pie, which I like.

Serving size: 1 pie, 213 grams
Calories: 440
Total Fat: 22 grams, 34% RDA
Saturated fat: 10 grams, 50% RDA
Cholesterol: 45 mg, 15% RDA
Sodium: 630 mg, 26% RDA
Carbohydrates: 46 grams, 15% RDA

Note that one way this does better than the Marie Callender’s turkey pot pie is in being smaller, 213 grams vs 468. It’s less than half the size of the Marie Callender’s, by weight. I think it still makes a satisfying lunch.

Scaled up to the size of the Marie Callender’s pot pie (assuming calories scale up linearly with mass), it would have 968 calories. That’s not that different from what the Marie Callender’s turkey pot pie actually has.

Portion size is clearly part of the problem with the Marie Callender’s pot pies, as it is with a lot of foods these days.

My theory is that salty food tastes good, and salt is cheap to add to processed foods. I have a similar theory to explain the prevalence of high fructose corn syrup in processed foods.

I don’t care about the nutrition, those pies are freakin delicious. I just don’t eat them very often.

It’s a cold, rainy day here and I had to open this thread about hot turkey pies.

Again, Marie Callender makes a smaller, 10-oz pot pie. They often go on sale and I have to say, they’re really good.
