My understanding is the current republican governor will appoint someone to fill the seat for the rest of the year and the electorate will vote in November for a new senator (who presumably would take office early next year).
How they do a primary for who gets on the ballot in November I am not sure about.
So, definitely a republican till 2027. Probably a republican after that too.
In other words, he’s going to wait until the SC governor picks someone, and then claim that it was his idea.
One thing that I wonder… if he may have not so much sold out as surrendered. Saw no hope in opposing what was happening… so if this is inevitable, might as well cast my lot with it. I read from someone else, that Graham’s characteristic was he was not a leader, he was someone who managed the process for the leaders.

Oh. Well that is pretty easy to conflate with Dept. of Motor Vehicles. Perhaps it should be spelled out to eliminate this confusion.
Especially since I’m sure most people have never heard of it before, at least people not from that area.
And it’s not even correct; DMV is DC/Maryland/Virginia, not Deleware. (See how confusing it is?!)
Lindsay Graham joined the Air Force in 1982 and was in the JAG Corps. Graham left the Air Force and Graham joined the South Carolina Air National Guard in 1989.
During the 1990–1991 Gulf War, Graham was recalled to active duty, serving as a judge advocate at McEntire Air National Guard Station in Eastover, South Carolina.
He went into the Air Force reserve in 1995 and retired at the rank of colonel in 2015.
I have a lot of respect for his Miltary service. Graham could have easily left after his election to the Senate in 2002.
I am extremely disappointed with his decison to align with Trump. I guess we’ll never know why he made that decision. It certainly appears that he felt fighting Trump would be pointless and cost him reelection. What happened to Liz Cheney has to be on all the Republican leaders minds.
That’s a terrible and inexcusable reason, but we’ll never hear his thoughts in a memoir after retirement.
You’re right, it’s likely we’ll never truly know his rationale, but it’s pretty clear to me, at least: Graham had risen to a place of great political power and prestige, and he liked what that provided him. He realized that continuing to oppose Trump would not only end his political career, but also quite possibly open him up to harassment and threats from Trump and Trump’s supporters. He apparently decided that maintaining his position was more important to him than his morals or his principles.

It’s very disturbing to me when I see people who completely lose their moral compass and stop believing their time in politics should be about public service.
