Joey Ramone, lead singer of one of New York’s original punk rockers, The Ramones, is very ill.
The New York Daily news reports that Ramone, 49, is battling lymphoma. The pioneering punker and his fellow band members – Dee Dee, Marky and Johnny – all took the same last name of “Ramone” and formed the band in 1974. With the release of “Adios Amigos” in 1995, the band announced that they were breaking up.
Four skinny, awkward guys from Queens, N.Y., the Ramones made rock ‘n’ roll fun to a generation of punks, ripping through three-minute gems like “Teenage Lobotomy,” “I Wanna Be Sedated” and “Rockaway Beach.”
The Ramones, along with bands like Blondie, Television and the Talking Heads created the legacy of East Coast punk back in the mid-to-late '70s.
Man…and I was listening to The Best of all weekend…serious freak ass. Joey lies up in stasis all ill up and the Backstreet Boys still roam the streets. There is no justice in the world.
Anyway, please send out your prayers to the black headed scarecrow. Rock and Roll will lose someone great if he goes.
Does he need shock treatment? Or, perhaps, he should just be sedated.
Dude this blows. I’m still kicking myself in the ass for not going to that concert where he saw them play. Hopefully he’ll get better.
Sorry, Tiki, but I am so glad I went to see them in concert when I did. They were the highlight of what turned out to be an incredibly horrible weekend but I’m glad I went.
This bites.
Oh my God! I’ve loved him for 22 years now.
Thanks for telling us. I’ll be praying.
If I’m not mistaken, its not a death sentence; Dick Gregory is well improved of it.
Damn, that’s sad.
I have no idea how serious this is but I wish the best for Joey. Too many memories… I just hope he pulls through.
Well, crap. At least, if he dies, he went out before overstaying his welcome, unlike the Stones or Bob Dylan. Good luck, Joey.
Thanks for letting us know about this, Heath…I had no idea.
I certainly send all my good thoughts to Joey. I absolutely cannot imagine what the fate of rock ‘n’ roll would have been had there been no Ramones.
They’ve given me so much pleasure over the years, and I never tire of listening to them.
Lets hope he can beat this rap. I hate the idea of him being Here Today, Gone Tomorrow.
P.S. Heath, the original band was Joey, DeeDee, Johnny and Tommy. Marky replaced Tommy after their third album, “Rocket to Russia.”
No prob…I just pasted from a news clipping so I did not read it completely
Damn, that is sad. There would be no Clash, Sex Pistols, or Elvis Costello albums without the Ramones.
Interesting that I read this while watching the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” inductions…
Joey and his boys helped rescue rock and from the abyss, we need a band like that now.
Sorry, that last line should read “…helped rescue rock and roll from the abyss…”
