…none of these people would have won. Most Americans probably wouldn’t even know who half of these people were. And Fetterman would almost guarantee a good deal of progressive voters (more than already did) would have stayed home.
Yes, we already know that “progressives” whose lives revolve around keeping Democrats from winning elections hate Fetterman because he committed the two cardinal sins in their worldview- he believes the normal things that the average Democratic voter believes and is capable of winning elections.
The behavior of progressives during the Biden administration, when he gave them everything they claimed to want on minimum wage, student debt, and climate change and they just hated him more for it, and during the election when they openly campaigned against the Democratic ticket, shows that they are worthless as a political ally and do nothing but bring the ticket down by association with their crazy ideas. Someone who would finally disavow them in toto like Fetterman is exactly what’s needed.
Most Americans probably wouldn’t even know who half of these people were.
The assumption is that a competent politician like Josh Stein would have used his billion-dollar campaign fund to make his name and positions known, rather than to run commercials saying “Trump was right about inflation and I’m going to fix it by regulating grocery store prices federally” and other insane nonsense that Kamala’s circle of idiots landed on.
…liar.
Fetterman is a fraud. I can’t believe that the average Democratic voter supports the continuation of the war in Gaza, and all of the polling suggests otherwise.
Biden gave the police billions more in funding and in 2023 the cops killed more people than ever before. And his administration is (I’m assuming I can mention this in the pit) complicit in the genocide of the Palestinian people. (And no, I will not debate this here. But it needed to be said)
The Biden administration wasn’t a friend to progressives. Stop pretending that he was.
They literally only had months. It wouldn’t have been enough, even with a “billion-dollar campaign fund”, for someone that nobody had heard of who really isn’t very exciting to come out of nowhere to win against Trump.
You are dreaming.
…and just a reminder that Fetterman won on a progressive agenda. Then he turned around and abandoned them. He isn’t to be trusted.
No, just tossing in names that posed no danger to Trump whatsoever.
Oh, you’re THAT sort of asshole. Got it. Needless to say, none of these things actually happened in the real world.
More like that sort of sock (if you ask me).
You’re both right! Well, songs is less right, because Biden certainly didn’t give progressives ALL we wanted on minimum wage and climate change, but his economic/industrial policy overall was a vast improvement over Obama’s. And, also, his record on police reform and Gaza was atrocious.
Again, this just isn’t what happened. That’s what Hillary did. Even when he didn’t give us what we wanted, Biden treated progressives as an important part of the Democratic coalition with whom he had some policy disagreements, not as hostile alien life forms.
When sea lions argue…
I resent that! I have been entirely polite and respectful, while you have only dropped into the thread to post snarky one liners!
Anyway, WE seems to have closed the original P & E thread, and God forbid the world should be deprived of the wisdom contained in the post I was writing while he did that, so here it is:
There’s no obvious villain here. Biden screwed the party and the country over by not leaving when it was clearly time to go. That left us with a candidate with no history of success in national elections. But really, being mad at a politician for wanting to cling to power is like being mad at a dog for licking his balls…it’s just what they do.
Also, polling strongly suggested that anyone other than Biden (or maybe Sanders) wouldn’t have beaten Trump in 2020, so we owe him respect for that. And he likely couldn’t have won without a running mate who provided racial and gender balance to the ticket, so his choices were constrained there. The Democratic failure of 2024 was largely shaped by decisions which were probably necessary for the success in 2020.
You understand there’s a large excluded middle between Kamala shouldn’t be the candidate in 2028 and never run a black woman again, right?
Yes, of course I realize that. It’s my impression that some other posters here don’t.
Who said that Dems should adopt sexist or racist policies?
I don’t mean who posted opinions that were dubiously considered racist or sexist, I’m saying please give the exact quote where someone opined what you alleged. @SenorBeef went well out of their way to hammer home the point that they, being non-racist and non-sexist, would love to have a woman or POC president, but that it’s far more important for the Dems to win the White House than to score feel-good points choosing a candidate based on checking the right progressive boxes even if they have no hope to win.
I think where it started to go off the rails was when it was assumed that just because many of our country’s voters are not morally ready to vote for a woman or POC that means we need to be sure to specifically nominate such a person.
(Ran out of time)
What chance do you guys think a black, Jewish, trans woman candidate would have? No chance? Oh well, probably so. But wouldnt it be great for all the black, Jewish, trans women? Now that’s progress!
Absolutely spot on. But on the SDMB, it’s more important for many posters to signal their progressiveness to each other than to consider the reality of a situation. It’s letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
There will never be a president of the US who is a woman of color. I’m not saying that because I’m sexist and racist, but because America is. Anyone who can’t see what a bigoted society America is, especially after this most recent election, is just stupid.

There will never be a president of the US who is a woman of color.
You probably wouldn’t even have to go back 50 years to find the exact same thing being said about a black man getting elected in the US.
Societies change over time. To suggest it will never happen is shortsighted.

Societies change over time.
No shit, for example America is regressing. We just elected an insane fascist game show host to be president as a specific reaction to a black president.
What fucking planet are you living on?
