Separate Computer Users

I am using my sister’s computer which is a Dell Dimension E510. I have set the thing up with two users: me and my sister. I gave myself Administrator status since she won’t know the difference. Anyway, the first thing I did was to download Firefox, for my use only. The second thing I did was to download AdBlock. I had no trouble installing Firefox but WindowsXP refuses to install Adblock. Or maybe Norton 360 will not permit Windows to to install AdBlock. I would appreciate any information or advice as to how get AdBlock installed.

As always, thanks in advance.

Well, IMO, you ought to try disabling Norton for the installation since that’s your hunch.

Failing that, what happens when you try to install Adblock? Any error messages?

By Adblock, do you mean the Firefox extension? If so, I think that it’s been superseded by Adblock Plus 1.1.1. And, yes, exactly what error message are you getting?

I’m unable to copy the entire error window but it says that Windows is unable to open the AdBlock install program because it (Windows) doesn’t know who or what wrote the install program and is therefore unable to recognize it.

Adblock (Plus) should be a firefox addon, not a standalone Windows program. Are you getting it from here?

I was directed to the site I used by Firefox; I don’t recognize your site but will give it a try.

I also downloaded Firefox and it installed with no problems. Thanks for the site.

I’m curious. What was the site you’re downloading Adblock from?

I don’t remember; sorry.

I downloaded from your site; it seemed to install okay but I’m still seeing adds. I’ll play around a little bit and see what happens. Thanks.

I had no problems downloading and installing OpenOffice, if that means anything.

Adblock Plus needs a filter subscription so it knows which sites to block. In firefox, go under tools then adblock plus preferences and assign it a filter.

LouisB, there should only be one official source for addon downloads, and that’s the Mozilla addons site that I linked to. If your copy of Firefox directed you to any other site for Adblock, it’s possible that you either have malware or that you followed a fake advertisement for a fake Adblock. (However, it’s possible that you just used FF’s built-in Addons dialog instead of a website, in which case don’t worry)

If, after the filter subscription that engineer_comp_geek talks about, you still see a lot of ads (a few might slip by, but by and large it should be a drastic reduction), I’d recommend a spyware and virus scan.

Okay, all is well, I hope. I didn’t know about the subscription thing and I don’t know how or where I was directed previously. Anyway, it all seems okay now.

Thanks.
