Recommend a Good Ad-Blocking Program or Plug-In

A website I frequent has recently added extra advertising I would like to block. Anyone know of any good ad-blocking software? Prefereably free and easy to use.
Thanks!

Jeezus. Can we all just give it a rest? Esp. since they seem to be gone.

What Operating system do you use and what browser?

Who said I’m talking about this place?

What Exit?, I use IE 6 at work and IE 7 at home, both on Windows XP. I have Firefox loaded and occationally use it on both. This might just be what it takes to move over completely.

Over the last 2 days AdBlock Plus and Flashblock, both extensions for Firefox, have been mentioned many many times on a site I frequent.

For Firefox it is easy, just use the AdBlock Plus and Flashblock that **capybara ** mentioned. For IE6 it is a bit of a pain but there are a couple of free methods. I can email you a large hosts file I recently got that will stop a large number of ads or you can selectively restrict ads under the internet options as follows.

Two things to try for IE:
1) What I did was first view source to find the ad site and then I went into tools - internet option - security tab - restricted sites - and I added the one I found.

http://fake.adsuppliername.com/*

The view source in IE 6 is available as a right click, in IE7 it is under Page option.

2) For people having issues with the restricted web site fix in IE here is a more challenging fix.

It’s drastic and extreme caution should be used, but adding a line to your hidden hosts file typically under C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC works well.

The line I added was

127.0.0.1 http://fake.adsuppliername.com

I right clicked the file and sent to notepad, if this is not an option, choose open and select notepad to edit it.

Again use extreme caution. Don’t delete any existing lines if you are not 100% sure of what you are doing. Remember kids, we’re professionals.

When you save it, make sure that your editor is saving the file with no extension. It should not be HOSTS.txt, HOSTS.doc or any of those things. The file name should simply be HOSTS - nothing more.

At work you might not have access to this file however.

The Hosts file solution adds a small delay to loading times on my PC, I removed it and I am putting up with the single banner I get for the first load of the SDMB.

I hope this helps, this is my latest update.

That’s the reason I’m with Firefox and Adblock addon (or Adblock Plus) right now. The only time I use IE is when I visit Microsoft.com or Fozamotorsport.net. - I got an allergy to ads on sites, I would probably stop using the Internet if it wasn’t for Firefox. No joke.
