Just over two weeks ago I had an accident at a friend’s house in Long Island and got some serious lacerations on my right hand. [tripped while carrying plates and glasses into the kitchen and proceeded to land on the broken glass.]
We went to the nearest emergency room, had the hand stitched up.
Rant #1: The ER people decided a hand specialist was needed. They were preparing to give me an IV with some painkillers when the specialist arrived. He took a look and decided to stitch it up right away. He injected a “block” directly into the wounds – OW, OW, OW!!! – and proceeded to get to work on the hand. He kept telling me to relax. AFTER he was done, the ER staff finally got to give me the IV. I think it was Dilaudid. THEN, I was relaxed. My rant is that the ER people didn’t ask him to wait 5 minutes so they could give me the Dilaudid first. It would have been so much easier to relax!
Rant #2: I was told to come back to the specialist in 3 days. Um, no, I replied. I live at least an hour and a half drive away, and the bridge and/or tunnel tolls will be about $40. I will go to a doctor locally. Of course, I’ll need the records.
So I called the specialist’s office the following day to request the records. Nope, can’t help, have to contact the hospital, which I did. I was told that I couldn’t request the record directly, that the doctor had to call. This seemed weird, but OK. I notified the local doctor that I had the appointment with. When I got there for my appointment, he told me the hospital told HIM that he couldn’t get the records, that I had to request them. Fortunately, he said he could manage fine without them.
I called the hospital back. Different story this time. I have to wait for them to send me a form which I must fill out and mail back. This is done.
Today I got the stitches taken out. And I still don’t have a copy of the medical records from the hospital. I called them again. Supposedly it took four days for mail to go from New Jersey to Long Island. They claim they didn’t get my authorization until last Friday and are just now starting to work on it. “That will include the x-rays, too, right?” “Oh, no, we don’t have those. You will have to contact the Radiology Department.” Since when are x-rays not part of the record? Why didn’t anyone tell me that before? And the medical records department doesn’t know the phone number for the radiology department, either.
When I finally get through to the radiology department, they advise that they’ll be glad to send me the x-rays. I just have to fax them a statement authorizing this release. ** sigh ** With a copy of some photo ID. No, they can’t contact the Medical Records Department and get a copy of what I’ve already sent. No, I can’t scan and email, it MUST be a fax. According to the person I spoke to, they don’t have email. I just got back from the library after sending the fax.
Now, I fully understand that there are good reasons for being sure that medical records are kept private. Really, I do. But what could possibly be wrong with sending the records to the patient whose identity and address you already verified at the time services were provided?
Jumping Jehosephat!
I know, I’m glad that good, clean medical care was available, that my hand is now fully functional, there was no infection, and so on. But why is it so convoluted to get something simple done?
