One of the best games ever, Okami, is getting a sequel called Okamiden. Th bad part is that it’s for the DS.
I have mixed feeling of this announcement. On the one hand, it’s a sequel to Okami, but on the other hand, it’s not a “proper” sequel and it’s on the DS. The stylus does seem like a natural choice for the brush techniques though.
Although I have both a Wii and a DS, I’m begining to see some sort of pattern here… the sequel to The World Ends With You, a DS game, is rumoured to be for the Wii. And now we have the reverse happening with Okami.
I smell a conspiracy to “encourage” us to buy more of the other console.
Maybe, maybe not - Okami wasn’t an exclusive. I’ve got it on PS2.
That said, console exclusive games are Evil, and the proof that Satan works in marketing (well, one more proof, anyway). One of my dearest wishes is to be able to go back in time, find the father of the guy (or gal) who came up with the concept, and rip his balls off before puberty. Getting Hitler to a shrink and warning JFK can wait : some shit is serious.
That and that hand-held console games tend to be more limited in scope compared to games for the bigger consoles. Here’s a couple of pictures of the game. Chibiterasu does look awfully cute.
When I first heard of Okami, I thought it would have made more sense for it to be on the DS*. I’m glad it’s getting a DS version. Here’s hoping it will not be too limited in scope.
*Or that, when a Wii version came out, that there should have been a way to use your DS as a controller for that version.
They have a newer DS now, the DSi. It lacks the Gameboy Advance slot, but adds a couple cameras, and more online options (you can download games like WiiPlay, XBLA, PSN.)
The problem is there isn’t a lot of downloadable stuff that’s very good right now, and there are a LOT of good GBA games you couldn’t play. But on the other hand, they eventually WILL start making DSi-exclusive games. And not just ones that use the camera as a gimmick, but ones that will take advantage of the better RAM and CPU.
I’m in the same camp. It’s a combination of things:
A) Not liking to play games on tiny freakin’ little screens
B) The times I would play a handheld console are when I get some of my best reading done
C) Virtually any game made for a handheld would’ve been better if they’d just made it for a real console. DS games that actually make good use of the stylus are an exception to this, but are also a tiny minority.
