Sequel-The Broadway Musical!

Numerous movies have been made into musicals with various degrees of success, such as Mary Poppins and Xanadu, but has a movie sequel ever been redone for stage?

I think the answer might be “only if you count Young Frankenstein as a sequel” or if you count the fact that Evil Dead The Musical uses parts of all the Evil Dead films.

Unless something pops up soon, I’m just going to assume no.

I’ve been following Broadway for decades and never heard of one.

And I thought you could make a musical about anything. Apparently, I’ve found the one exception.

I’m sure the right people could. They just haven’t.

I’m still till waiting on “Oh Calcutta II - Electric Bugaloo”

There’s a big barrier to the sequel-turned-Broadway production. Time. Writing and creating a musical is very time consuming. Acquiring the rights(especially if a sequel may be in the works), getting a creative team together, acquiring the rights to the music(separate from the story/book), casting, staging, etc. So by the time this can happen, any sequels have already come out, and if they were hits, then they get their good bits stolen and put into the musical. We see this with Shrek, Star Wars, and the Lord of the Rings(highly debatable on how much of this was based on the films it seems) musicals. I’ve never seen a show turned into a musical within the window it takes to make a movie sequel, and if the movie sequel was a flop why make a musical of it?

Enjoy,
Steven
