My only concern, from the trailer, is it appears Joss caved and now there is sound in space. Hopefully this is just in the trailer. I thought it was cool that the tv show was one of the only ones I’ve seen who got that right.
Le sigh

The only thing missing from the trailer is blatant sex. I’m assuming the second trailer will feature a nekkid Kaylee, doing something erotic with a mango.
I…
I…
I’ll be in my bunk.
I hope it’s just the trailer, too, although when the movie was first announced I remember Whedon posting somewhere that he was going to try to preserve the feel of the show over any extraneous details that gave the suits heartburn – he specifically mentioned sound in space as one of them. Either way, I’m still gonna see the gorram thing twice on opening night.

Some interesting trivia at IMDb. I wonder how true it is.
I still recommend direct download. That way, when (not if) you want to re-watch it, you don’t need to download it again.
comments:
not enough Kaylee
I thought it was a “Blue Sun” flash at the end, but I single frame advanced it, and it is “FotoKem” (and a big “2”) http://www.fotokem.com/site_index.php (a video company)

… oh my goodness gracious.
This is gonna be a long, long summer. That is… wow.
speechless, watches it again
Ooh, ooh, ooh! I think I just peed myself a little!
“I don’t kill children.”
“I do.”
Gah!
I loves me some Jayne. “Let’s be bad guys.”
I just peed myself a little more.
I watched the full screen trailer on my Mac. Anyone know how to download & save that to my HD? Shouldn’t it already be on my HD somewhere?
Am I correct in assuming Kaylee isn’t in the movie? Bummer.
Kaylee and Book, the two people they don’t particularly show in the trailer, are both in the movie… Jewel Staite and Ron Glass are listed here , and it’s mentioned plenty of other places that they have the entire cast. No fear
Oh, thank God. I miss Book. And his hair. That’s still there… waiting.
Yeah, I remember it too: Joss said (way back when, anyway) that Universal wasn’t going to force him to add sound in space. Likewise I can understand why the marketing would shy away from that, lest they confuse the unwashed masses too unduly. But yeah, it was really, really weird to see our little Firefly roaring through the vacuum, wasn’t it?
Argh, I’m in ethics class and not getting back to the room for another hour and a half! Don’t they know it’s UNETHICAL to make me wait for this?!
YEEEEEEHAWWWW!
Shiiiiiiiiii-ny!
Jayne & Vera! “Let’s be bad guys.”
I like! Want more! NOW!
Don’t know if all of you heard this, but Joss Whedon’s said the trailer’s only going to be online for three hours, then they’re taking it down. I guess all you folks at work are just going to miss it.
Seriously, I think it looks very promising. Sure, it could end up really sucking, but I’ve got a lot of faith in Joss. I think he’ll be able to make a kick-ass movie and, just as important, keep it true to the original series.
157 days to go.
Very good trailer. Very good.
Want movie now.
I can’t tell you how glad I am this movie is coming out in September, when I’ll actually be able to go to a movie without feeling guilty about abandoning my daughter
Oh man is that looking sweet.
Not that I’m obsessive or anything, but I went through the trailer and put together a shot-by-shot description. I don’t think there’s anything in it that’s too spoiler-y, but just to be safe, I’m doing it in the next message instead of this one, so those who want to remain entirely pure can skip over it.
Okay, here it is, cut by cut. Dialogue is in blue. Onscreen text is in red. Unless otherwise noted, each paragraph is a separate shot.
Serenity roaring into atmo. Note: ass end first. Interesting.
Blue-lit Simon. Note: holding some sort of spiky implement, wearing a very fancy leather-collar outfit, and also a badge of some kind? Given what Joss has said about “providing the same backstory in a different way,” I hypothesized that we’d see how Simon got River out of the hospital, and I wonder if this shot is from that.
Zoe, with a Big Damn Gun, apparently moving stealthily toward something. Background is indistinct, but there’s a couple of weird white mannequin-y things behind her. And holy good gorram, but Gina Torres is gorgeous. Not that we didn’t know that already, but there you go.
Inara, closeup, looking concerned. No context.
River, closeup. No context.
Jayne, standing up, probably in the cargo bay. We don’t see what sort of t-shirt he’s wearing (I’m looking for Blue Sun logos).
The bridge of Serenity. From left, Zoe, Wash (piloting), Kaylee (behind, with an oh-shit expression), Mal (looking hard and determined), Inara, Simon (up front), and Jayne, with a great canary-yellow shirt, cradling a weapon and peering out from below his brow with “don’t fuck with me” all over his face.
Serenity approaching a planet, leaving some kind of wake in high atmo.
The bridge again. Same characters, different order, but same costumes, so probably the same scene.
Large fleet of vessels approaching an earthlike planet.
Serenity’s living/dining room. River at the end of the table, Kaylee just visible in the foreground corner, Mal in the background. Lighting in the shot is dark and moody, which makes it totally unlike every other “Firefly” shot we’ve seen.
Mal’s voiceover through all of the preceding: “Y’all got on this boat for different reasons. But y’all come to the same place. So now I’m askin’ more of you than I have before. Sure as I know anything, I know this…”
Heavy space artillery going rat-a-tat.
Serenity maneuvering above some sort of explosion, with other small vessels visible around it, and possibly the curve of a planet at the corner of the screen?
Cut to Mal: “I aim to misbehave.”
Blue hospital-y room, with what appears to be River in a chair of some kind, and Simon bringing a heavy spike thing down to break something (two shots), at which point there’s a splashing energy burst on the ceiling above the two of them. Fits with my supposition about showing Simon freeing River, or could be something else.
Bridge of Serenity, looking forward out the windows, with some sort of fire effect as the ship banks, apparently moving backward. Through an explosion? Entering atmo? Connected to the trailer’s opening shot?
Quick shot of space debris over a planet. Too brief to identify anything.
Studio logo. The “Universal” text swoops forward, while the planet stays still and morphs into a brownish dead-looking world. For the few frames it’s visible, the world’s landforms look very much like Earth’s continents. Also there’s a bright pinpoint of light at what looks to be New Orleans. Hmmm.
FROM THE MIND OF JOSS WHEDON
Quick shot of what looks like Shanghai via Blade Runner, complete with flying car. Lots and lots of Chinese signage.
Quick shot of Serenity flying over camera, looking up at the cargo area. Background is black.
Ocean view, some sort of angular base in the water with a column of smoke rising from it, an unidentifiable four-engine vessel swoops past camera down toward it.
CREATOR OF / BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER / AND ANGEL / COMES HIS UNIQUE VISION / OF THE FUTURE
Serenity swoops overhead again, this time with some of the California-looking scenery we know so well from the show serving as the background.
Soundtrack changes at this point from ominous tension-building soundtrack-y stuff to full-bore rock-and-roll.
Point-of-view shot, roaring down through cloud cover to a rocky moon-like landscape with some sort of communications-type dishes in the foreground and an installation on the mesa behind.
A PASSENGER WITH A PAST
River, lying on her side on a grate.
Mal, center screen, Zoe and Jayne behind him, saying to Simon, over whose shoulder we’re looking. Mal says: “I’m takin’ your sister under my protection here.”
Simon, listening to Mal.
More California landscape. A small vessel is being pursued by a larger one, which is belching black smoke. I’m guessing this is the “hovercraft chase” that was mentioned in one of the blogs a while back. Big ship behind: Reavers?
Closeup on the small vessel: Looks about the size of a bulldozer, with Zoe at the controls and Mal and Jayne in the back, firing at whatever’s chasing them. There’s someone in the passenger seat, also, but whoever it is can’t be identified.
Closeup on what Mal and Jayne are shooting at (apparently): big gray ship, some sort of narrow open port, and a guy with Tom Waits hair apparently launching some kind of nasty serrated disk before flinching away from the bullet striking sparks just below him.
Closeup on Mal, dodging the serrated disk.
River, sitting huddled in blue light.
Jayne, at the dinner table, again in the yellow shirt, agitated and saying: “The only people she’s a threat to is us on this boat.” Wash is in the background behind him.
Serenity, dropping fast away from some much larger vessel, and a planet in the background.
SIX REBELS ON THE RUN
Zoe, looking harried, with Simon immediately behind, rushing through a dark area.
Zoe and Simon moving down Serenity’s cargo ramp, preceded by Jayne with weapon (Vera?) raised, onto sandy ground. There’s a dead body in the sand a ways off.
River’s voice over the previous two shots: “It isn’t safe.”
Typical “Firefly” shantytown set, two ships in the blue sky, the one on the left with zip lines and commandos being lowered; then spiked boots slam into the immediate foreground, probably another of the commandos.
Big concrete-y set, with our heroes facing away from the camera: River in the foreground, Wash and Jayne farther off to the right, and probably Simon to the left; River whips around with a terrified expression.
Reverse angle, looking over River’s head as she turns, showing an empty courtyard.
River in closeup, blue light: “They’re coming.”
Repeat of same angle from before, Mal center screen, Zoe left, Jayne right, Simon in foreground facing away (camera over his shoulder), but a slightly different shot. Clearly in Serenity’s cargo bay.
Earthlike planet, with several large vessels leaving planet and approaching camera.
Rock-n-roll music cuts out here.
Mal, in profile, gun visible, background lit blue (Joss do love his blue lighting, don’t he?), saying, “I think we better go.”
Mal, in cargo bay, facing camera, then spinning around as some horrific creature leaps up behind him with a creepifyin’ screech and takes a swipe at him. In freezeframe, it looks like half the beast’s face is melted off, and it’s dressed in rags. Is this a Reaver? And if so, what’s it doing on Serenity?
Reverse angle from the above (apparently) of Mal spinning to the creature; River and Jayne are off in the background. River screams, while Jayne raises his weapon and Mal executes an amazingly impressive quickdraw; but we don’t see either fire.
AN EMPIRE IN PURSUIT
Closeup on River, holding onto what looks like a rope, but freezeframe; her windblown hair isn’t moving. Then another face melts through hers, like someone’s stepping through a hologram, and we get our first look at The Operative (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was the lead in “Dirty Pretty Things”).
Reverse angle, The Operative looking at the image of River, and he says: “Where are you hiding, little girl?”
River’s bare foot, stepping over what looks like a body onto a stone floor.
River’s face, closeup, staring through wild hair into a sharp, bright light.
Mal, in a dark room, candles off to one side: “Alliance wanted to reason, they shouldn’t have sent an assassin.”
Two shots of The Operative drawing a long blade from a sheath on his back. Looks like he’s on the upper level of Serenity’s cargo bay.
Sci-fi cityscape, silver organic-formed buildings amid rolling hills and greenery.
The Operative on a viewscreen: “Every minute you keep River Tam from me, more people will die.”
Serenity bridge, reverse angle as if looking at The Operative on screen. Wash piloting, Zoe behind him, Mal in foreground, Jayne standing in the doorway at back.
Flash cut of someone (The Operative?) slashing something past camera.
Two aerial shots of an apparently destroyed village. Snow on the ground, buildings with smoke pouring from them, a few flames visible. Several corpses lying in the snow. Big dark scar in the landscape as if a ship went down.
The Operative continuing his dialogue from before: “This is your fault.”
Another shot of the angular base in the water with smoke coming out of it, and snowflakes falling in the foreground.
Mal, center screen: “I don’t murder children.” He’s apparently somewhat the worse for wear, with a scrape on his cheek and blood on his ear and neck.
Quick flash, dark-haired girl with worried expression, as something dark rises in foreground.
Another quick flash, looks like The Operative swinging something (fist?) at Mal in a lushly appointed room.
The Operative on the viewscreen: “I do.”
Ringed planet and associated bodies, with Serenity (probably) flying past camera toward them.
Bridge (or “wheelhouse”) of Alliance-y vessel, looking forward past two uniformed men (facing away) through windows into space, apparently following a small ship ahead of them.
Closeup of geeky-looking guy (looking up actors, I see this character is named “Mr. Universe”) saying, “The Alliance has gone to enormous trouble to find your friend.” Out of focus in the background, a blonde woman is lounging in bed.
Two shots of River hiding: legs split and feet planted on opposite walls, one hand clutching a sprinkler or something, so her whole body is flat against the ceiling. Cool.
Two shots of River dropping a cloak, pushing it off her shoulders and letting it fall to the floor, as Mr. Universe continues over: “Do you all know what it is you’re carrying?”
Matrix-y techno music starts here.
River, walking calmly through what looks like a bar. One guy starts to stand up in front of her.
New angle, same scene: she sweep-kicks him across the face, then continues her spin and roundhouse kicks another guy’s head; this guy, falling, interferes with a third guy who’s trying to come in, who River snap-kicks in the face.
Mal, casually pushing aside a fan, a hilariously perplexed look on his face, as if wondering who’s doing all the ass-kicking. Jayne is behind him, oblivious.
Two guys we haven’t seen before (who look like twins, actually). One says in a British accent: “Do you know that girl?”
River takes out another guy: looks like he’s holding on to her, and she twists his arm to force his torso down, then puts her knee against his nose. Then she slides past an incoming punch and grabs the next guy’s arm.
Mal, in what looks like the same candle-y room from before, with a small Buddha at right and Inara at left. Mal says: “She is a mite unpredictable.”
River, holding one guy’s arm, kicks him in the stomach, then spins under his arm and takes out another oncoming attacker.
Back to Mal and Inara, with Mal saying: “Mood swings, of a sort.”
River, side-kicking two guys off a platform in the bar.
Mal, Jayne, and the two twins watching the mayhem. The twins are amazed; Jayne’s expression says “whoa,” and Mal has on his “…huh” face.
Matrix-y music stops here.
The Operative, saying: “It’s worse than you know.”
Mal and Inara continuing in the same shot from before. Mal: “It usually is.”
THIS FALL
Two shots, a large fleet of ships approaching camera, with Serenity at center; then in the next angle heading toward a planet and another large group of ships.
Zoe’s voice over the above: “It’s a fair bet the Alliance knows what’s coming.”
Mal, extreme closeup: “No.”
River, extreme closeup, looking up at her through a grate (probably the one we saw her lying on earlier) as she opens her eyes.
Back to Mal’s closeup, finishing his line: “They’re not gonna see this comin’.”
Jayne in sunglasses, in a low-angle power shot against a bright blue sky, unzipping his jacket to reveal a large firearm, grinning as he says: “Let’s be bad guys.”
River leaping through a small head-high opening, diving to the floor and somersaulting up into a wicked midsection punch against someone we can’t see. Costume suggests it’s The Operative but we don’t see his face.
Big Alliance-y ships, missile flying across, huge explosion. Planet in background.
THE CULT PHENOMENON HAILED BY CRITICS
Looking down at a huge spinning turbine-type thing, and someone falling or jumping down onto its framework.
Closeup of whoever’s landing (Mal? hard to say).

Serenity, twisting and spinning in hard maneuvers toward camera, with a big Alliance-y ship behind and what appears to be a missile in pursuit of the Firefly, plus other ships around.
Zoe, closeup: “We’re not alone.”
Crash zoom on another vessel, silhouetted against sky and sun.
Mal, low-angle power shot: “Well, no more running.” He’s in Serenity’s dining room (Kaylee’s painted flowers are visible on the yellow wall), backlit by sunshine from the overhead windows.
Quick shot of someone slamming a lever forward as though shifting a vehicle. From the legs at the top of the screen, I’m guessing this is Zoe driving the small craft from earlier, and River’s in the passenger seat.
AND LOVED BY MILLIONS OF FANS WORLDWIDE
Four quick shots of the same action: blonde guy (not Wash) running toward camera, Jayne clotheslining him and inverting him, then holding his legs, pile-driving his head to the floor. Go Jayne.
BECOMES A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE EVENT
Two shots, Serenity flying through an obviously huge and elaborate space battle, with lots of ships, missiles, explosions, and other chaos.
Wash’s voice over the above: “This is gonna get pretty interesting.”
Serenity bridge, same action, looking forward as they bank through the mayhem.
Mal’s voice: “Define interesting.”
Two shots, River in hand-to-hand combat with someone, and it looks like she’s wielding a blade.
Quick shot, something in space blowing up.
Serenity bridge, Wash in the pilot seat, Mal behind him. Wash, answering Mal’s question: “Oh God, oh God, we’re all gonna die?”
River side-kicks someone in the head. Background is on Serenity. Oddly, the profile of the guy she’s kicking greatly resembles Simon. Hmm.
Handheld shot of Serenity’s engine room (Kaylee’s hammock visible at left) with raging flames in the background! and two indistinct figures staggering away from the fire.
Another shot of the space battle.
Another shot of the hovercraft chase.
Serenity bridge: Wash in the pilot’s chair, Mal in the other seat, Zoe behind, all wincing as something blows sparks from the ceiling.
Super-low power shot of Mal raising a weapon.
Quick glimpse of Serenity against black.
Then the title and logo swirls brightly into place.
The Operative, calmly: “I want to resolve this like civilized men. I’m not threatening you, I’m unarmed—”
Mal, intense in closeup, with Inara behind: “Good.”
Wider shot of the same as he quick-draws and fires.
>YOU CAN’T STOP THE SIGNAL
Credits.
I think I need to go change my underpants.
Pretty good trailer overall, thinks I. I can see it attracting punters who don’t know the series.
A few random notes:
Trailer appears to emphasize the higher-tech aspects of the film’s future world, rather than the frontier atmosphere that supposedly turned off some of the potential viewers of the series.
The effects clearly show the filmmakers have adjusted for the richer image possibilities of the big screen. Good. The production design, particularly costuming, does look somewhat different from the series, but not in a bad way.
No sign of Book that I could see; Kaylee’s only appearance in the trailer appears to be two group shots on Serenity’s bridge .
Glad at least there there will be plenty of the snappy patter that was one of my favorite things about the series.
Gonna be a long wait till Sept. 30th
