Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I never watched this show – never even heard of it – but my sister was watching it this morning on some rando station called DECADES. It was Sly Like a Fox with Jack Warden. She only wanted to see Jane Kaczmarek when she was that young (the episode was from 1984). Man, did this show stink.

On imdb the featured reviewer was rhapsodizing about how wonderful this show had been. I think it must be false memory syndrome, because every aspect of this show (even the music) was drek.

Feb 8 is the release date i found.

Finished the first four eps of 1923. I had to go on the internet to figure out what the relationships are to the people in 1883. Harrison Ford is really looking his age. Don’t know what possessed him to go bouncing around on a horse. Happy to see that what I thought were anachronisms for that period were, in fact, in use at that time, although how a sheep farmer could afford a Thompson submachine gun back then is a mystery. Good job on the research.

I saw the commercial for this show and thought that the female lead sounded like Eva Longoria but it’s not. (It’s Gina Rodriguez.)

Where did you find the old Hitchcock?

Well, I wouldn’t have known this, but apparently the US postal service was the first law enforcement agency to acquire Thompsons to deal with mail train robberies, so I guess they were around.

Sure, but in today’s money it would have cost about $3,000.

Retail, I suppose, but if they were popping up in a lot of places…

I’m going to try this one!

I only got the first two episodes of 1923. Fords character tortured and murdered four sheepherders, but one got away. So did he get a Tommygun and seek revenge? Why wasn’t Fords character arrested and hanged?

No, one of the sheepherders escaped and then ambushed Dutton, killing his brother and seriously wounding Dutton. They weren’t arrested because they and the law are all in cahoots and the Duttons have the largest ranch in the area and a lot of influence.

Season 3 of Happy Valley started streaming this month on BBC iPlayer.

It’s centered on a middle-aged female police officer in the north of England. What makes it engaging is that the dialogue, the personal crises, and the interpersonal dynamics often seem strikingly true-to-life.

The show’s creator, Sally Wainwright, built her reputation on bringing authentic characters and situations to the small screen, in shows such as Last Tango in Halifax and Scott & Bailey.*

(*…the show that @Chefguy kicked this thread off with, some 2075 posts ago…)

When I saw that name I thought she was the Scott & Bailey person. Loved that show. And, yes, the police stuff was good, but the personal side of things rang so true that it made it must-see for me. I’ll have to check out Happy Valley.

I cannot wait for this to be released in the US- by far my favorite UK police series of all time.

Oh yeah, I had to be persuaded to watch Grantchester, because I couldn’t picture James Norton as a good guy. after his turn on Happy Valley.

Binged Extraordinary over the last couple of days. Very enjoyable.

CB STRIKE on the tube, loving it.

Your Honor on Showtime. I signed up for the service for the Michelle Yeoh movie, but the wife hated it, so we started this series. Stars Bryan Cranston as a judge who covers up his kid’s crime. Grabs you right from the get-go, although Cranston seems to have signed on for another sort of Breaking Bad role. We’re only in ep 3, so we’ll see where it goes.

We’ve been watching The Servant, which I’m betting has already been covered. It’s enjoyable if you like creepy what-the-hell is going on type shows.

Watched first episode of Letterkenny tonight. Freaking funny! Set in a small town in Ontario, it’s like a cross between Trailer Park Boys and Gilmore Girls. Definitely a lot of crude guy humour, but also witty strangely.
