Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I’m balls deep in season 1 of Shoresey (Hulu). I have no idea if this is true, but it seems like Letterkenny was what Keeso had to do to make the show he really wanted to make which was this. It’s not as funny as Letterkenny but it also doesn’t depend so much on gimmicks and bits. I could not possibly care less about Hockey but the chirping is hilarious and I try to remember them for later.

Solid show so far, fans of Letterkenny should definitely check it out but also watch an episode even if you didn’t like Letterkenny.

A friend of mine introduced me to Letterkenny the other day…it’s a ball! Good enough that I can sit through the toilet humour waiting for the good bits. Wayne and Shuster it ain’t!

The first couple of seasons are great, but it does get stale. What season it jumps the shark for you will be different, but when it does check out Shoresy. It’s even better.

Finished Waco last night, which was more sympathetic to the Davidians than they probably deserved, but overall it stuck to the facts of the standoff. What a clusterfuck.

I recently discovered Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries. I’ve only seen the first three episodes, but like it so far. It has a great '60s vibe, somewhere between The Avengers and Moonlighting. I can’t say that the mysteries are really great, yet, but the lead character is beyond adorable.

Do not use this show for a drinking game, however. If you take a sip every time Peregrine hides behind something and overhears a vital clue, it could be fatal.

Did you know this is a sequel to Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries? I like both series. Mainly, because they had such a strong emphasis on historical accuracy. I’m old enough to remember 60s hair styles and fashions, and I have a pretty decent knowledge of 20s hair styles and fashions, and both of these series absolutely nail it.

Yes, the mysteries are not the greatest, but it’s the characters and their interactions that are the draw. The original Miss Fisher stories were based on a series of books, but they changed the character of the police detective from a devoted family man to a divorced potential love interest for Phrynne (Miss Fisher). The chemistry really worked.

Lots of fun.

I did know it was a sequel. I haven’t seen any episodes of the original, but may check it out when I’m done with this one.

The show may get the hairstyles and fashions correct (and Peregrine has a great car), but the main characters all have extremely modern sensibilities. Not that that’s a bad thing, but along with the gadgets, it gives the show a slightly fantastical feel to me.

That’s true. But if the main characters had historically accurate attitudes, we’d probably hate them.

In Miss Fisher, she has a secretary/companion who’s quite reserved and conservative to help balance out the more out-there Miss Fisher.

The Head of Joaquin Murrieta (La cabeza de Joaquín Murrieta) on Amazon Prime. 3 episodes in and I’m really digging it. Californios, Mexicans, Indians, Chinese, and cartoonishly evil Americans. And every character is on a mission of vengeance. It’s like a mashup of Zorro and a Spaghetti Western.

Not sure how well this fits in, but it is a series, so I’ll put forward The Top Ten Revealed on AXS TV. I tape every episode. They really take me back.

`1899.

Eight hours I’ll never get back.

Before getting sidetracked by basketball I watched the first episode of The Last Man with Diane Lane. It was a spooky enough proposition and seemed to be decently produced and acted so I think I’ll see where it goes for a while longer.

I’m watching S2 of Clarkson’s Farm. It’s a reality-type show with Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame. He bought a farm and attempts to run it. There are some funny locals and of course all sorts of things go awry. I love it!

On what platform are you watching this?

I watch it on the Sundance channel late on Friday nights. It’s streaming on Acorn, as well, but I haven’t tried that.

Thanks!

We watched the pilot episode of Lucky Hank; Bob Odenkirk stars as the head of the English department in a “mediocre” (his words) liberal arts college. Off to a good start; lots of snarky humor about college office politics (similar in that regard to the Sandra Oh series, The Chair). We plan to stay with it.

We caught up on Alaska Daily last night. It’s not great, but the occasional shots of Anchorage are nice. It was actually filmed almost entirely in Canada and has few Alaska Native actors.

The Consultant (Prime, 2023) I am 4 episodes in to this 8 part series of season 1. The CEO of a tech game company dies under unusual circumstances and a strange unknown person arrives to take charge.

The show is fantastic. Everything nice you’ve read about this show is true.

I would only like to add the lead guy reminds me of Dr. Henry Killinger from The Venture Bros.

That is all.

Could not sleep to save my life last night, so I turned on the TV. Watched Star Trek Next Generation (I think). First episode I’ve ever seen. “The Naked Now”. I will assure you, it will be the last and only episode of this I will ever watch.

It was a rip-off rehash of an original series episode. This was very bad. Like it was written by a 13-year old boy. It was embarrassing. Didn’t even help me fall asleep. Completely useless.
