Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I’m currently watching the 1974 BBC series Fall of Eagles. I’m on Episode Eight “The Appointment”, of thirteen episodes. Great series!

Except I think the show has always been about how Ted changed those around him. I think that was demonstrated in particular in the Christmas episode.

I’ve watched the kid’s series Secrets Of Sulphur Springs on Disney+ each year a new season comes out. It’s about tweens who discover a time portal in their basement, and it’s actually pretty good. Kid acting is always a crapshoot, but they do a reasonably admirable job, and though their ‘acting’ skills have improved year-upon-year, their ‘reacting’ skills still need a bit of work.

Also, it’s all set over a period of a few weeks, but the kids are all now three years older and two feet taller. Season 2 had only one kid clearly taller than the rest, and this season all three main kids are the same height again.

Anyway, it’s a decent show, and worth a watch with your kids.

Yeah, it is hilarious. I’ve thought about screencapping the kids from all three seasons, but never got around to it.

Started: Poker Face. Love love love Natasha Lyonne in general, and thus far the show is pretty entertaining, although the unannounced time slips are annoying as you have to realize that the current scene takes place earlier than the previous one with no notice of this. The Columbo-type credits are a nice touch.

Still watching: Hotel Del Luna. Still enjoying it, although there is a massive amount of “characters staring speechlessly at one another for ages while a romantic Korean song plays”. The backstory twists are what are keeping this from being complete pablum; all the women are whiny af (except for the Mago sisters who are always good value) and the men ineffectual doofuses. Definitely light entertainment despite all the dead people.

Finished: The Marvellous Mrs Maisel. All wrapped up very enjoyably, despite requiring the usual suspension of disbelief for the alt-history elements of it. Lots of laughs, and Susie Myerson will remain one of the greatest television characters of all time IMHO.

I just finished S1 and now I’m hooked enough that I will watch the rest. (It’s only four seasons and just wrapped up, so I know what I’m getting into.) Now I just need to wait for my wife to decide if she wants to watch it, which would mean rewatching S1 with her before watching the rest together.

I watched Arnold Schwarzenegger in “FUBAR” this week, and I really enjoyed it. The basic flavor is action/humor and human relationships, and Arnold is good at that. His costar who played his daughter was also excellent. I recommend it.

Jack Ryan season 2 on Prime

Pretty good. Ryan is different from season 1. He was an analyst that outwitted the terrorist. S2 he’s more active and does field investigations.

I recommend both seasons. I’ll start S3 in a week or so.

FUBAR (Netflix, 2023) - Essentially True Lies 2.0 which should have been fine, but after one episode I had had enough. My wife will keep watching it I suspect. It’s wonderful it didn’t take itself seriously, there is a solid supporting cast of funny people and I think there is a market for this type of show. I also think that market was in the 90’s where Schwarzenegger’s career should have ended.

It was just so obvious with no nostalgia to cling too.

Finished Barry , great
We binged Inside Man in a evening, the show not the movie. It had quite a few wildly implausible moments over the general level of implausible moments, but it was fun. Stanley Tucci held it together and makes most things better, I guess they were thinking of making an ongoing series out of it?

Managed to persuade Mrs we should watch The Expanse , she is not a big sci fi fan but liked Andor. The first episodes were well received so we will keep going.

Need to sort out a month of Apple TV to go watch the last season of Ted Lasso, we have avoided spoilers and reviews so we will see.

Best show on TV in the last ten years, IMO. I’m a sci-fi geek though, especially political/military sci-fi, but wow do you have so much cool stuff in store. The books aren’t bad, either.

We also watchedvthe finale’ of Barry, and thoughtbit ended very satisfactorally. Still not sure what was going on with the surreal house in the desert, but all in all a great series.

White House Plumbers also finished last weekend (all my shows are over!!!), and I’m glad I watched to the end. Once I was used to the tone (and Harrelson’s weird characterization) I enjoyed it quite a bit. Lots of minor characters with wonderful little bits. Enough wry humor to balance out the Nixonian ickiness.

Agree this is my 3 rd watch, 1st was on my own , 2nd was with my daughter (who is at collage working through the summer and decided to watch through her second time ) and now converted Mrs mollusc, so doing what I can to keep the viewing numbers up in hope they resurrect it one day.

Over already? I’m only two episodes in because my wife (from Ireland) finds the whole thing ridiculous and quit. I can’t convince her it’s more History than satire. I’m looking foreword to finishing it,

Yeah, they were pretty tightly focused on the Plumbers and their story. A nice long series on the entire Watergate enchilada would be nice someday.

There’s All The President’s Men from 1976 (a movie, of course).

Yes, and I love that movie. But it would be nice to really dig into the detail, and the minor characters.

In The White Plumbers, for example, Mark Felt was shown very briefly and mentioned at least one other time. All the President’s Men obviously didn’t mention him at all.

That would be because at the time ATPM was filmed, no one knew who Deep Throat was. Mark Felt only came out as Deep Throat a few years ago.

FUBAR was HORRIBLE. Dumped 1/2 way thru the second episode. Poor Arnie.
