Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Just binged the first season of The Recruit on Netflix. Drama with some laughs. A newly graduated lawyer gets a job with the CIA where he is more spy than lawyer. Looking forward to season 2.

(One year later) and this is back.

I just finished watching the Korean series “Mask Girl” on Netflix. The title character is a meek, plain woman who works in an office by day but who puts on a mask and becomes a hugely popular internet idol at night. Then one of her coworkers who has a crush on Mask Girl discovers her identity. Events rapidly spiral out of control into a very violent series.

We just blitzed about 5 episodes of ‘ Bodies’ last night.
A british series on Netflix 4 different time periods all about a police person dealing with a mysterious naked body that turns up in the same place in each time period.
Mysterious shadowy forces, dystopian future and all that. Well acted and engaging plot so far.
Will watch the rest tonight, hopefully the story ending will hold up to quality of the episodes we have watched.

It was cold and rainy yesterday so I binged Fall of the House of Usher. Really enjoyed it.

My wife and I have been watching Shetland on Britbox. It’s a murder mystery series set in the Shetland Islands. The first two seasons consist of adaptations of the novels by Ann Cleeves (two episodes per novel). S3 was a single arc spanning six episodes, and S4 (which we started last night) appears to be the same.

Turning on the closed captioning helps a lot with the thick Scottish accents.

Just finished binging “manifest” on Netflix. That was a lot of woo, but they did indeed land the plane.

Shetland is excellent. Wish we could watch it again for the first time.

If you like Scottish detectives, give Case Histories a try on Prime. Starring Jason Isaacs as Jackson Brodie, and based on the excellent novels by Kate Atkinson.

It is a great series, Very atmospheric.

I really miss watching Shetland - I loved it. But it was too good, too into-my-head; I had to stop after the story line where

one was raped

I had invasive dreams after that episode, about my wife.

Finished up Bodies ( it is on Netflix)
It was good, some of the usual time travel paradox questions dealt with as best they can, and a satisfying close. I’d give it a recommended thumbs up.

Hopefully no one has any bright ideas about ‘ hey let’s do a season 2 ‘

We are a couple of episodes into it and are finding Future Detective’s incredible fringe (or is it a mullet??) rather distracting!

The ongoing survey of reincarnation anime continues with the ridiculously-named That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime. Weirdly this has turned out to be my favorite of the bunch, with quite a likable protagonist and cast of characters and a lot of tongue-in-cheek goofiness. The main character is unequivocally OP and there’s never any doubt he* will prevail, but surprisingly a lot of the solutions to problems are more nuanced and well-considered than just “blast them with my infinite power”. There is a surprising amount of discussion of politics, economics, spying and intrigue, and military strategy (within the fantasy setting, of course), which drive the longer plot arcs. There are also a few standard anime comedy episodes, which brings us to…

Perv rating: For once there is no underaged perving AT ALL. There are a few episodes based around the ogling of breasts and other body parts, quite obviously put in for fanservice and including a random tentacle monster (who doesn’t actually do anything naughty), but as an added bonus the ogling is equal opportunity and there is a selection of scantily-clad male characters as well to enjoy if you’re into that sort of thing. And no gratuitous groping. That said, probably best to skip the first two episodes of S3 as they are entirely plot-free and ogle-heavy.

*The main character is Japanese man who gets killed in a random knife attack and is reincarnated as an amorphous blob. He later develops a human form based on mimicking a female character, but the chosen form is androgynous and sexless. Rimuru’s chosen pronouns are he/him.

I’m getting through The Dectorists on Netflix, a BBC series they’re showing, charming and because it’s a British show very easy to binge.

Yay, back to sailing under a skull and crossbones for me!

I’ve been doing that with offers on Prime channels, but I’m sure I’ve gone through most of them by now. Currently on a Disney trial and I’m reasonably disappointed with the vast choice with little I want to see.

Slimes are a big thing in Japan at the moment.

The protagonist greets a couple of characters with “I’m not a bad slime!”, which is how he finds at least one person who had also previously lived in Japan.

i came across “kim’s convenience” on netflix. really enjoying it. fun show about a family and their convenience store. it is a canadian show set in toronto.

My wife and I began this last night. We anticipate a Poe Anthology told in episode vignettes describing The Usher brood. I love the idea and at least the first episode was a good start so we’re plugging on tonight.

Just finished watching season 3, and re-watching season 3. Our general opinion was that season 3 was pure fan service, bringing back every possible character they could.

The three seasons together irritate me because of their complete disregard for continuity:

  • Whatever happened to Picard’s brother and nephew, that left Jean-Luc seemingly the vineyard’s sole occupant?
  • The various series (STNG, Voyager) each managed to permanently destroy the Borg, but they keep showing up again, as dangerous as ever (something I’ve also observed with Doctor Who and Daleks). If you’re going to have such a perfect enemy, don’t destroy them permanently, just send them off somewhere where they won’t be a problem for a while.
  • It’s made clear that Q is dying / moving on to something else at the end of season 2…but there he is at the end of season 3.
  • In general, killing someone off doesn’t seem to be a permanent solution (looking at YOU, Data!)
