Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Me! I loved this show and hooked my brother when he was visiting from Costa Rica (he had to binge pretty hard the last couple of days he was in town to finish). I liked all the seasons, even when some of the characters changed. I loved the evolution of the Fatim and Eddy characters. The Lise character has a few “evolutions” herself. I think that actress (Pauline Cheviller) does a wonderful job.

I read that Tomer Sisley (Balthazar) was the first foreign born comedian to win a stand up competition in Toronto a while back. It shows in his performance.

I really liked Billions, though it was better in the earlier seasons, when it was Bobby Axelrod vs Chuck Rhoades, especially the differences between them in terms of class and wealth. The ending was okay, though they seemed to gloss over the fact that Axe was facing criminal charges in the US and should not have been able to walk around freely.

BTW, did you hear that Showtime/Paramount+ plan to turn the show into a franchise with variations set in different cities? One is supposed to be Miami, which might be why Wags mentioned that he may be moving there.

Look - you can have a “happy” ending or you can have a realistic one, and given that little in the series was realistic be glad they managed a happy one.

Finished All The Light We Cannot See. A reasonably engaging WWII story but man, Mark Ruffalo cannot do an English accent (which he needed to play a Frenchman for some reason, presumably because his character’s uncle was played by Hugh Laurie). Lots of generic bad Nazis (including one pointedly polished the skull on his hat without asking “Are we the baddies?”). Worth a watch if you like war stories, I suppose.

Started: Futurama S11. Like Archer, they really should have stopped at 10 with the tidy endings they had. Also like Archer, thus far it’s just a rehash of all the old jokes we’ve already seen plus some topical stuff that is already aging very badly (I’m looking at you, COVID episode). It’s a struggle to keep watching, so who knows when and if I’ll finish the season.

Also watching: Welcome to Wrexham (S2), Loki (S2), Jobless Reincarnation (S2).

Lately I’ve been watching Todd and the Book of Pure Evil. Which makes me want to rewatch Stan Against Evil.

Oh, we loved Stan Against Evil! I’d forgotten about it.

Todd is similar in tone, if a bit more juvenile.

I remember liking the first seasons of “Todd” and “Stan” more than the second seasons (especially the second season of “Stan”). I would also add the show Blood Drive to the list of monster-of-the-week horror parodies (although it was somewhat hit-and-miss).

I really liked it, although I thought it was just a bit longer than necessary in the middle. I understand that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

If you get as far as the credits, there are photographs of some of the actual historical things from the show. Very cool.

We finished S5 of Shetland the other night, and it just didn’t seem to be as tightly written as the two previous seasons. In particular I had problems with how easily Olivia (the mother) got around the island even though she had no car or money. Hitchhiking?

Just binged The Shadow Line on Amazon Prime via FreeVee. It is a BBC series, one season of 8 episodes. Very cool police/drug dealer drama with a ton of confusing twists and turns. Recommend highly.

Rather late to the party, but just finished s1 of Broadchurch. Heavy subject matter, dealing with the murder of a young boy, but very well made and some good performances, even if some of the Dorset accents are a bit hit and miss. I guessed the guilty party half way through, not through any great detective work on my part but rather down to a character being fairly bland and ‘in the background’ but important to one of the main characters, which set off alarm bells with me as I’ve seen characters like this before in murder mysteries be the ones who dunnit.

Have now moved onto s2 and still enjoying it.

I watched Broadchurch when it first appeared on PBS, and enjoyed it immensely at the time, especially getting the feel of daily life in a small British coastal town. At the time I thought to myself that the actress playing the mother will have a future in the business, holding her own against Olivia Colman and my favorite Doctor Who.

Thinking that my wife would like it too, since she’s a fan of Dateline and the such, we watched the first two episodes last night. She did like it! It helped to have subtitles on, that’s for sure.

I saw the second season as well, and didn’t enjoy it nearly as much. It was fine where it ended in season one.

We got through season one and two of lupin, and enjoyed it. Gave up on season 3 pretty quickly though. As mentioned up thread, really overly contrived and once the main plot of S1s2 was resolved, it seemed to lack a compelling story for us. Nothing wrong with it and it has the crime caper thing on the go , just didn’t hold us any longer.

We are enjoying s2 of Broadchurch but it does seem right on the edge of being melodramatic to be honest, a bit like they are milking the story too much. The first felt a lot more gritty. I am British so the accents are fine. Funnily enough, on the Movie thread, Cary Grant’s Bristolian origins have been discussed, I say funnily enough because his authentic accent would have been similar (to my untrained ear) to the ones in this.

I think the only series I’ve watched where I’ve struggled a bit with understanding string accents was The Wire, took a while to adjust to some of those but soon picked it up.

I’m sure we’ll finish it. I think we’re halfway through it. (The English)

We’ve been watching Bosch - just started the second season. We REALLY like it.

You mean story about a Nazi search team that cannot find a blind girl who takes to wandering her football field sized village in between her pirate radio broadcasts of literary snippets that are really Free French Resistance information transmissions but all with absolutely no other Resistance support or direction.

I could tolerate one episode of this abuse of reason.

Not everything is explained in the first episode (nor should it have to).

I think some of the earlier seasons from the original programme were better, with the political/politicking aspects, but it is always very watchable. My partner watched a couple of the original series and didn’t like it because, quote, “he’s a miserable sod”.

I enjoyed the whole series, but I do think Season 1 was the best.

Finished “Shrinking” on AppleTV. Definitely recommended. Has a lot of laugh out loud moments including one of my favorites when Harrison Ford says “Don’t raw dog me…”

The episodes are short and easily watchable.
